I also admit that being "good" isn't really an objective skill.

I used to be great at gaming when I was younger. Pretty much any genre I played with a good degree of skill. Now I just play rpgs. Maybe it's adult adhd, but it allows me to chill a few hours a day on a game and then walk away. Saga Frontier is kicking my ass though, going to have to learn how to play that one.

I'm still good at Tomb Raider and classic Resident Evil though, I've always enjoyed tank controls and I've played through those two titles dozens of times over the years.

I've thought about this. I've come to the conclusion that i'm not trying to be good at games, i'm trying to have fun. For example, i don't try to play through games in the most efficient way, with the highest score, or in the fastest way possible. My goal when i play video games is to somehow get enjoyment, how i do that doesn't really matter.

I like to distinguish between multiplayer games and single player games. In MP, "being good" is about conquering your opponent. I've tried many MP games, and mastered a few of them to the point where i could beat anyone i played against. That's a special kind of fun, that you get when you feel that you are better than someone else, but it's also very shallow. Because: it's fun because you trick your mind into thinking you're winning at life, when really you're just winning at a video game.

So, the other type of fun, is "absurd" fun. You're not tricking yourself into thinking you're good, you might fail over and over, or just be really bad at the game, but you manage to enjoy it anyway somehow. With this attitude, you can even have fun in MP games while getting your ass kicked. I've mostly stopped playing MP games now just to get away from the addictive "winning" kind of fun.

I'm decent at Quake and Xonotic.
I played Quake constantly as a teenager to the point of obsession so I have fairly strong intuition for the dynamics of gameplay, velocities, map control, unpredictable movements, etc. Plus like I said I'm a bit obsessed so that helps. I still occasionally speedrun Quake 1 just for the fun of it (on easy though because it's more fun that way).

I'm also semi-decent at RTS games but I can't compete with top players whereas I believe I scratch the surface of professional play with Quake 1-like game.

I'm a terrible, terrible player. I have memory and spatial problems. I've had big problems with games like Super Mario World taking forever for a straight run through. For learning a level for an FPS multiplayer game, it takes me a ludicrous amount of time. My brain doesn't seem to see it as important to pick it up. I think this is why I like to replay games a lot, I like the familiarity. I can get good at games if I play them a lot, I've been thinking about getting into speed running but wouldn't be challenging for serious records.

In real life I've gotten lost in simple locations and gotten weird stares, for example trying to exit through the utility/cleaning room. It took me years to be able to drive confidently like a normal person around my region.
