Silpheed's backgrounds consist entirely of FMVs, apparently.

It's impressive as shit if it's true, because they certainly aren't the usual Sega CD quality FMVs.

I believe it's FMVs that look like actual polygon graphics and have collision detection in the game so you have to actually evade shit that appears there.
The only actual graphics in the game are your ship and the enemies which are actually all pretty small sprites with little detail, but yeah the backgrounds make it look impressive, fun game, and great music.

Considering the acting, I'm inclined to agree.
That said it wasn't the best Gabriel Knight game.

The voice acting alone in Gabriel Knight 1 was fucking brilliant. Based Tim Curry hamming it up, Mark Hamill as your best friend, the wife from King of Queens and her cute fucking voice as your secretary, that gigantic motherfucker voiced by goddamned Worf, and especially the Voodoo narrator all blew GK2 out of the water.

The atmosphere was also unbeatable; a pixel art wet dream at times.

GK2 was a great game, but it simply didn't hold a candle to GK1. The remake sounds dismal, too. I'm very hesitant in trying it out.

I love FMV no matter how shitty it is. I'm into B-movies so it's very hard to dislike anything that has that 80s/90s cheese going on. Something about the smooth colors and the film quality really gives me these comfy vibes

Just look at these
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=474508CsyY8
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lUUUtZ55OE0
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QUvdCXL5cl4

Does anyone know what film these are filmed on? Especially the Thunder in Paradise has that sweet and smooth 90s TV show feeling. I would love to be able to film that quality, in HD of course, but with that same smoothness. I could make my own movie.
The games themselves are probably shit and I would hate to be the kid who got these for christmas, but as something to play/watch while getting drunk they're 10/10 entertainment.

Although Night Trap is legendary for its corny acting and plot, I like it.
Primarily because the story runs simultaneously in different parts of the house. While you're trying to trap 'monsters' in the bedroom you might be missing a conversation that's happening in the kitchen...

Capturing all the guys is easy but in doing so you miss a lot of the content and that gives it a sense of autonomy. Someone's coming into the living room, they're angry, why? Because they've just had an argument in another part of the house while you were in a third location setting off traps.

I must've played through it about half a dozen times, deliberately missing captures to I could absorb each person's story. Seeing that we're mostly used to characters who stand around for eternity until you interact with them their independence here is a breath of fresh air.

>> No.3120296

Road Avenger is great stuff.

Ones that are interesting are Tomcat Alley and Surgical Strike, although they can be quite frustrating, especially Surgical Strike.

>>3119710
>Wirehead
>Fox Hunt

Awesome choices, anon. Still a shame that there was no enhanced release of the former, and I still want Capcom to acknowledge the latter.

As for Thunder in Paradise, the reason why it looks like a 90s show it's because it's based off of an actual show that was on around that time. IIRC the game itself is based off of one of the episodes, but with additional game-only footage.

Yeah I had Night Trap as a kid and I enjoyed fucking things up on purpose to see what happened, or trying to catch dialogue or scenes without trapping the "monsters" and just trying to play it in different ways.

I think it was ahead of its time when it came out, there wasn't really a game, on a console at least, that was like it.

I don't know if I'd play it now, on the fence whether to bother playing it again but it was very interesting back in the early 90s

>> No.3122157

While it isn't an FMV game (though it was rotoscoped), The Last Express is a game with a timed script - characters will interact and converse with each other regardless if the player is present to hear them, and especially inattentive players will find their game come to an abrupt end without knowing how or why.
