I don't know if I would have been able to find all the crests without a guide. Other than that it's a huge step up from its predecessor, I've never really understood the hate for the game either except that in general there are people out there who don't get what DQ is going for.

Zelda 2
FF2
Indirectly Mario 2 US

They are great games, but they do have some issues that were corrected in subsequent games.

As far as dq2 goes I love that game, however its issues are

Underpowered Prince of Cannock with horrible equipment selection

Bad sense of direction after getting shop.

Finding some of the crests

Leveling up took forever and the gains were set and minimal for several levels.

Difficulty scale late game along with enemies that span instant kill spells.

Yes I have played it many times. It is still one of my favorite games... I just don't get pissed off just be cause other people don't like it.

DQ2 is the first one I played, own, and beat. And I can tell you why it was bad.

Finding the crests without Nintendo Power/a walkthrough handy, the Cave to Rhone without Nintendo Power/a walkthrough handy, and Rhone onwards to the end. It wouldn't have been so bad if it didn't have stupid level caps for the party.

I beat the game on GBC without any guides. It took a long time, and I didn't hate the game for it. Provided hours of entertainment at work (I was a security guard at the time). Fun times.

This guy is an idiot. Says the game was a failure because "it only sold 150K in the US in comparison to the original's 500K". Everyone knows Nintendo gave the original away for free with subscriptions to Nintendo Power. If 150K out of the theoretical 500K people (ignoring the existence of rental places, which I reckon might have generated many sales) that had copies of the first game bought the second one because they enjoyed it, how can that be considered a failure? Seems like an acceptable percentage of the people wanted more, and I don't understand how anyone could say it didn't exceed expectations. The author seems like someone that didn't play the game "in its day".

In contrast, Square legend, lead designer of FFIV, Takashi Tokita calls it "the most influential game".
