I discovered once there was the soundcard Innovation SSI-2001 for the IBM PC based on SID chip.
Some russian guy made a replica of it and it works. Pretty great work.

The last batch of knockoff SID chips I heard about were just empty dip packages, some even has lead in them if you were lucky.

Funny, I was just thinking of the SID chip lately. I am no musician, but if I ever find the time and money to give it a go, I'd love to do it on the SID chip. I just love the sound it makes, but my country was pretty much dominated by the Spectrum so it's hard to find anyone who even heard about the system locally, much less an used model, and there's a very hefty import tax if I try that route, so I've been limited to those mp3s recorded on real hardware, and thinking of emulation until I can save enough to get a "starter kit" or even just the chip itself to tinker with.

Any of you knows or has a comparison between the real deal sound and current software emulations like VICE or such? I looked around youtube and google but couldn't find anything solid. But I am searching in English, so maybe there's something in some other languages that my search wording isn't covering.

On emulation, what would be the optimal settings in an emulator to get a sound as close as possible to the SID's sound? I looked at SID-wizard with defaults and sounds pretty decent already, and I heard software emulation is pretty accurate unless you go to the finer details, but it's kind of hard to compare without some sort of dedicated player.

When emulating, or for a potential purchase, which one of the two versions of the chip is the more likely to be "right"?

How is the SwinSID? Is it a valid alternative if using hardware? I saw a very tiny number of reviews, usually in german or some euro lang I can't even identify, and they seem pretty negative, but not sure if they are just being elitists or they got some legitimate points. The only comparison I could find seems pretty outdated, so I am hoping it has improved since then.

Are there any attempts to create more SID chips? is it possible to replicate them in some way? I am aware we peasants can't do it without factory tools, period, but in this world where the weirdest shit gets crowdfunded, maybe there's something I missed out there.

I... think sidplay2 was more than reasonably accurate. I think around 2008 they even got filters integrated that emulated the equalization you'd get effectively out of your computer, and all the bugs were properly emulated. iread something and they said one of the players is totally legit now and they had waveforms on an oscilloscope and shit.

You can get hardware sid players too. A couple years ago there were people selling two to four chip sets for writing your own music, and there's some publically available stuff like an Arduino shield schematic for it.

As for the 2 models of sid chips, which one you want is kind of a tough question to answer.

The original (6581) has several bugs and fairly fragile filters. The filters would break under comparitively little static shock compared to most other chips, however, the glitches in the filter were often used by musicians for special sounds or for PCM playback via rapidly changing their amplification.

The 8580 on the otherhand has far less fragile filters, but many other glitches were fixed as well. This means that many tricks used by musicians no longer worked. However, one can bias the filters on the 8580 to regain PCM playback IIRC.
