It sucks that we couldn't kill them in hl2. I always likened Gordon to a silent psychopath nobody knew about and now that everything was falling apart he could do what he wanted without anybody ever finding out. My Gordon couldn't have been happier about the black mesa sabotage. Hell my Gordon probably did it the bastard. Probably "accidentally" had loads of scientist killed during various experiments too

Half-Life's sound design was amazing. It just so happens that half the sounds were leftovers from the alpha version which were awfully low sample rate wavs. If you go through the sound files, a good number of them were clear but the rest were muffled and tinny.

I remember the PCGamer UK review ending on something like 'if this had come out first, the furore would have been no less'. Given it's even greater focus on teamwork bits, no Xen section, that wonderfully cute green snotball shooting creature and barnacle grappling hook, It'd probably have been rated even better for its innovation.

Quite arguably the best thing Gearbox ever did.

Also worth it just for console-commanding your way into Half-life's first level and having the nightvision instead of a terrible flashlight.

I thought that was kind of the point of HL2. Everyone idolises you as a messiah-like figure, when really you're just that one dude who was lucky enough to have a hazard suit, and willingly used dozens of your colleagues as pawns in order to save your own ass. Gordon has no say in the matter either way, and is thrust into the role of the hero almost as soon as he arrives.

>It's actually the same audio quality used in the original Quake, from 1996.
People always say that Quake 1 had great sound design but I've never thought so in terms of the non-soundtrack stuff. Going from Blood to Quake always feels so jarring in terms of sound quality. Blood sounds really crisp and awesome while Quake sounds all muffled and gross and under water.

>> No.3102102

Blood sounds like half the time they recorded the sounds so loudly that they peaked the mic. Really distorted and unnecessarily loud is how I would describe Blood's sound design.

In hl2 moral ambiguity is established with freeman opposing breen, who sold out earth to the combine which saved humans from extinction and sold them into slavery.
Freeman's actions could either free humanity or wipe them from existence with no possibility in between. People tell you you're doing the right thing because you're only hearing one side.

"Sacrificing them as pawns" is really too harsh. There was a clear sense of cooperation between the staff to try to escape/send for help/fight back. I think it's just common sense to see a guy in a hazard suit wearing guns and ammoand think he's your best chance at getting out alive. Obviously as Opposibg Force shows us any of your attempts to save people are for naught.

On a recent playthrough I went out of my way to save people, and aside from some scripted deaths like the Icythosaur a surprising amount of people are ae to be saved. The game almost has an arcade-like feel in this aspect, like you would be graded in the end based on how many NPCs lived.

>> No.3106980

>>3106834
>>3106841
No because the supression field has reversible effects. And the field goes down (I assume locally, not globally) when you blow up City 17 Citadel at the end of HL2. Then if you wait at the title screen of HL2:EP1, Dr Kleiner explains it all (apparently all that the field does is prevent creation of some critical enzymes or some shit needed by the fetus, but they start producing after the field goes down or you're out of range) after hijacking Breencasts and literally tells people to "get busy" when they have the chance so that humanity can go forward. Pretty funny scene.
