So, I've been working on a modified version of the 2x2 collab park-- using it to make organized mini parks for fun and practice with theming. Anyways, this isn't anything special, but I just really enjoy the compact wooden coaster I made here and wanted to share.

Just want to say that, thanks to this thread, I decided to install OpenTTD for a second time. Didn't like it back then.

But now, with a few mods to make things look as Asian as possible (I'll settle for Japan), plus a proper tutorial playlist from YouTube, and man, I'm super comfy right now.

The two are quite different.

Locomotion is quite prettier, more detailed graphics than OpenTTD. But these days some people prefer the retro look of OpenTTD.

Locomotion is entirely about laying tracks for the trains, so it has better mechanics for that. But some complained that it feels too much like a puzzle, as sometimes all you do is laying tracks after tracks and nothing else.

OpenTTD got tons of mods and constant bug fixes. That's how we can have a mod entirely on everything Japan, from buildings to vehicles to trees and signal lights and etc.

Honestly both are pretty good games and not that different if you don't dig deep enough.

Locomotion +s:

* Arguably Prettier
* CURVED TRACK (this is the big one IMO)

OpenTTD +s:

* More advanced signals/Pathing AI (Loco AI loves to get lost on semi complex track networks without extensive use of waypoints)
* Shit-Tons of mods both cosmetic and gameplay, mostly accessible and painlessly installable from an ingame browser
* Better Working Multiplayer

They're excused as long as you promise to improve! Generally, you should always bank your turns as long as you're not going really slow. And it looks like you're using chain lifts as soon as you're going uphill, there's no need for that as long as you've enough speed. Look at real coasters and take inspiration!

>> No.3127148

>using as soon as you're going uphill
I normally use them right at the start of a coaster, to bring height to the cars. That's not bad design, is it?

It's the moments when they're going fast enough that I then know I don't need chains, but that's normally determined after doing a test, and I haven't been bothered enough by them to remove them :/

Also, I do try and bank my turns, but was more trying to work within the limited spaces lol

This isn't as interesting a question as you think, for purely mathematical reasons: the E/N ratio grows as E grows, but it also grows much more rapidly as N approaches zero. A ride with an E rating of 1 and an N of 0.01 has an E/N ten times higher than a ride with E=10 and N=1.

How the fuck do I make a side-friction coaster without that shit flying off the rails?

The one I designed doesn't make any sharp turns at all, and never reaches the peak an incline at fast speeds. But it's already crashed twice.

pls no bully for shitty park. I haven't played RCT in years, and am quickly going through the campaign in ORCT2 to try and get back into things.

>having trains leave the station in short intervals and not setting a time limit so they don't smash into each other when gravity/friction calculations fuck you over

deductive reasoning, don't give your trains a chance to hit each other; For even greater crash reliability just have one long train.

Side Friction is really just a crappier woody, so you really need to cheese with synched stations, close ride bonuses, and scenery bonuses.

>> No.3148123

>>3148104
I fixed that just now, but the original problem isn't the trains crashing into each other. Three times I've left the ride testing, and nothing has happened, but upon opening it, very shortly after, it just flies off the rails at a turn. One of the times was that very bottom right turn, which I made longer afterwards. It happened again shortly after, though I wasn't able to see where as it happened just as I shift+backspaced.

Don't build a turn right after a drop. You need to remove all the excess speed before letting cars take a turn. The easiest way to do this is to either build an uphill section before the turn or don't make your drops as steep. Your trains shouldn't be going much faster than ~15mph around those turns I think.

Well that would explain it I suppose. I'll tweak things out and see what I can do. Next on my agenda is learning how I can actually make good queues.

Peeps add mass in various quantities, side frictions can easily create a double edged sword out of hills and turns.

Physically they have nothing touching the 'floor' of the tracks, and with no banking all the lat Gs just tip them off the track

22 mph on a wide turn and 17 on a small turn are usually my speed limits, and the trains usually do better doing 180 or 45 degree turns, not 90.

>> No.3148159

>>3148140
Everyone fucking should. Jpegs should be removed completely as a file format.
We have hard drives that can hold up to 4 fucking terrabytes of data at once. There is no fucking need to compress the fucking images and make them look shittier as a result. This isn't 1994, this is 2016.
God fucking damnit.

>> No.3148161

>>3148149
I can't remember the exact speed limits but it's something like 15-22mph depending on the turn. On very sharp turns you want to kill as much speed as possible because even if the train doesn't jump the track the lateral Gs will wreck your ratings.

Be aware that you have to make the uphill section very close to the height of the drop preceding it or the train can go flying off.

>> No.3148165

jpegs are fine and have a place. The concern here is the opposite (of half) of what youre ranting about. Saving rct screens as jpeg INCREASES the filesize while degrading quality.

jpgs are optimized for 24bit color while png can compress down to as few colors as are in the image, which is 256 at most in rct rather than 16 million.

>> No.3148183

>>3148169
It introduces artifacts. Jpeg is optimized for photographs not pixel art, it sees all these perfectly straight lines and and it tries to blend them together with dithering which adds more colors to the pallet which inadvertently increases the filesize. Even gif is preferable over jpeg here.

I made some slight adjustments to keep it under certain speeds. It still goes a bit too fast, but I've had it running for half a year with no crash yet. Keeping inspection at 10 minute intervals, just in case though.

8bit PNG in particular uses anywhere from 2 to 256 colors, which is what you want for 256 color games. It means the quality will be more or less a replica of what your game looks like.

JPG compresses by adding a shit ton of blurry and blocky artifacts (like a low bitrate video), which 256 color games, pixel based games, sprite based games, and vector based games cannot afford to do. JPG does terribly with aliasing or any sort of jaggy edges.

OpenRCT2 has the ability to test unfinished rides, but you know what would be a great feature? The "ghost" testing from RCT3, where you can send a ghost image of the train around that disappears when it reaches the end of the track. That way you could test rides during construction without worrying about a crash.
