I have yet to try out Majora's Mask, the only Zelda game that looks interesting. Ocarina of Time never took off, and I didn't like the world, so I didn't bother.

Love Crash Bandicoot, though. No nonsense platformer with great visuals and audio.

Same, when I tried crash 1 it seemed kinda just ok to me. I was on level 16 I believe before I dropped it. Would you guys recommend trying crash 2?

It depends, Crash 1 is flawed in some ways, and the later games feature more control over the character. What made you drop it?

>Most straightforward game in existence

The only reason I can imagine someone not being able to "Get into" Crash is simply getting stuck on a hard level/being bad at the game.

Don't get me wrong, you can dislike the game if you want, but "get into" is kind of just associated with, well, the game being hard to get into. RPGs and Grand strategy for example.

Definitely Final Fantasy for me. I just could not EVER understand the appeal of that incredibly boring turn-based party combat. There's no skill involved what-so-ever, and no excitement either. Yet so many people who i talk to, praise it like it's the grail of video games. I think it's more boring than a black&white movie without sound.

Design just felt very basic, decent challenge but just didn't feel that fun. Reminded me of donkey kong country actually, another game I feel pretty lukewarm on. Visually I enjoyed the art and music of both.

>Reminded me of donkey kong country actually

It was the main inspiration, later games don't stray from that formula, but as I said Crash is way more fun to control due to the added moves and combos (just a bunch of stunts, but they really help). They also removed the slight input lag of the first game.

Design for Crash 2 is more omogeneous than Crash 1 I think, for that you might want to get into Crash 3 which mixes the various settings with new (arguably gimmicky) gameplay modes which most of are not platforming related. There's also a pretty cool time attack mode in 3. I like 2 the best though for some reason, maybe it has to do with the SMW-tier secrets and stunts.

Trying my best to not sound like a Crash shill. Crash 2 learned a lot from the previous game, like >>3129663 said it removed this weird permanent input lag so platforming actually feels raw this time around.

It's weird saying this but the way Crash 2 was designed and tuned, it should've been the first Crash game. It feels refined and the pacing is a lot better. It rehashes some of the basic Crash 1 environments in the first warp room so it doesn't feel like you're missing that much. Crash 2 starts off very easy for you to warm into and then the challenging stuff kicks in in warp room 2 to 3.

Finish that then move on to Crash 3 where they layer on additional gimmicks and themes (wizards, persian stuff, cyberpunk, coral reefs, egyptian tombs, etc.). After you've beaten Crash 2 and 3, then you can play Crash 1 where it's just maximum platforming challenge, and by now you should be good enough to out-play the input lag.

If you still genuinely don't like Crash, which is fine, give CTR a try and see if you like that.

For me, it was the first Spyro. Really didn't like the themes, the music, the controls, anything really. Felt like a beta to something that should have been better. It had all the right elements, but didn't exactly excel in any of them. I have tried later games and was moderately entertained, but not enough to ever try the series again.

>>3129897
I loved the hell out of this game the first time I played it, fucking great. Second time around, I got to the Lab and stopped after that fight, tried a third time and same thing, haven't tried it again since. It really was a wonderful game, but I think a lot of the value for me was the design and it obviously isn't getting any newer as I try it again. I think I got so spoiled the first time by how great I thought it was that I can't replay it without being a little let down. I'd still give it a good 8/10.

>>3129989
Thanks, I've heard crash 2 is commonly thought of as the best of the series so I plan to give it a try. Bringing up actual arguments why you like a game doesn't make you a shill, ignoring and denying without proof an argument against something does.

Crash felt like a "me-too" animal mascot platformer in an already oversaturated market with level design that didn't suggest any creativity or ingenuity. I played it for 10 minutes on demo units and stopped when I realized I wasn't having any fun and was wasting my time.

Pokemon, the combination of still having only a NES and PC when it was new and parents getting caught in the IS IT THE TOOL OF SATAN??? religious scare surrounding it meant I missed out entirely on it, by the time both of those factors changed I was just too old to be interested anymore

Quake 3, when I first tried it I was too used to Doom DM which I was still playing then thanks to MP-focused source ports, I didn't know about bhopping then so movement in Q3 felt frustratingly slow coming from Doom and after I learned some basic movement tricks the game still just didn't grab me

Playing Smokin' Guns is the only time I've really enjoyed something that came out of Q3, it's a shame that it's a broken mess on modern Windows systems and development appears to have slowed to a crawl so it may never get fixed

Final Fantasy IX.

Didn't like it when I played it in high school, still don't today. I understand it's charm and why people enjoy it but it just never stuck with me. Same story with X. The only two games in the series I've only finished once and said "yeah that's enough".

I've found that people who really really love this game and call it the holy grail have never played a Dragon Quest game. Thankfully a lot of /vr/ has and I've seen you guys discuss this game like rational humans, lol.

I don't necessarily blame them, but CT has so much of the same charm and style going for it (I mean literally Akira Toriyama + Yuji Horii as scenario writer). But they're just unaware of where a lot of it comes from.

You might have seen a lot of debate over Crash 2 vs Crash 3 and you have no clue who to believe. Most of them will just be subjective opinions and personal experiences. But to put it into an objective sense, Crash 2 is the sequel that focuses on refining Crash 1 (and does it really well) and Crash 3 is about giving fans more of it and expanding sideways. It might seem like Crash 3 is immediately the best answer, but the "more" part takes form of a tour through many world themes, a new item type to earn (time attack stuff), wacky Crash abilities, wacky vehicles/mounts, wacky level gimmicks. Some fans like this aspect, while some other fans think Crash 2 is a more genuine sequel and deserve the honor of being the best game. Have fun bro.

>> No.3130693

>>3130676

The problem is that Crash 3 didn't expand anything platforming related, other than having slower air acceleration, which just made Crash less responsive in mid-air.

Instead, the "expansion" dilutes the platforming experience with nonsense vehicle levels.
