Purple prose, hammed up with over-the-top voice acting. Like I said, I really do like the underlying story, but it's so overwritten and melodramatic, even for a goth game.

Listen to >>3059142, OP. The Soul Reaver series is way better (in terms of both story and game play). You're better of playing the whole series up to Defiance and neither of the Omen games.

All the games has great story, especially voice acting, and is essentially why you play the later installments. It is however important to play them in the correct order and you should ignore anyone that says Soul Reaver is better and that you should ignore Blood Omen.

Order:
Bloom Omen 1
Soul Reaver 1
Soul Reaver 2
Blood Omen 2
Defiance

Blood Omen 2 is the weakest entry but tells you the consequences of Soul Reaver 2. Blood Omen 1 and Soul Reaver 1 has the best gameplay.

My keyboard was dead, its innards coated with the hot, bitter aftermath of the Ceylon Orange Pekoe that had erupted from my unguarded nose.

I should have prepared myself better for the torrential humour of this den of villainy, this Four Chan. I thought all the laughter had died within in me ages ago.

As I stared down at the wet ruin of my input device, I considered the chain of events that led to this travesty. It was a sorrowful afternoon, but as is the burden of all free men, I knew I had only myself to blame.

Well I am in full on nostalgia mode now.
I recall enjoying elements of this game, like the atmospheric creepy sounds/bg music, I seem to remember I liked being able to turn into a wolf. Shit I can even hear that teleport sound effect now too. Its wierd how vivid this game is in my mind, wasnt even close to being a favorite.

>> No.3061016

It's ok. I got super stoked on it for like a week and then put it down and never got back into it again. Similar to Final Fantasy Origins, it is difficult to pick back up on a saved game file if you step away from it for too long.

>> No.3061067

I fucking love it. Some of the criticisms in this thread are valid, but the game is such a blast to explore despite some of its issues. Anyone that sincerely thinks Soul Reaver has better gameplay can fuck right off. It's by far the best Legacy of Kain game if you ask me (though I think the first Soul Reaver is a good time on the whole).

The combat is a bit on the clunky side, but thanks to the feeding mechanic, all the spells and subweapons at your disposal, and VAE VICTIS it manages to be satisfying anyway.

The writing is heavy-handed and bloated but that's largely the appeal of it. It's melodramatic, but it's a grandiose adventure starring a vampire. It's exactly what it needs to be. It avoids the pretensions of Amy Hennig's tenure with the series for the most part, marrying its gothic aesthetics with a simple revenge story.

The dungeons themselves lend themselves better to replays than many games of its kind given that the game emphasizes avoiding traps and fighting enemies over outright puzzle solving. The puzzles are light and generally unobstrusive.

The replies in this thread are pretty shit so I hope this post is a little more fleshed out for you, OP. Definitely worth a try if you're into Zelda-style games.

I absolutely loved how hammy and overdone this game's tone is.

It's got so many gloriously evil characters, all with arrogant declamations and pompous trashtalking.

I particularly like the many well-executed stereotypes - the alpha wolf vampire Vorador, the animated-armour warrior Malek, the scheming Time-Streamer, the Necromancer, the other insane Guardians of the Circle. It's so satisfyingly exaggerated, whether it's the four-armed demons, the whoosh noise and lighting change when you use flame sword, or, er just almost everything in the game.

You get a lovely oldschool feeling when you find a secret area or use a new spell. Wolf Form, Mist Form, Bat Form and several other classic vampiric abilities such as Dominate Mind dare necessary to get through the game, and you can get hold of some really fun spells like Mass Hatred and Lightning Storm.

Flame Sword, Chaos Armour and Invulnerability spell are an OP combo, it would be a much more challenging game without those.

Bravo! I forgot about how over the top the narration is. The main vampire character is totally full of himself, dos it's pretty unique and pretty hilarious.

Anybody else notice how when there is too much stuff going on on screen, the game lags a little so you have more time to think about how not to take damage?

Mediocre, blatantly unfinished was rehashed into a LoK game from another game, story was basic and lackluster but not bad, had a decent amount of exploration. gained enough popularity to get a sequel.

Horrible game, shit story, linear gameplay, even more unfinished than the first game.

Another rehashed game, contrived plot barely fits into any of the other games plot, complete mess of a game both story and mechanically.

I agree with this for the most part. I don't think Blood Omen is necessarily the best for its storytelling (although it does very well in that regard thanks to Kain's monologue), though. I'm not sure if that's what you're implying, but I really think BO is the best and most interesting game in nearly every way. It's the most fleshed out mechanically and it's a lot more satisfying and interesting to explore.

I think the first Soul Reaver is pretty good, but I can see how you'd feel that way about it. I agree wholeheartedly with the rest.

I initially had that reaction, but after thinking about it, BO2 is actually more interesting and fun from a mechanical perspective; it just takes the story in a retarded direction. Don't get me wrong; I've never liked Blood Omen 2 as a whole game, but it actually has more going for it mechanically. Defiance had more fighting moves, but BO2 had all those spells and abilities.

Soul Reaver 2 was pretty middle-of-the-road mechanically but a good continuation of the story, and Defiance was mechanically a decent Devil May Cry type game but a horrible attempt to reconcile Blood Omen 2's weird retcons.

Granted it might not be to everyone's taste but the writing/voice acting in this game is great. It wants you to play it while drinking red wine and wearing a trenchcoat and knee high boots.

Soul Reaver is much less hammy in this regard (and has arguably some of the best VA in gaming), but you are so goddamn pleb tier if you can't into Hammer Horror style gothic ham.

It is, but I think it suffers for it. It's one thing to be somewhat shlocky but self-aware, it's another thing to still be shlocky but operating under the false pretense of being something intelligent.

I still like the story of the first Soul Reaver, though. The real problems with the story didn't start rearing their head until Soul Reaver 2.
