It is a new character. Each Link is pretty much a new character. Except maybe in cases like Ocarina and Majora. Those Links are the same but sure as hell they're not the same guy that you play as in A Link to the Past or Windwaker.

Is it even possible though? Zelda games happens on a medieval-ish fantasy. I'm pretty sure I've never even seen an operation table or even bandages on any Zelda.
