It was the right decision, even by the time Banjo came out there were very few legit 3D platformers that weren't isometric, 2.5D or whatever. Beta Banjo actually reminds me a lot of Crash Bandicoot with its side-view.

Great video though, was really cool to see the progression and Banjo being 90s as fuck with his cap and skateboarding moves. The graphics on the SNES Dream are pretty insane, the real-time shadows and massive sprites especially.

Had they not changed direction the whole project would've been thrown in the shitter, I imagine. Look at what happened to Sonic X-Treme with its weird fish-eye shit - Pre-Mario 64 experimentation and its flaws are really interesting but early Banjo Kazooie looks pretty damn playable for the time.

BK starting out as an RPG certainly explains the relatively simplistic platforming and the more borong, touch-letters-in-the-right-order puzzles (yeah, DK had them, too, but at least it had an element of speed and timing).

Truth be told, I'd have appreciated to the 2 1/2d look. Reminds me of Goemon's Great Advemture, and more games in that vein would've been nice. Copying Mario 64 didn't really work out - BK has fantastic characterisation, sense of humour, and looks, vastly superior to what SM 64 has to offer in this regard, but the actual gameplay, the platforming... M64 dominates.

Something DKCesque would've been preferable. Then again, given the RPG roots... Maybe a less ambitious RPG project instead of trying to shoehorn in the platforming instead.

Okay, first world problems, I suppose. BK is a fun game, after all. But trying something other than copying M64. Might've been good for it regardless.

Incidentally. Others have already noted the similarities of the early development stages to Crash Bandicoot. The even earlier stage of action adventure with boy and dog strongly reminds me of. Secret of Evermore - and I suspect that some of the ideas Rare had there eventually found their way into Jet Force Gemini.

Gameplay-wise, Mario 64 only "dominates" in terms of the character moveset. Almost everything else I believe B-K does much better.

In terms of platforming I believe they're rather similar; Mario 64's sense of platforming is a lot more simplistic compared to its predecessors, especially the likes of Mario 3.

>But trying something other than copying M64. Might've been good for it regardless.
I don't think so. Judging by the end product I think what we got as is was fine. Anyways, I don't see how it "copied" Mario 64 more than expanding and improving on its formula in some ways.

Why are in-development concepts and cut content ideas from Rare considered as so mythical and legendary compared to that of other companies? Yeah. Even though I do prefer B-K personally, I gotta say that there's still a lot of merit in Mario 64; for example the overall physics (like you said) which helps with the overall energetic execution of his moveset, and most of the course design being pretty well done.

I guess it's a mix of just how much we know about the content, how elaborate and creative the cut stuff was (like Stop 'n' Swop - a feature that until then was almost unheard of, afaik) and since traces of it could still be found in the games, so there was more to discuss and speculate.

The Stampers intentionally made them very mysterious, never did interviews, only allowed interviews rarely (sorry) and only with magazines they liked, like Britains N64 Magazine. Most people were put through NOA. They even did things like DNA encoded swipe cards and CCTV on site constantly because it increased the myth of Rare and what secret projects they were up to. And it always had rumors and mystery around it to the point where it would become running jokes like KI3, Banjo Threeie and Mire Mare (For the real oldfags among us)

They built up a legend and deservedly got remembered for that. The difference is that most Japanese and western companies don't have the assets to hand. They didn't know how valuable the assets were while Rare insisted on keeping the Post-it notes from their level design. And we're getting all this amazing historical footage because of it.

People have tracked every fucking little version of it as they've been found, just scourging and nitpicking, finding all sorts of shit. It probably all started because, like Banjo Kazooie, a lot of people like the game, and there were elements from promotional material that got cut, which turned into "my dad works at Nintendo and you can get it if you move the truck" style rumors and mockups like OoT's classic "you can get the Triforce as an equipable item" famous rumor. And some neat stuff has been found, even little things like Dark Link having a functional AI response to an item you shouldn't have, to a fickin' Star Fox ship as a complete and functional enemy that just never appears in game.
