It got a remake on the ps2, but I wouldn't recommend that - it changes the story and the mechanics quite a bit. If you grind for a little right at the very beginning (get Alis up to level 5-8 or so), its not that hard.

The games are only sorta related to each other, and aside from a few callbacks, you're not missing too much if you play them out of order.

Modern player here, just started phantasy star IV, never played any other game of the series before. Perhaps someone will get mad at it since apparently it spoils some thing? but I heard that it was the most accesible one. I just got Rika in my party and I'm having fun with the game, but I have questions about it
Is there a skill description or something like that? I still have no idea of what Chaz's earth tech or Gryz magic do
Is there a map, unlockable later or something? I'm not having problems right now, but I imagine that if I drop the game for a week due to work I'll have some issues finding some places. I like how they made a memo with the talk command though
I spent like an hour in that basement on Gryz village dying like a bitch left and right. Still fun.

3's alright, but it's not very popular. It's something of a black sheep for the series - a different team developed it, and it was rushed, so the good ideas it had were lost in the execution. I wouldn't recommend it as your first game in the series, but it's a nice side-story with some cool quirks.

4 is probably the best-executed, but it ties in pretty heavily with 1 and 2, so you'll get more out of it if you play those first.

2's pretty grindy, but the dungeons/mazes are fun, and it's got a decent cast of characters you can actually choose from.

1 is old and shows it, but it's still a great game. If the remake didn't butcher its relatively nonlinear plot, I'd recommend that.

I'd skip straight to 4, if you think 1's too unpolished. 2 and 3 were a little rushed (3 moreso than 2, though they both suffered from it), and you won't be too lost in 4 without playing the others. There are a few callbacks, but it stands well enough on its own.

If you do start with 3, it's almost entirely divorced from the rest of the series (there's a brief, missable callback to 2 near the end), so no worries there.

The SNES port of Wizardry came out ten years after Phantasy Star 2.
Automaps were however used in Bard's Tale 2 (86) and in a way in Ultima 3 (83).
But mapping square based dungeons by hand isn't complicated.

I know Ultima ditched the first person dungeons because it made programming more complex. Another layer in which stuff happens means another layer where things can go wrong.

As others have said, it's not bad, but it doesn't really live up to the reputation the rest of the series has.

You don't need the other games to understand it (as it's basically a side story away from the main plot in 1, 2, and 4), and it only sort of obliquely references 2 near the end.

I'd say it's a poor introduction to the series (it was my first PS game too), but it's a good enough game. It's not horrendously broken or grindy or anything, and the pretty big differences between Ayn and Nial's quests make it worth playing through a second time (the 3rd generation differences are small enough that I wouldn't worry about beating them all unless you really like the game).

Do you mean Profound Darkness, or Dark Force?

Dark Force is just a fraction of PD's power, though, so I guess Giygas would be stronger than DF, but if we're comparing PD to Giygas, then Profound Darkness wins, hands down.

PD (via time travel shenanigans or in other, unexplained ways, depending on which PSIII ending you take to be canon) destroyed two planets - Earth and Palma, and presumably successfully corrupted two star systems, plagueing Algol for thousands of years in the process of escaping its prison.

C/D: Odin with the Laser Gun is one of the best characters in PS1. Not as powerful as Alis, but doesn't require MP to do damage, damages every enemy on the screen, and enemies will never be able to dodge his shots (which, considering how much enemies dodge in PS1, is very useful).

Actually, for the bosses, it's better if you arm Alys and Odin with Laser Guns, because even if their weapons are 1.5x times stronger than the gun, the gun never misses, and their weapon usually does.

Sounds like channels cutting out. Normal game behavior. Pause during a battle at the right time, wait a bit, and when you unpause, you'll notice that some of the music channels are missing until either the song loops or the battle ends, forget which.

There's also another fun bug where you talk to Lutz at the end and all the sound cuts out. If you teleport out of the final dungeon when this happens, the game freezes. You have to not warp to the final dungeon and instead go to town and save/reset the game at which point it functions normally.

Headcanon time
According to the compendium Lutz and Alis had a lot of alone time together away from Odin and Myau for a few years after Phantasy Star.
Rolf could be the great grandson of Lutz. Making him the first candidate to receive Lutz's memories to become the second Lutz. The Lutz title and position continues down a genetic line and that makes Rune a descendant of Rolf.

Anyone know where I can find scans of Phantasy Star: Out Side Saga?

I need help

I have a Lv 42 HuMAR in PSO 1 & 2 and I'm trying to beat Dark Falz on Normal. I have most spells at the highest level HuMAR can have them. I have at least one Scape Doll. I'm on a plasma TV, so my reaction time will be abysmal due to screen lag. How do I beat him? I have a cheap 3rd party memory card which wipes my save after the 40-hour mark. increase your ice resitance
for hard mode and higher you also want light resistance

as a hunter if you dont have a decent rare weapon use a raygun from the shop or any better handgun type weapon
its best to keep your distance when attacking so you avoid getting hit with slowmo status
falz is also weak to zonde in his first form and both zonde and barta in his second form

for third form which is only on hard mode and higher you just want to make sure you have enough hp and light resistance to survive his attacks and use handguns, foie, and other ranged weapons to attack him

What if the Earthmen in Phantasy Star 2 are the Coralians?

