Post some 10/10 retro videogames.

>> No.2867682

I've never played a 10/10 video game.

Terranigma is an 8.5 though.

While I don't think it's great, I like Terranigma a great deal and I think it's the only game I've never seen anyone ever say anything bad about without also praising the game. As such, I believe it may very well be the most perfect game ever made, but it's not 10/10.

I quit Terranigma halfway through the ice world because it just felt like more of the same old grind. Find a new location, talk to a couple NPCs, buy the next location's wave of party items, kill a bunch of enemies, flip a few switches, fight a boss, Save The Planet(tm), find a new location, etc. Does the gameplay ever change?

Player items I mean, my bad. I just had the basic JRPG trope stuck in my head; e.g. the Secret of Mana games, every new town has a new shopkeeper with one new weapon for each specific party. I.e. not the slightest bit of customization, basically a level-up where leveling up only serves to make you at constant parity with linearly strengthening enemies.

Something being 10/10 is synonymous with it being perfect. Does perfection truly exist or is it just an unattainable ideal? I'd say the latter. Rating a game out of ten is a subjective thing. There's no truly objective way to quantify how good a game is. It's a matter of opinion. But for something to be perfect, it needs to be literally without any flaws whatsoever. I have to wonder if any of us can say that about our most beloved games. We can't even say that about our most beloved people in our lives. Perfection is saved for metaphysical characters like god. Have you ever played a game so good that you felt like it was made by an omniscient deity?

It's not. 10/10 it's simply the best score a game can get, of course subjectively. Perfection doesn't have anything to do with it.

I think I must have asked once on /vr/ what the Dark Souls of the 16 -bit consoles was and someone said this and it makes sense because this is hard as fuck

I love Terranigma, I can always replay it, but it kinda falls from grace after humanity is resucitated, just after the infamous Queen boss fight. I can't remember anything notable after that. I never get tired of this game. My only complaint about this otherwise perfect game is that the Second Quest is essentially pointless. Would have been nice if Nintendo had rearranged the palace layouts, or maybe increased enemy stats.

Battle of Olympus was also nice, although it lacked Zelda II's RPG elements.

It doesn't affect the experience for me, and you fight less in Ultima IV that in a generic Jrpg so..

Ultima IV is not about the combat; Is about immerse yourself in a world, Britania,
becomes the avatar, how your actions affect the virtues.

Ultima V isn't about becomes the avatar, is about defeat a villain and the 8 virtues are replaced with a only a one "karma" meter.

good game Ultima V anyway.

I understand this point of view, and perhaps there's no agreeing whether the 10/10 rating should be reserved only for an unattainable level of perfection. However, an argument against that is that it messes up the rating scale. If you're going by gradients of 1, and assuming 0 is a score, then you have an 11-point scale where 5 is average, 6-10 (5 rating levels) is above average, and 0-4 (5 rating levels) is below average. Making 10/10 implicitly unavailable for mortal games means that all the best games simply receive 9/10s, and so you've lost whatever distinction there might've been between 9s and 10s. The balance is also now messed up, since now the scale is effectively 0-9, with an arithmetic mean of 4.5. I guess you could remove 0 to rebalance it (or reclassify 0 so that it's unattainably awful, like the converse of what you're doing with the 10), and so essentially the workable space is now 1-9 (a 9-point scale: loss of detail from the 11-point scale). But Ah!, 9 is the best rating now? But shouldn't we make 9 unattainable, and the greatest games should only receive 8s? And so the effective scale becomes 2-8.

You might try to use a half-point scale, so that the best games are 9.5, with 10 being unattainable. Here you have the same issue, though, as you lose any distinction you might've had between 9.5 and 10. Any games that would've been 9.5 on a 10-point scale would need to receive 9s now, to distinguish them from the better 9.5s.

If you're using a 101-point scale of {0%, 1%, 2%, ..., 100%} then I could see never using 100% since there's so much extra detail and ways to distinguish various 9s (now 90%, 91%, 92%, etc.), and that would be alright I suppose.

CT was an all around solid game, it was certainly not perfect but it didn't have any particularly outstanding flaws to it, most games that beat CT in one aspect likely don't beat it in all.

Agreed. Memorization is not a criticism of this beautiful, quirky jazz solo of a game.

battletoads is almost kaizo in its difficulty, but it's an excellent game. I hadn't thought of it like a jazz solo, but it is. I liked how the gameplay kept changing around so that it was never repetitive.

they were involved with the SNES port of lemmings, too.

People who think 10/10 means objective perfection are retarded, why would anyone ever give anything a 10/10 in that case? Why would you reserve a score on your system for something that doesn't exist and never will?

10/10 doesn't mean perfect imo, it means the best.

It sounds like you're talking about the fucking prologue.

I completely agree.
Treasure had this magical kind of, core gameplay ethos when making it.
"Give the player all the tools to be completely untouchable"
"Then make it hard as balls"

Why the fuck can't they be bothered to make a new, standalone Yoshi game for handhelds?

It's just a rehash of Yoshi's Island over and over and over and over... And over...

OP, if you think Terranigma (or indeed any of the Soulblazer Trilogy) is 10/10 your taste in games sucks dick hard. All three are poorly translated excuse-plot grindfests.

Congratulations, you just found out why fixed ratings are utterly useless for reviews. You can not ever use the highest or lowest value, because once you do, anything better or worse that may later show up gets the same rating, eliminating their difference.
That's why good reviews do not use a rating at all; and why good aggregators stick to a simple yes/no, instead of a scale.

An alternative to fixed ratings, if you insist on rating, would be a ranking, where you can say for any game "is better than" or "is worse than". A good way to establish such a ranking is the Elo rating system, where you only compare games directly against each other.

Eklemata, after you cross Indus.
If you're gonna stretch it, the prologue is the restoration of the continents, not more. Between that and Indus there's all of Santuario and Zue.

I got to agree that it was one of the weaker points of the story, where it got a bit grindy and stale. The game picked me up just fine a bit later though, and to this day it's the only SNES action RPG I actually played to the very end.

The Queen of Spain is the only place in this game where it gets a bit grindy, because she's for some reason way too strong for the level you reach her with. For everything else in the game, simple curiousity is enough to keep you scaling along nicely.
