Anyone remember the good old Quake II mod; Action Quake 2?
A thread to reminisce about the great mod and one of the only ones with truly localized damage system.
Also:
I heard from the official site that they're going to try and reboot the game with a winter cup that has a cash prize.
So, what was your experience, if any, with Action Quake 2?
Want to return or try out? Check out the official site http://aq2world.com/ !

I hated Action Quake 2. If I wasnted realism I would have played Half-Life but I didn't play Half-Life, I played Quake 2. I'll never understand why anybody would make a boring real life weapons mod for such a fantastical game. Railguns and flying sausages, that's what the game is all about.

Loved this kind of mod back in the day, though I only played Specialists mod until about 2006-7, after which it died.

Since TS' revival on Steam sucks monkey balls, I might try this one out.

I played this at school lans before we got cs loaded on. Was so awesome playing with real guns and reloading and stuff. So rare at the time....

AQ2 was made by gooseman too before he did CS, you can see a lot of CS stuff that got implemented into AQ2

I used to play that shit all the time. But since 3D cards really started getting super popular and it allowed the GL exploit, it kind of killed things for me.
Played it again a few years ago, nostalgic but it still mostly sucks for netcode and weapon mechanics. Vastly improved by AHL and TS.

>>2892674
AQ2<AHL<TS
Each one got progressively better for the action gameplay formula, barring the trick jumping/bunnyhopping in AQ2 If that was your thing, AQ2 is going to be great for you. But otherwise it's not as good of a game.

>>2894151
>AQ2 was made by gooseman too before he did CS
No it wasn't. Contributing some models doesn't mean he made the game. Cail and Pietro were the programmers. Cail also did models, maps, sounds. Vain came did skins for models. Bartender did sounds and project management. These were the essentially founders.
Then Ace, Suislide, and Goose who did some models and some code for animations. Suislide also contributed his name, and all noobs thus became Suislide.
The entire 'team' regardless of what they contributed consists of :
Patrick 'Bartender' Mills
Dallas 'Suislide' Frank
Sam 'Cail' Thompson
Nathan 'Pietro' Kovner
Jon 'Vain' Delee
Evan 'Ace12GA' Prentice
Minh "Gooseman" Le
A few people contributed other things in the logs for thanks. But AQ2 was not "made by gooseman." He was a member of the A-Team who made it. That's sort of like saying Kevin Cloud created Quake.

Despite TS being mechanically superior there are still many elements that AHL had that could make it more enjoyable. The different special items and the injury system in AHL roped me in and made for my favorite Last Man Standing experiences ever. I remember one match on the bank office map where I got into a fire fight and got hit and ran away to the office cubicles and left a trail because I was bleeding. I went to hide in a cubicle and realized my mistake as I was bandaging and went to the adjacent cubicle. He followed the trail not thinking I noticed it and fell for the trap and I felt really god damn cool.

Also AHL had the Hondo maps with the fucked up secret levels. You could load them up in TS or something and still try doing those parts but I'm fairly sure they're optimized specifically for AHL's features and may not entirely work otherwise.

I've never found Hondo secrets all that interesting and don't really consider them a significant benefit to the game. If anyone knows about them they can become more of a hindrance to the game than anything. So I actually consider them more of a negative since they the presence of them either goes unnoticed or negatively impacts gameplay. Easter eggs are one thing, but that Hondo tier shit will cause people to disappear from a match for a significant period of time.

Bleeding yeah, I mean I get it, it's nice, and I've often winged people in the leg to constantly fuck with them in AHL or to slow an approach to escape groups. It changes up things and makes it different. But overall the better gameplay mechanics of TS all around is just too good for that to matter. The weapons are tighter for the most part, the movement is tighter, and like AHL it's the only other mod I can recall with reworked netcode so the game actually works right (CS could take a couple lessons from both these mods). Plus the whole other side of the leg damage and bleed system is that there's a leg damage and bleed systems, it's also kind of annoying. Which like I said, I would fuck with people, I would constantly just shoot them in the leg over and over again and leave them to bandage. People were not happy.

Oh there's no way around it, TS was an overall better game, but AHL had its own cool gameplay things going on. If I chose to play AHL instead of TS I wouldn't regret it until I decided I wanted to use kung fu. The garbage hand to hand combat and some of the special items are the real hindrances if anything.

Also the real issue with Hondo maps I imagine wouldn't be people running off in games to solve mysteries but the way it renders a bunch of shit that's as big or bigger than the part of the level you play in. If I remember right it wasn't uncommon to play on versions of the map that excludes them entirely but my memory could be betraying me. Regardless if you haven't grabbed a friend and tackled 5am you missed out.

Speaking of action mods, did you ever fuck with The Opera? Really weird and not super well made.

>> No.2896714

Never liked it. It was pretty annoying when it was "featured" on so many servers back then.

>I decided I wanted to use kung fu.
Neither one did kung fu all that well and TS usually ended up being get powerup and jump roudhouse kick instakill everything or jump kick weapons from enemies hand and pull out gun/knife.

>Regardless if you haven't grabbed a friend and tackled 5am you missed out.

I don't really remember the secret in 5am, but I would preferred if he took the effort to make the normal part of the map not shit though. That map was fairly crap. I'm glad I missed out on that and instead had to settle for enjoying gameplay instead.

I did play The Opera though. Sure, I've played much worse mods though, it wasn't spectacular or anything but it was something to blow a night on. Don't seem to remember if there was any multiplayer at all, if there were I don't recall it have any players. It was mostly just a diving mook slaughter simulator from what I recall, got old fast compared to AQ2SP, which was a mod of AQ2 that basically played AQ2 weapons in Q2 SP with coop.

Still one of the most demanding FPS games you can play. Very hard and fast in teamplay mode. Combining bunny hopping, manual keys for everything, heavy leg damage and fall damage.. A truly EPIC FPS that still has some people in finland regularly playing.

Honestly a remake of this with modern graphics and features would be pretty swell.

Speaking of Quake 2 mods, I really want to play some Gloom some time if I could get enough people on a server. Fuck I used to spend all my summers playing that shit in high school, most technical team based mod for Quake 2 hands down.
