Damn guys. I felt pretty accomplished. It took me four years to check off every game. Mortal Kombat 2 alone took forever, since whoever had it always wanted six hundred dollars. I played the waiting game and it paid off. Despite what you might think, yes, these are rare, by definition. Several orders of magnitude less copies made than their retail counterparts. I can pick a game that is supposedly 'rare' and find ten or more copies on eBay i.e. PDS or Little Samson.. But you will wait years before you see a Yoshis Island or MK II anywhere. Let alone all of them.

It's not a rare game. It's just a variant.

Also just because a game does or doesn't show up on ebay doesn't mean it's rare. A lot of the most common games rarely show up on ebay because they're worth like $2.

>> No.3098382

Rarity is a function of frequency or availability. If it isn't available it is rare. See: scarce. What don't you get about that?

>> No.3098404

>>3098392
>Rarity is a function of frequency or availability. If it isn't available it is rare. See: scarce. What don't you get about that?
We aren't talking about the availability. We're talking about how much was produced and how much survived.

Just because I can go buy your example of PDS doesn't change the fact there was only ever 20-30k made. The amount out there currently is obviously less. PDS is a very heavily traded game and always has been.

>> No.3098410

>>3098380
And for the record, I'd like an example of a 'common' game that is not on eBay in the dozens. I've tried several games that I've found to be quite common and very desirable, like Mario 64, Smash Bros, and even the most common game I know of, Super Mario Bros, and each returned dozens of results. Even something not sought after but common, like Ristar, and Sim City SNES.. Same thing. Dozens of results. I won't argue that the game on the ROM is rare, because that can be found anywhere. But the specific configuration of a PCB and cartridge sticker are very rare in the case of these NFR carts.

Regardless, I'd like to see some more posters. Ideally that chap that said he's got prototypes of games. That's far not interesting than this useless banter.

>> No.3098415

>>3098404
Then you've mistaken the definition of rare for that of something else.

>> No.3098423

>>3098415
To add to this, pds is more desirable. Probably not as hard to find as the NFR carts but it's in demand thus it's an object of attention. But none of this changes the fact that if it's easy to find and easy to acquire, it is not rare. That just makes something valuable. If it only came around once in a blue moon, THEN it is rare.

>> No.3098439

>>3098423
Not gonna argue with you for the risk of making that idiot think he knows what the word rare means, but in the case of mass produced videogames PDS is a pretty damn good example of something rare. Just because they're all available via eBay now isn't an accurate reflection of the underproduction of the game. I had three friends that pre-ordered at different EB's and mine was the only copy that got fulfilled. As far as consumer goods are concerned, that seems "rare" to me, by proportion if nothing else.

But do you think that it's more rare than an NFR or that NFRs are for some reason inherently not rare? I'm trying to understand why I'd be called out, as if they're not rare, when there is nothing but evidence toward the contrary. You're probably not the same anon so it may not matter anymore. They are a variant that was not meant to be sold to the public. I don't follow NFR games, but I'd not be surprised if each of them were significantly rarer than their respective retail releases and some of them could very well be rarer than stuff people have deemed rare like Flintstones 2 or Little Samson.

Bro just stop.

There are like 5 sealed NTSC-UC copies of Rule of Rose up, that doesn't mean it's not a low print run game that is pretty sought after. It just means that people are cashing in at it's current asking price.

Games are always going to have variable reliability, especially ones that are fairly worthless because a lot of the time they don't sell, so they get lotted up and auctioned off en masse.

You should have no problem finding a copy of any of those games on eBay, they aren't super rare.

Things that are genuinely rare, that had low print runs and are desirable will usually have a few floating around on eBay at any given time, but will occasionally go into a bit of a drought and be unobtainable.

Most of the time you can find any game off of any list with a quick eBay search. Sure, the "holy grails" of things like NWC or Stadium Events is unlikely, but if you're after something like that you're probably not going through eBay to acquire it.

I think it would be one of my MVS games. Of the games that I own Garou MotW, Windjammers and Last Blade 2 seem to sell for the most, but I have no idea how much of a role scarcity plays there.

