Hey guys, I'm going to start a new ps1 JRPG today. Any suggestions on what to play next? Last 1 I played was Star Ocean Second Story and absolutely loved it. I'll list the ones in my collection I haven't played yet. Parasite Eve 1 and 2, Chrono Cross, Legend of Dragoon, FF VIII, FF IX, Xenogears, Lunar 1 and 2, Breath of Fire IV. Thanks for any suggestions.

Valkyrie Profile should be high on your list. It's easily in the list of top RPGs on the system.

Shadow Madness is the most underrated JRPG on the PS1 (yes, it's a JRPG despite beign American). It's not as good as SO2, but better than most of your list.

Earthbound is a must-play for any JRPG fan.

I end up mentioning this a lot, but Star Ocean 2 actually plays out differently with different scenes and dialogue when you bring different characters

Well, this also applies to -not- bringing them, and actually one of the funnest ways to play the game is with a less than complete party.

Which is to say, playing with only Claude and Rena almost feels like a different game somehow, and there are completely alternate scenes that don't even happen in a normal game.

Parasite Eve is awesome, though I'd consider it more of a survival horror with strong RPG elements. It's basically Square's take on Resident Evil, and being square, they made it into an RPG.

Anyway, the main storyline is pretty short, so if you're looking for something quick to blast through, I'd pick that one. If I remember there's some extras in the post-game, but I haven't played the game since it came out.

>Rena constantly cucking Claude for Dias
>Rena has a Romance of 6 for Dias and only 5 for Claude
>gets him a sword to kill Claude with
>whole group is disgusted by her actions
>Dias dies
>Rena wants to "settle" for Claude
>starts trying to romance him

Nice try bitch. Game abounds with romance alternatives.

Parasite Eve's not really an RPG, just so you know. It's like a more turn based Resident Evil, lasts like 4-5 hours. If it's on your list play it first and get it out of the way since it's so short.

Nah, PE1 is its own beast, PE2 is closer to Resident Evil with some supernatural elements.

Claude and Rena fuck at her auntie's inn like 3 hours in. They fuck several times throughout the game. I'm not sure how Claude is getting cucked if he's constantly getting fucked.

Mein neger. VP is one of the best JRPGs ever, and absolutely underrated. Unfortunately it was released at the same time as the vastly inferior and massively overhyped Chrono Cross.

PE1 - fun and short
PE2 - meh, okay
CC - massively overrated mediocre game
LoD - shit
FF8 - eh, worth it at least
FF9 - shit
Lunar 1 - shit
Lunar 2 - better than the first
BoF4 - nice and solid

Others: have you tried Suikoden 2 or FF Tactics?

Absolutely, it's a decent RPG in its own right and you can import your endgame save data to S2 for some goodies.

Make sure to give the main character a name that starts with M because reasons

>> No.3083067

Yes, like other anon mentioned, play Sui1 first. Do a 100% game (i.e. collect all 108 stars if you can), then when you import your game into Sui2 you get even more special stuff.

Suikoden 2 is absolutely one of the best JRPGs of all time.

It works out in the end, after the tournament she hooks you up with a sword you can customize to fucking shoot stars with every attack.

Dias would probably win the tournament fighting with a herring, anyway.

that fight was such bullshit, he's like rabbitshoes fast and has infinite HP

it doesn't even make sense why he gets so much weaker afterwords, dude must have been doping

and then he ends up have the highest damage potential at the end of the game with hawk scream blast anyway

>> No.3084393

>>3084387
That game has a lot of fights like that, iirc. Kinda pushing it for an RPG to have more than 1 encounter that's impossible to win, and SO2 even had you lose in different ways. Some you just had to die to continue, and others were just on a timer you had to survive, made it annoying when I kept trying to fight something I was supposed to just run circles around for 2 minutes.

Honestly with Dias it's bullshit but with the Wisemen it was at least explained and relevant to the plot that you couldn't hurt them.

You could win all the other fights in the game, even I think one or two that you were otherwise allowed to lose (I think I remember a demon attacking on a boat?)

Judging the ones I've played:

Parasite Eve 1: Decent. Worth a go if you feel like playing a short RPG for a change

Parasite Eve 2: Not worth playing.

Chrono Cross: One of the nicest looking RPGs on the system. A bit too long, the story's incredibly convoluted and it has far too many characters, but as an RPG it's pretty solid for the better part. If you're looking for a traditional rpg however, this isn't it

Legend of Dragoon: About as traditional as they come. Possibly the most generic rpg in existence, with the exception of Albert Odyssey. I don't mean that in a bad way however, because it's completely solid and fun as an RPG, but there's nothing overtly special about it otherwise, apart from being Power Rangers: The RPG. If you just want a good, long, typical RPG then play this one.

FFVIII: Possibly the most polarising game in the series. It's actually better to be underleveled in this game and to use its mechanics to break your characters. As a result, some people love it but most don't, and it's only worth playing if you like the sound of such a challenge.

FFIX: Sublime. Probably the best Final Fantasy.

Lunar 1 and 2: Just emulate the Sega CD versions. Better music, and more enjoyable all round.

>> No.3084658

>>3084426
The battle transition alone takes a full 15 seconds before you can even input commands and the animations are slow as fuck, even death animations which are arguably the simplest thing you can do.

FF9 is plagued by slowness, and the high encounter rate exacerbates that, making it the game's biggest flaw by far.

>Alternate scenes just playing with Claude and Rena

I really should've assumed this would happen, since less people means they'd have to do more of the talking, but even though I've beaten SO2 at least once a year for over 15 years, I've never done a small party before. Welp, something to spice up my next run.
