ITT: We post games that may have been popular, but never had much of a legacy. This definitely comes to mind. To this day, I still think this game is better known for all the clones it spawned rather than any significant sequels it may have had.

Only in US. Japan went nuts for Xevious.
It is one of Namco's best games.

Never liked Xevious. It lacks the challenge of other shmups, it lacks the graphics and sound of future shmups, and it doesn't have the charm of early single screen shmups.

Innovative as it may have been, as a game itself I never really liked it. If it didn't have the Nazca lines or the mother ship every once in a while it would be entirely forgettable.

Prior to xevious, you basically had space invaders. It was a big step forward. It was also doing the starfox aesthetic which gets built upon in the follow in games.

We had this in a local arcade. When you whacked the coin panel hard enough it would give free credits. Good times.

You had Galaga man and Galaga is way more fun to me than Xevious.

Xevious is bad ass, especially since your performance can easily influence what enemies appear and how soon. I like it much more than the single screen ones, well maybe outside of Satan's Hollow.

I hated how the enemies were mostly just circles and squares.

Especially the invincible rotating squares. Seemed kinda stupid.

Of course they are going to be circles and squares. What would a flying saucer look from the top view? It would look like a circle, and if they wanted more edge in combat they went for the square.

Not all of them were flying saucers though. Some were just like black or silver balls or something.

I mean, there are ships and tanks too but it's mostly just balls.

Few people, at least in the west, seem to enjoy Xevious. I always see people saying they don't like it.

I played it a lot of hours and had fun with it, and for a 1982 shmup it is impressive.
Besides the fact it was the first shooting game with bi-plane shooting, with a boss fight, etc it was also the first with a plot, and the plot is actually a nifty sci-fi one. I'm sure in Japan there's novels about it.

This is true about most gen 1 and 2 games. Very few got sequels post-NES.

Robotrek could've been a real big hit, like Earthbound, but it was marketed as a generic, dark scifi game.

>> No.2886830

Xevious is very fun, and I'm hard-pressed to recall any shooters that were able to compete with it back in early '83. Maybe Sega's Tac/Scan for its vector graphics and formation-based shooting?

>>2886406
Phoenix and Vanguard both had boss fights before Xevious, among others. And Xevious has more lore than plot, which is a distinct innovation. Of course Xevious was novelized, Namco knew they had a big hit and quickly pumped out the merchandise—Endo's next game, Tower of Druaga, leaned even more on that.

Sounds like Atari made a cheap upright cab and called Xevious a day. I hope to play the game on that or a cocktail someday.
