Previous thread - >>2842270

This thread is for the spirited discussion of CRT displays - Televisions, monitors and projectors used for the playing of retro games!

>Try to keep it /vr/-related: Nothing past 5th gen(+Dreamcast). Slight OT might be okay if related to CRTs (E.G. 16:9 compatible models, flatscreens, etc.) Systems with backwards compatibility are also pretty safe territory, assuming you're focusing on the older games. PC CRTs are also a-ok.
>Produce OC! Get out your real cameras and take beautiful pictures of your CRTs displaying recognizable characters with the kind of beautiful accuracy that brings tears to the eyes of young and old alike! If you take 100 photos, at least one of them will turn out alright! (maybe)
>Try to be as detailed as possible when asking info on a specific model. As always, google is your friend, and we are your friends with benefits. Older archived threads aren't a bad place to look either.
>Share appreciation for others choice of technology and personal philosophy of gaming. As always show courtesy in your discussion and moderate yourselves first.

Discussion of video processing and scaling devices is okay, but try to keep the focus on CRTs and CRT accessories

Sadly, no, it cannot.

Technically, if you were able to design a controller board for the tube and remove the entire computer from it, sure. But that's a lot of work and I can't claim to know how to do it.

>Blur is roughly constant per unit screen area. Bigger pixels means less blur per pixel. Smaller pixels mean more blur per pixel. Line doubling means pixels 4 times as big as the smallest pixels the display is designed for, so of course they will be sharp. Which is what mode 13h games looked like.

What do you guys make of this post? The argument here is: how line doubling in 13h DOS games using a VGA monitor prevented dithering from being blurred into a solid tint.

I didn't even know what PVM I was getting until I arrived at the place I picked it up. It's a nice monitor and I wouldn't trade it because it's awesome, but using a separate VGA monitor is a fine alternative.

Despite the beauty of the shadow mask itself, I can tell you're using either NESRGB with a horrible palette setting, or a playchoice-10 PPU. That palette is really, really bad if you're going for authenticity. For comparison, here's native composite video.

>>2855396
Yeah, stay away from the rubber cup on the picture tube and the flyback transformer on the PCB below that the wire runs to. Reach around it, not over it.

Don't hold something metal with your free hand while poking inside the set or you're grounding yourself and electricity could go in one arm, through your heart, and out the other.

My 20M4U has a built in speaker. It's decent, and convenient, but I can't imagine actually using it exclusively, especially when it's so cheap/easy to get an old stereo receiver and a set of nice bookshelf speakers on craigslist or ebay and make it sound 1000 times better. Granted, some people might not have the room for that, or even care about sound, but it seems odd to me to care so much about the graphics to hunt down a PVM, but not give a shit about the sound.

I leave it in manual mode, and just switch stuff around until it looks decent.
f/stop varies by what I'm doing, ISO is anywhere from |80| to 400 depending on the shot, shutter usually stays at either 30 or 60 with 60 being preferable.
Most stuff is taken with the white balance set to the color temp option set to 9300k.
Videos tend to follow the same, with f/stop being set a bit higher than it would for the equivalent photo, and ISO usually being 400 or 800.

I agree, but appreciation of this sort of visual fidelity is already such an acquired taste. My friends are baffled as to why I keep a big, heavy CRT around. They are entirely oblivious to the fact that old consoles actually do look good if you display them in their native resolution. Most of them tried hooking their SNES or N64 up to their flatscreens with composite and said "Jeez, I forgot how shitty these old games looked".

But anyway, yeah. All my friends upgraded to HD/flatscreen TVs long before I did. They probably thought I was just jealous, but the first thing I noticed on ALL of them was that they sounded terrible. I didn't see the purpose of spending 800 bucks on a flat screen to get your crisp, 1080p image, but have a sound system made out of drive-thru speakers.

I'm not knocking his ability to re-foam a woofer; shit has always looked like a pain in the ass and I would be hard pressed to do so myself and not just replace the damn things outright, so good for him, seriously. But you don't sit there and talk to me about 'ruining the sound' when he's already not accounting for the fact that his other cracked surrounds are compromising the box (these things don't appear to be ported and nothing I can find about the mids suggest they are individually sealed) not to mention the status of the likely old, dry caps in the crossover network and the old, likely oxidised and poorly functioning L-pads on the front. My speakers looked gorgeous but they honestly sounded like shit until I got up the nerve to rip them apart and replace/recondition/restuff all the ~40 year old internals.

The transcoder I have im not a huge fan of and any decent ones are pretty pricey. And trying to find a simple no settings straight transcoder that isnt discontinued seems all but impossible. If you don't mind me asking, what transcoder do you currently have?

