Does this count as /vr/?

I'm a bit overwhelmed by the amount of freedom and fiddly bits. Any tips for a newbie? How easy is it to completely fuck yourself over?

I'm playing 1.12, since 1.13 adds even more options and items and complexities.

>I'm a bit overwhelmed by the amount of freedom and fiddly bits. Any tips for a newbie?
-it's better to train up shit mercs (they only increase in price slightly as they get more skilled) than to pay for the best.
-having said that you may want to pick your initial mercs just for their gear alone as good stuff won't be available for a long time, same with ammo.
-from what I remember of 1.12 you'll probably be shooting .38 det. specials at enemies until you take drassen as that's all you usually recover from early enemies. If you're quick enough you could probably take it with your starting equipment.
-it might seem really impossible to pay everyone starting out but once you've got a source of income it shouldn't be a problem.
-don't carry too much, you'll loose vital ap and need to rest more on the overmap.
-shoot laying down and move running full sprint whenever possible.
-use aimed shot whenever possible especially at the start. Remember to reload aswell.
Spread your mercs out to avoid grenadiers taking out everyone in one turn but don't have anyone running ahead of the rest. Plan out how you're going to deal with everyone and sit your mercs in ideal positions before the shit hits.
-save before you do weird manoeuvres (getting on a roof etc) in case you or the interface fucks up
-theres like 2 free mercs you can pick up from the start of the game. One is a medic girl that you get easily, there's also a secret one I think, look it up.
-always train up the militia in towns you've taken over
-don't attack at night
>How easy is it to completely fuck yourself over?
Pretty easily. Save often. Once you have Drassen and the mine it should be alot easier for awhile. Especially without the 'can't wake up' counter attack in 1.13
-buy lots of medic bags and first aid kits - not doing this is the easiest way to totally fuck up imo.

- Full disclosure i've never finished the game but i've played about half way lots of time.

>Drassen Counterattack.
Oh god, how unfair can something get? A team of six scrubs with two MP5s, a busted-ass Thompson and assorted pistols versus about sixty goons plus another twenty elites loaded up on a mix of utter crap plus a few shit-wrecking surprises and coming from three directions at the same time. Once it's over it's a real loot parade though.

As far as hints, always use first aid kits to heal first, save medic bags for healing.
Give Pablo at the airport $10 when you find him, it saves a lot of headaches later.
If some mercs start shittalking each other, try to keep them in separate areas, you don't need them killing each other's morale or worse.
If you can, grab someone with a decent mechanical skill at the start and have them fix up any dropped guns you like the look of. Easy upgrade.
After doing a few little errands in the town with no loyalty monitor, there's a back room arms dealer who might have some nice stuff. You can also sell stuff you don't want to him.
In the above town, do not fuck around with the kingpin unless you are very prepared.
Keep any rods, springs, pipe, duct tape, and glue you find. A skilled mechanic can make neat stuff with them.
Also, if you find any marbles, give them to your best melee fighter. When dropped on the ground, they should knock prone anyone walking across them.

Starting out I hired Meltdown, Fox, M.D., and Steroid all for one week. That's left me with $7k.

How much money should I have in reserve? Should I just be spending everything I have?

Fox made a comment early on about Steroid giving her the creeps and not wanting to be near him, but other than that I haven't heard any fighting or complaints.

Has been a while since I played but essentially:
- game is easymode except for attack on first SAM site (because enemies will have rifles and you won't) and some of the late-game counter-attacks (because those guys have some godly gear and godly stats)
- game becomes incredible drag after you capture ~half the map because you will be managing militia, repairing equipment and fighting over and over in the same regions
- you can use initial budget to hire best mercs affordable for 2 or 3 days and blitzkrieg your way straight to Meduna

As for actual gameplay tips:
- proceed slowly, ambush enemies whenever possible (behind the corner, from stealth, etc)
- stay in teams of two or three people, take enemies out one at the time
- another viable approach is using one guy as a spotter keeping them stealthy and everyone else from outside of the enemy sight as a gunner, you can shoot at people you don't see yourself - you won't him much enemies won't do shit back
- two aimed shots are generally better than three snapshots, unless at point-blank
- best melee weapon is Crowbar, two hits will deplete anyone's Stamina making them collapse with exhaustion
- you can steal gear from enemies that collapsed with exhaustion but are still alive, this has significantly better "drop rate" than killing them
- night missions are dread early on but piece of cake once your people have night-goggles

No. First play the game normally, then decide if you want to wade in a sea of bloat to find out the few good things 1.13 has to offer. You can heal "dying" enemies to train Medical, they are considered non-hostile (helpless). When they restore to "critical" they count as hostile again and combat will start, but you will always have initiative, just punch them with bare fist (by the way, this punching trains Strength and maybe Dexterity) and if they don't die heal them again. Medical supplies are plentiful and you can easily train + 2 or +3 Medical per enemy. This doesn't work if the enemy is last one on the map, in that case they die right away.

Compared to X-Com, healing is pretty fast and it also takes much more for people to die.

>> No.3134393

There is a lot of good advice here already, such as the advantages of attacking at night. With NV, breaklights and night time specialists, night ops can be like shooting fish in a barrel. I will add a few other tips from my 3 months+ playing 1.13 recently.

Squad composition and equipment. This depends on your playstyle. If you are big on night ops, then it's all about NVG, breaklights, and silenced submachine guns. You will be too weighed down for assault rifles and you don't need their longer range anyway. With all the specialised equipment you need to keep the inventory light. More weight = less AP.

Assault rifles are required for ops in day time and wide open spaces. A day squad ought to have one or two mercs with a long range weapon, too.

It's common knowledge that Barry, Igor, and Grunty are all good choices to recruit from the beginning.

Forget about pistols and revolvers after the midgame, unless it's a flavour thing. Machine pistols like the Skorpion outdo them all and make good sidearms.

>> No.3134402

>>3134393
And speaking of being attached to certain weapons - I love the Ruger Mini 14. It is a very useful weapon to have earlier on. Reliable, 30+ range and in a common calibre - great long range weapon from the start, and can be converted into an assault rifle. Good backup weapon to keep around.

>> No.3135021

What's a good build if I want to dual-wield pistols the whole game? Which guns should I use? Is it atually viable?

>> No.3135036

>>3135021

Ambidex is probably going to be important to reduce the off-hand penalty. If you're going two-weapon, you'll want to do a lot of nightfighting, preferably with a one-handed SMG or machine pistol (silenced) and something large caliber (silenced) in the off hand for damage. Two pistols are generally too low-damage or too slow shooting and very low ranged for anything short of close-quarters. You can have a pair of Automags sent to you for helping escort someone from Chitzena, but it takes some time to get there. They are about as good as pistols get in 1.12.

You'll need 10 LAWs because only 1 isn't guaranteed to take down a tank in a single hit, and you'll have to account for misses (which happen pretty often). Or you can just savescum and try to take down every tank with 1 LAW.

Or do you mean the main building? The LAWs are only necessary for the adjacent maps (airport specially). If you're on the main building, you'll need an explosive of sorts to open the room where the final boss is at.
