I can already tell from casually checking /v/ that many there regard the ps2 as the greatest console of all time and that a majority of their is spent emulating gamecube and ps2 games. you also have to factor in the turbografx 16, colecovision, intellivision, nes, saturn, dreamcast, and a whole SLEW of other consoles. It's impossible for the ps2 to be better than all of those.

That said the rules at present are clear: only consoles released in 1999 or before, with the exception of the Sega Dreamcast, are to be topics of discussion.

The rules may one day change, probably when Gen 9 rolls in, but until that time comes, PS2 is against the rules.

Listen, the rules state Dreamcast is the most recent console. I personally think adding dreamcast unleashed the floodgates, and is causing all this bullshit.

Modern consoles are not bad. The PS2 was a fucking great console, and I would argue one of the best.

However, the board rules are pretty fucking clear. If you want to discuss anything not defined by the boards rules, go somewhere else.

However, people need to consider that in just a few years, the PS2 will be old enough to be considered vintage at least, if not retro outright and that rules can change over time. You notice the majority of the games are niche Japanese titles. JRPGs and shmups in particular get lower marks from Western reviewers because they're not flavor of the month garbage they get their signed checks from. Also notice how a lot of these titles have retained their value over the years. Paid reviewer scores don't mean shit.

There are arguments for and against including PS2. The most successful games on the PS2 were in similar genres to the most successful games of today. You could make a strong argument that games today are bigger PS2-style games with more of an online focus. In contrast, most successful games on preceding consoles were in genres that are not so successful today. They were also usually in a colourful, cartoony style instead of the darker, more 'mature' style of games of all home consoles of PS2 onwards with the outside of Nintendo consoles. There are exceptions to this such as MGS1.

There are also arguments for including the PS2. Its age is one. Sixteen years is a long time ago. It was also the last generation where most games were in an SD resolution, albeit 480i instead of 240p. Game mechanics were still unrefined in the early part of the generation. Compare GTA III and Vice City to San Andreas. The latter has parkour and modern-style camera controls, while the former two have awkward camera controls and only support jumping.

The biggest argument for PS2 being retro is online functionality. Yes, the PS2 supported online but it wasn't the major draw of the console for most people. Many of its best-selling games had no online functionality whatsoever. You had to buy a separate add-on to even go online until the slim model.

In contrast, the XBOX was a much more modern console. It pushed online gaming in a big way. had a paid online service, and had a hard drive as standard. However, it sold 24 million in contrast to the PS2's 155 million. It cannot be regarded as the defining console of the sixth generation any more than the SEGA Master System can be regarded as the defining console of the third generation.

It was also the last time that couch multiplayer was popular. Online multiplayer, paywalls and dlc are defining features of the seventh generation, not the sixth, just as 3D is a defining feature of the fifth generation despite also being present in the fourth.
