Have any of you used one of these before, and what was it like? Was it a positive experience? Like how would you ever need a portable SNES?

This has been made completely obsolete by smartphones/tablets + emulation + USB controllers.

There is literally no reason to own this.

My god, what the fuck is it like carrying around that shit? And if you don't carry it around then why the fuck aren't you using a real goddamn PC/laptop to emulate?

>> No.3043675

>>3043660
I only use my controllers when I emulate on my PC. I just threw those in because the one upside I can think to this thing is the tactile feedback, which smartphones don't have. Other than that, a smartphone is a superior machine.

I have one and like it. Its not a replacement but a good supplement when your tv is in use and you want to play snes games. (Also visitors think its fucking awesome.)

Pros:
Decent build quality.
Plays many games faithfully so long as the battery is sufficiently charged.
Buttons feel great, almost like the snes controller.
No noticable button lag.
Runs all games that dont need an extra chip (if the cartridge has only one set of pins)
Compatible with SFC games.

Cons:
Speakers are tinny. Sounds pretty bad at high volume.
Screen is not that great. Picture is pretty artifact-y.
At low battery, the screen starts to get staticy and fuzzy, like the soc is not getting enough current.
No battery indicator. This drives me up the fucking wall.
Games with special chips sometimes dont run (if the cartridge has three sets of pins).
iirc, the controller ports only work when av-out is in use.

Chip games that run for me:
Starfox, Yoshis Island

That dont run:
Mario rpg, kirby 3

This product actually is not terrible.

It is not a "handheld" but rather a portable/on the road console. The best part about it is that you can hook it up to a TV and connect 2 actual SNES controllers to it and play it as though it were a full sized SNES.

Also it works with the Everdrive, so most times you just need that cart.

It is really good for vacations and road trips. The type of trip where you will be traveling but also have a destination in mind where you will be for several days.

Went on a 12hr road trip w/ bros to visit another bro who was temporarily relocated for work (he was living out of a hotel suite for 8 mos before he moved back to our town).

During the 12 hr drive we forced our Zelda playing bro to playthru A Link to the Past with commentary and TRY to tell us why it was bad.

We then rummaged around the Everdrive for games we had never played before and had an afternoon long Looney Tunes B-ball tournament.

We then assigned one of our buddies to speed run a game of his choosing while the rest of us cooked dinner. We all did various dinner prep while watching, chatting and cheering on our friend run through Contra 3.

It was pretty great.

I haven't used one but have only heard bad things.

That thing really isn't portable, you'll basically be asking to have some mug you carrying that thing around especially if you were stupid enough to actually play something like earthbound on that in public. Also I've heard of battery problems and the d-pad being shit.

Honestly I know there are better alternatives but I use a psp 3000 and honestly I'm fine with it. Maybe get a psp go if you actually care about portability unlike me.

>> No.3044049

My friend has one, but it never works properly. She mostly uses it as a home console; there's always a problem with the controller ports or the sound or something. She's had my copy of EarthBound for months without playing it because she can't get it working right.

It's like carrying something less unconfortable than OP's image.
Also, all what you need to emulate is either a PSP with custom firmware + a SD card or a New 3DS with an R4 cart.

I have one, it's alright for testing games without having to be next to a tv.

It's not small, the battery life isn't great, and when it is low it freaks out like it's broken, which is why I got it cheap on ebay, they thought it was broken.

I really want a portable nes that is cheap, or an adapter to make this thing play nes games.

I agree with your premise that a smartphone+controller combo is unwieldy.

Nevertheless, does THIS fuckin thing look like it's really convenient on-the-go?

I got one, unfortunately I got one of the first run models that had a bug that deleted save files. Damn shame, too. I gave mine to my cousin who was getting into collecting SNES and the games he had on his want list were mostly games that didn't save.

>>3043929
>Mario rpg
Mario RPG actually ran on mine. It's one of the many games I own that had a save file from when I was a kid wiped.

So if I understand correctly, you'd be carrying around physical cartridges so that you can load the ROM into an emulator that only works for one platform anyhow.

Sounds like a winning plan?

>> No.3045150

It's a hardware clone, not an emulator.