PSO Episode 3 reveals that the Coral Government found another planet to inhabit other than Ragol and that was the last we heard from them

In PS Zero Coral was renamed Earth under Mother Trinity's influence

Most of the mothers that Dr Osto made went crazy because the d-cells used in their cores matured into dark falz. Dr Montague and Calus seemingly found a way to fix this and was able to activate Delta safely.

PSO's MOTHER AI is called "Delta" which is number 4 in greek
Phantasy Star Zero's Mother Trinity can be associated with 3

going by the numbers there are 2 more mothers

PS Zero has another Mother AI, the Heaven's Mother
and Phantasy Star 2 has Mother Brain

Q:But if the theory of PSO happening after PSIII is true then how can the Earthmen be the Coralians?
A: Coralian's have FTL technology.
Their ships travel faster than light and probably time travel as they approach their destination.

Noah might possibly be pioneer 3

For lots of little, one-shot kills, a handgun is a safer bet. When you need to dig in and kill some bastard, go with the mechguns.
I've never bothered with Zonde, myself. I don't use any of the offensive techs until the mines generally, where Gizonde(or even Razonde, if you're a Force) can tear apart anything, though I save those shots for the Canine(?) groups.

Yes. There is no continuity between Phantasy Star & PSO no matter what crazy fan-theorists tell you.

Classic PS is classic PS. PSO and PS Zero have a very weak relation to each other that may as well not be there. PSU and PSP/PSP2i form yet another continuity. And PSO2, Nova (and that awful anime) are yet yet another continuity. Any crossovers such as Red Ring Rico or Nagisa appearing in PSO2 are handwaved as 'dimensional travel'.

Well, mostly PSII it would seem.

>> No.3039051

I got bored and autistically calculated the diameter of each sphere of Alisa III.
all of the shops have the same size
It takes ten steps to walk horizontally from wall to wall on the inside of a shop
and 5 steps to walk completely across a store front in a town map
so steps in interior to town maps are 2:1
dungeons to town maps are also 2:1 because I also measured the steps taken in the landen castle dungeon from the castle throne room to the shop exit and the distance actually worked

town maps take an average of 60 steps to cross horizontally
double that to account for the steps taken on the interior scale and its 120 steps across

on the overworld map it takes only 2 steps to cross a town front so each step on that scale is actually 60 steps
because its tedius to walk across the overworld while running into battles I measured the overworld by pixels
each town is 33 pixels across, so 33 pixels is 120 steps
each world sphere is 3007 pixels across
now to convert to steps
3007 / 33 = 91.12121212121212
91.12121212121212 x 120 = 10934.54545454545 steps
now I'm going to equate a step to a geometrical pace which is 1.5 meters, representing the distance between the places at which the same foot rests on the ground in walking.
10934.54545454545 x 1.5 = 16401.81818181818 meters

so the diameter of each sphere of Alisa III is 16.4 kilometers.
after doing the area calculations there are about 211 square kilometers of land and water surface area in each sphere.

What we need is a proper, well-done remake of PS3 - though even if Sega was to do like what they did with 1 and 2 I'd be okay with it. Something faithful to the original in all of the ways that made it good - the atmosphere, the music, the overarching story - but with actual effort put into the dialogue, the dungeons, the enemy sprites, and the tech system.

I'd try to do it myself, but I have neither the requisite art skills nor the time to undertake a coding project of that scale; and I'd feel bad asking someone else to do that if I couldn't put any effort towards it myself.

I'm actually shocked that no one's hacked the rom to fix it. That and removing the annoying foreground (or at least altering it so it's not quite so obnoxious) would be pretty huge quality-of-life improvements to the base game, since the game lives and dies by its dungeons.

IT. WAS. ANNOYING.

Maybe less so if the camera was fixed, but that damn foreground layer was rage-inducing. There are certainly better ways to introduce a futuristic aesthetic without covering up half the screen at all times. It wouldn't be so bad if it wasn't present in nearly every interior dungeon (caves got a fog effect instead).

And they had the gall to bring it back in G2.

Something you should get used to in a hurry is that there are two major types of enemies; biological and mechanical. Many skills and techs only work on one of the two.

Chaz's Earth skill stuns an enemy for at least on turn. It may affect both types, but I sincerely don't remember if it'll work on robots for sure.

Gryz' Brose tech attempts to instant-kill an entire group of enemies, but the catch is that it only works against robots.

There are no maps, but aside from one or two places, the dungeons tend to have a relatively unique design. You can stumble your way through easily enough if your levels and tech/skill usage are sufficient.

>> No.3110869

>>2978572
Casts never had techniques, though. Some humans didn't even have technique, like Odin from PS1 or Rudolph from PS2. Then there's Wren and Demi from PS4, who are both lacking in techniques.

The plot-reason is that Techniques are derived from psychic power, and some humans simply don't develop those powers, and cybernetics/androids simply do not have any psychic potential at all due to the mechanical nature of their being.

PS3 is fucking weird and doesn't follow the rules and does its own thing. You can't realistically count that, especially since it was developed by another team that had no idea what the fuck.
