is it really the best Might & Magic title? i only played VII and VIII

It's a toss-up between this and World of Xeen.

M&M6 has the flying and massive dungeons plus ties to the HoMM2 storyline, World of Xeen has the better, more colourful graphics and a greater scope (since it's two worlds, of M&M4 and M&M5 -- kinda like Tale of Two Wastelands for nu-Fallout games), also it concludes an entire epic saga of chasing a certain spacenigger.

Really, though, anything from 3-8 is easily playable and palatable to any RPG player. Any.

MM6 is more hardcore than MM7 and MM8
Basically the dungeons are much bigger, but more "boring", I think there is more content but it also looks more raw, less polished

I found 3 so boringly easy I didn't even bother with the sequels.
1 was a lot more to my liking.

6 has the best soundtrack in any game that's why it's the best.

My favorites are 6, 7, and 8.
9 is shit.

The point is, M&M3-4-5 are popcorn dungeon crawlers. Everything is easily managed, you're not anally punished for every mistake, and if you're just a starter to the (retro) RPG genre, it has just enough stuff to keep you alert and on your toes (aging, eradication, etc.).

Plus, the exploration is fun.

M&M1 and 2 are okay too, just not as accessible - no automap and such - and also they have those hella gay 25964396 orc god encounters.

Only 1 has no map and only 2 those huge encounters.
