I switch regularly between these two,
because some wads are absolute unplayable with PB but run well wit BD
(especially the very optimized BDv20b!)

You want a different game, try DOOM 4 when it comes out, right up your alley.
Really though every "Brutal" project has to fuck shit up by changing what the monsters do or just making it so zombie soldiers and sergeants can fire automatic weapons, not to mention Chaingunners also fire faster so every map becomes a chore of dealing with those fucks.
If your bored of DOOM try Smooth Doom and try Ultra Violence or Nightmare instead of installing unbalanced "gore" mods.

Doom and Doom 2 on nightmare are legitimately difficult challenges, assuming you don't savescum, which no one should.

I recently played through Doom on nightmare!, and was able to beat episode 1 - 3 but it required real mastery of the level. Episode 4 I can't even get through the first level on nightmare, but neither can most other people as it requires a red key clipping glitch due to low health/hitscanners in the level.

I am currently playing through Doom 2 on Nightmare and it's pretty fucking tough, but loving it. Completely different way to play vs UV (which everyone and his mother have beaten 1/2 on).

Also normal ammo rather than double ammo.

I prefer nightmare though. The constant threat of monsters coming back to life means that you have to execute the level quickly and can't enjoy the luxury of slowly taking out enemies from relative safety much of the time.

There is no breathing room and taking advantage of all secrets/level layout etc is a must.