I also have some other games like Radiant Silvergun, Earthbound, Rondo of Blood and Pocky and Rocky, but I'm pretty sure demand plays a bigger role there. Of my home console games, the retail version of Fire Emblem Thracia 776 is probably the rarest.

My nigguh. Best game on MVS.

My most expensive MVS game is Sengoku 3. I've seriously considered selling or trading it because it is a bit boring mainly because of how passive enemies are and how many hits they take.

I was really lucky to score a good kit of Windjammers before it got so expensive, it's insane how much the price went up. Oddly, if you look at older reviews about it most of them say it's barely an okay game. I guess they never got to play it with 2 players.

About Sengoku 3, I couldn't really get into it either. It looks great and animates well, but for beat 'em up standards it felt a little tedious.

I own a sealed copy of Night Trap for Sega CD, first version. The game itself is not that rare, but a sealed copy is a collector's item. I don't know what it's actually worth, but the shitty ebay prices jack it over 200 buckaroos. I don't know if it's reeeally worth all that, but I guess that's what people ask for it.

>> No.3099697

>>3099164
200 is probably pretty accurate. It was featured pretty prominently in the AVGN Sega CD video, so that's always at least a 100% inflation of a game's value right there.

Check pricecharting sales data, there was one sale in February for a same conditioned copy for $225, but there wasn't a sale prior to that until 2014. Now considering the retro bubble was still in its adolescence then, and has just gotten out of control in the 18 months since, 200 buckaroos is the only safe assumption of its current value now.

How the fuck are you going to sit here and equate a useable entertainment product to essential to life items? Are you genuinely retarded? Jesus Christ.

I got Conker's BFD from Sam's Club in a bundle with the official NP guide back when it was fairly new. I believe it was the day I found out that my childhood dog had died at the vet, ha.

Huh? The fact that they're essential life items only drives home the point harder. You couldn't possibly spend all that money, so give it to people who are starving.

That guy has mental issues. Hoarding isn't normal.
A lot people fool themselves into thinking they're not hoarders because there isn't trash bags everywhere. To them they think it's clean and just a collection.

I used to do that same shit before I downsized my collection. Never again. Much better to actually play the games.

I'd post a pic, but I'm at university and I haven't taken a pic in quite some time. Next time I remember I'll post one, probably Saturday.

there was a time where I would pick up almost any video game related stuff (manuals, cases etc) and would even buy games that I knew sucked and wouldn't play. Then after awhile I realized there was no point and started selling everything I didn't actually deem 'playable'. It's better to have games you will actually play and enjoy - especially since you can emulate something if you want to play it bad enough.

We might have had a misunderstanding. I was saying that communism is a good idea because hoarding any material good, including money, is selfish. I was pointing out how the absurdity of collecting material goods comes into sharper relief when you consider something non-essential like video games. You should have enough food to feed yourself of course, but anythin after that should be shared.

Sorry if I wasn't clear enough.

Feels weird seeing someone on /vr/ with these, like looking at my own bookshelf. I usually feel like I can't really talk about my 5th gen days here because of the language barrier.

P.S. I'm going to marry Suzuki Miho.

not much but in nice condition it goes for around 80-100$ on ebay.

Seems like not many Gamecube ex got sold because everyone was so hype for Wii and bought the Wii + Wii version instead.

I have it but I'm missing the case, the funny thing is the reason it doesn't have a case is because I got Picman for Christmas one year and when I opened the case picman was in there but behind all the pamphlets was twilight princess.

Expensive =/= rare.

So tired of retards parroting this. I don't mean that figuratively either. If you lack the mental capacity to understand that you should probably just off yourself.

Ever since the reality TV shows this has become an epidemic for all hobbies/collectors.

Rare does mean expensive.
Expensive doesn't mean rare.

Never heard that story before.
It's just a very uncommon, if not rare, game since it was only sold through Christian stores. Supposedly it came with a vinyl record, but apparently unconfirmed.

If existing copies do exist in single digits, then either people frequently keep reflipping them on eBay for insanely cheap, or people are playing stupid amounts for bootlegs.