The Key Digital KD-CTCA3 I bought a few weeks back seems to work wonderfully, and is |JUST| a transcoder. The only user controllable things on it are a few dip switches for switching between how you want your sync information to come out.

I can't speak directly on the quality of it, but I see an auction on ebay right now for it's predecessor, the KD-CTCA2. Admittedly, it doesn't have a power supply and requires a bit more manual adjustment for different resolutions, but you can't argue too much for $14 shipped; And that's if they don't accept a best offer.

The Megaview did need me to manually adjust the vertical size to play well with 720p/1080i, but once that was done, it looked absolutely wonderful. Standard 4:3 480p didn't need any real adjustments at all >>2855691

Only things worth doing on the internet are getting mad about stupid shit and fapping. Anyway, I went with Parts-Express when I bought up all my stuff. They do have a mix of expensive audiophile bullshit and cheap serviceable components, so do some homework about what you're trying to do before you commit to anything. As for replacing individual components, you're likely not going to need/want to swap out components on basic 2/3-way speakers that come with a receiver unless you're particularly attached to the look, or the other internals are known to be of good quality. You'd probably be better off building a new set from scratch or a kit, or just buying one of their generic bookshelf sets. Most pre-built speakers that aren't expensive brand-names or separately-sold monsters like his or mine have little to no crossover networks to speak of; usually just a single capacitor between the mid/woofer and tweeter. It isn't to say they're necessarily shit, but they could definitely be engineered better and it may not be worth the time/effort/money to fix them up.

tl;dr literally almost any alternative audio solution is better than built in speakers in TVs/PVMs/Monitors and what you already have is probably perfectly serviceable unless it's actually fucked, but check out that site if you really want look around. And do some reading on speaker theory.

>Yeah my worry is with a straight transcoder the monitor may not like a 16:9 480/720/1080p signal.
I will say, 1080p does do some weird shit with both the Megaview and my Sony PC CRT; I can't get the latter to accept it properly, and you get some really strange shit going on at the refresh it will accept it at ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tfY5DKt2hps ) and while the former will technically sync and display a 1080p signal, it sure as hell doesn't like it, and you get wild artifacting all over the place along with the image being dark and distorted.
I haven't had a chance to try 1440x1080, so it may just be a problem with the horizontal resolution.
1280x720 is fine on both monitors, aside from getting the aspect ratio right.
I honestly can't remember if the Splatoon (and Wind Waker HD) photos I took were of it running in 720p or 1080i, but both looked absolutely fine on it.

Did some fucking around with the Gamecube, which the monitor saw as a 640x480 signal. I put a bit of video together, but it'll be a little while before it's processed and all that: https://youtu.be/UiY60QotxMU

Might move the PS3 over and try messing around with it in a bit to see how it handles 720p/1080i (and maybe p).

There are people out there who don't like the concept of permanently damaging their console's shell (a finite resource, mind you) to add additional video outputs that already exist on the multi-out connectors.

Also, the obvious not everyone who gets into RGB owns a soldering iron. Maybe they should as far as modding goes but that's just my opinionated conjecture. Not to be rude with my imitation of your sarcastic tone at the top but it's quite annoying seeing it in every single thread.

If you are making SCART cables instead of buying the stupidly priced pre-made ones by recycling the old multi-out plugs, I don't take too much issue with it. I've seen two different Sony models compared to it. And I know it will have liquid spill protection covers on it because it was specific to hospitals, but I'm more curious about the other details.

rotate the deflection yoke. It's gonna be tedious and painful. I'd just stomach it if you can.

If not, I've done the deflection yoke rotation before. It does work, but it's difficult to realign it properly for convergence. Anyone can do it, but it's quite a long process.

I'd use RCA and then just pop some BNC adapters on the back of the PVM. Alternately, I guess one could always just put BNC jacks on the back of a console. Those are pretty big though.

Just gonna make sure. This is a PAL wii, right?

NTSC wii's only output YPbPr component.

Also, if you are NTSC:

If you're in PAL land, ignore that as me being an asshole. Your TV's support SCART so I hope you can make it work.

11th time's the charm, you know. But seriously, if you have BNC use it instead of RCA. BNC cables aren't that expensive either. Maybe a little more than generic RCA but at least you're getting coaxial shielding, which is uncommon for RCA cables and which i had to hunt for.

Hi /vr/

My crt that I used for a hacked wii and a hacked ps2 (I played NES, SNES, PC-Engine, Genesis and PS1 games on them) is broken..
I had it for 15 years.

