What are the best fighting games from the SNES/Genesis era? I didn't really get into them until PS1 and I've only really played Street Fighter II and Mortal Kombat. What else from this gen is worth giving a shot?

I have no idea what people see in Super Street 2 on SNES. It's not a Super Turbo port so no Akuma or Supers, it's ugly, sounds like shit and it has random slowdown for absolutely no reason.

Yeah pretty much anything SNK.

That's why I like it. Supers ruined fighting games imo.

I like resource management but I wish more fighting games would deviate from the norm and get creative with it.

Weaponlord is interesting, but most console fighters from the 16 bit era really don't hold up well anymore.

The 16 bit consoles really weren't powerful enough to do the arcade fighters of the day justice. The games designed from the ground up for consoles were rarely on the same quality level. Weaponlord is one of the better ones.

What about it? Obviously is not arcade perfect, it's a port on a 4th gen console, but it's pretty decent. The elimination mode is also fun and, I believe, exclusive to the SNES version.

The Genesis and PC Engine versions are good too. Genesis being the most weird one, it's very different than the arcade, and very broken, but because of that it's fun. PCE and SNES are more similar to the arcade.

Then again, FF Special is probably better anyway.

Anyway, my top 16-bit fighting games (exclusive to console, not arcade ports) are:

4. Power Rangers: The Fighting Edition

Great fighting game by Natsume for the SNES, big sprites, fast gameplay, cool stages.

3. Yuu Yuu Hakusho: Makyou Toitsusen

Awesome fighting game by Treasure for the Genesis. Well, the Mega Drive, it was only released in Japan and Brazil. Made by the guy who later did Guardian Heroes on Saturn.
Supports 4 players, basically the Genesis' own Smash Bros.

2. Gundam W: Endless Duel

Exclusive for Super Famicom in Japan, this is also by Natsume and it uses the same engine from the Power Rangers game. Bigger, more attacks, more frentic gameplay, possibly the objectively best fighting game on 4th gen systems.

1. Dragon Ball Z: Super Butoden 2

Personal preference. This game can be mad fun if you've got a friend who knows how to play it. Dashing around, charging ki, pulling off meteor combos and power clash, it's frentic as fuck and even more if you input the turbo speed code. On top of that it has a great presentation with an interactive story mode and a memorable soundtrack. This is the peak of the Butoden game series, not even Shin Butoden on Saturn could surpass it.

Counting arcades? Anything by Capcom, Fatal Fury 2, Fatal Fury Special, Samurai Shodown series, Power Instinct 2.

On consoles? Shin Kidou Senshi Gundam W Endless Duel, Joy Mech Fight, Nekketsu Kakutou Densetsu, Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers Fighting Edition.

Agreed, there's not much point in touching a SNES/Genesis fighter unless you're totally allergic to emulators. Most console exclusives straight up suck, and the arcade ports are not as good as the originals. There are some good ones, but if you're like OP and have only tried MK and SF, probably the next stop is SNK/Neo Geo.

I forgot to mention Sailor Moon SuperS for Super Famicom.

The best thing this game has, apart from pretty girls and nice graphics, is that the VS mode has a pretty interesting customization options. Worth trying it whether you like Sailor Moon or just fighting games.

Fighting games can age. The people that play them are a part of their quality. A dead fighter is worse than a fighter with a sizable community every time.

There were a lot more quality fighters in the late 90's than in the SNES/Genesis era IMO, but:
>Darkstalkers (1994, still within SNES era)
>SF Alpha 2 (actually had a SNES port despite coming out in 1996, though the port's quality is questionable)
>Fatal Fury Special (1993, peaked the FF series until Real Bout came out a couple years later)
>Fighters History Dynamite (1994, personally one of my favorite fighters from that early period when everyone was still copying SF2's playbook verbatim)
