Only had a short play of the arcade version once back in the day, and had the view that it was pretty good. Playing the digital rerelease on PS3 ruined that opinion.
The arcade audio translates really well, the visual design is ace, and the cameos from early Simpsons and other Matt Groening characters are neat, but the gameplay stinks. It's a pretty shoddy fighting game.

I've mostly played the Japanese version (as in 99%), but from what I've read, the JP version is easier. It was also released later apparently, so I guess it might be the "complete" version.

I'd be curious to know if some of the bosses were at one time intended to be characters in the show itself.

I just can't enjoy beat-em-ups anymore. As a kid my friend and I loved it and played it a lot. A few months ago we were at a arcade that had it and got bored after five minutes and mvc2 and 3S instead. Only beat-em-up I still find myself playing is astro boy omega factor, which isn't retro. I find them to repetitive today unfortunately.

The Simpsons is a simple beat 'em up (it doesn't have a lot of variety of moves and what noe) but it is by no means a low quality game. If you don't like the simpsons, then probably you won't like other more complex or "technical" beat 'em ups anyway.

I still play it with friends to this day in a local arcade. They just replaced the joystick, buttons, monitor and cover art. Looks and plays like its brand new.
We try to beat each other on who can spend the least amount of money when clearing the game.