I am very scared of buying a new crt because of how old they are, as in, repairing them could be more expensive than buying them.

I have a modern PC Monitor that accepts component inputs, but it would stretch the games to 1080p.
And in that case, I think it would be better to just emulate the games on pc with filters and sell my Wii and PS2.

Is buying a PC CRT monitor a good option? 480p isnt that bad for old retro games, and at least I would get PS2, Gamecube and Wii games in their native resolution.
Do you know what I can use to connect component cables to a crt monitor that only accepts VGA?

If you dont want to buy an expensive rgb monitor you can get a pc CRT that usually only do 31khz aka, 480p, and something that converts component to VGA and get some speakers. Do not sell your consoles and games.

As someone who used to emulate wii gc and ps2 games on their high end pc, the ever so often frame rate drop was not really worth it. I've recently collected a few CRTs and component cables for all the systems and any day of the week id pick using the actual hardware over emulating in upscaled 1080p or highter.

It's black & white only, like most viewfinders, but I reckon it's about 300-400TVL - not bad for a 1cm-wide CRT :)

I saw some instructables about doing it, but those all seem to say you can just plug composite video into a single pin somewhere, but this one was a little more complicated, and needed the levels altered slightly and separate sync.

I'm still having some trouble with the image. The very brightest whites appear black, like i'm getting some sort of crush. The diode helped with that, but hasn't fixed the problem entirely. I'm open to ideas if anyone has some?

Usually termination is done inside the console and television for BNC. If you REALLY don't want to mod your consoles (adding a 75 ohm resistor between the R/G/B channels and ground), then you need to put a box on your cable somewhere to do it. So are HD CRTs worthless? My local thrift store has three 16:9 TVs, two with HDMI and one without. The nicest one seems to be a Trinitron KV-HS420, does anyone know how much input lag there is on this model? I have an SD Trini for 240p already, but I'd like to try out some stuff in 480p and widescreen (Smash, F-Zero GX). I've also read you can turn off the digital scaling with the service menu, is this true? How will my PS3 perform? I don't really have any HD content to watch, only looking to game.

2-3 frames for 240p/480i content, when put up against one of my PVMs.
That was with my older camera. I might take the Wii up stairs in a bit and take a photo or two with the RX100 to see if I can get a more spot on number.

Only why you're going to get 240p/480i and 480p over the same Dreamcast cable is if you've got a switch to change which pins are being grounded and even then you'd need a way to get horizontal and vertical sync for the latter, which SCART would have no way to carry.

Well, in a case like this and phrasing like that, there really is only one way to take that.

SCART implies either composite or RGB; Since you're not going to find any game that won't run via composite, it's obviously not that.
They didn't say VGA, so it's not 480p RGB.

NTSC composite or S-Video will likely not work, 60hz shouldn't be a issue unless you get something from 80s or older.
With component you could get very decent picture but you may need to convert that to SCART RGB or you get a CRT with component inputs/support.

You can achieve very low lag (0.25-0.50 frames) if you use the HDMI adapter and you use one of the low response time gaming monitors like the BENQ/ASUS, but this cost like 200-300+ dollars.

A best alternative to those are SD Trinitrons
(https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FD_Trinitron/WEGA).). The advantage to these is that they were consumer models so they are readily available freely/cheaply and people literally throw them out.

In the WEGA Trinitrons, any models that are 'Hi-Scan'/HDMI/DVI you DO NOT want. No for a number of reasons:

a) Its big an heavy as fuck, larger than it looks in the photo and no one wants to lift that. I can assure you that you don't want to have it on your place. A 40" CRT will weigh in excess of 300-350+ lbs.

b) Large CRTs generally require more maintenence and have more geometry problems with their display because they are so large. Plus, this picture won't look as sharp compared to a smaller display. It won't look as crisp as something smaller.

c) Look at the wikipedia I linked above, there are no 40" standard-definition WEGAs, meaning it is an HDTV unit and it will lag. It is not appropriate for playing 240p/480i consoles on.

>and you use one of the low response time gaming monitors like the BENQ/ASUS, but this cost like 200-300+ dollars.
ASUS VH238H for $155 on amazon right now.
DisplayLag puts it at 11ms, so under 1 frame of delay.
There's even an older model (VE228H) for under $130; No idea how that one actually looks though.

http://www.mediafire.com/download/dkgax7w5ocoth10 for a more complete manual, but for slightly newer models of the same line.
http://www.mediafire.com/download/t026a2083xz14d3 for one specific to that model, but only really seems to have service menu information and schematics.

Well, the BENQ ones are still better and they are a lot more expensive in parts of the world that aren't USA.
