Hey /vr/, I just played through this and I absolutely loved it. I never played anything like it

Training characters to eventually turn them into a crafting currency, pretty much everything being optional, challenging platforming and puzzles in the hard mode dungeons, COOL AS FUCK BATTLE SYSTEM

The battle system really is deceptively simple, but actually practicing and timing your juggles out and maximizing damage is such a huge benefit. I really like how skillfully timing your moves gives more exp than just button mashing.

Anyone else play this? Whadja think about it?

I don't know shit about these games beyond that Yoh & Kou Yoshinari did art for them but your description got me interested. I'm generally interested in JRPGs with fun gameplay that aren't entirely driven by things that other genres do better.

Every time someone says "this game has bad gameplay but look past that and enjoy the story" I fucking tune out and yet every time someone praises the gameplay in a JRPG I get interested.

>>2835125
Ha, I'd actually say it's pretty opposite of that. Almost all of the story and cutscenes come in what are essentially short stories of how characters end up dying.

It almost feels like a semi open world dungeon crawler or something. Very few of the areas you go to are really related to the story

Combat is kinda like xenogears, but each button represents a party member and everyone can attack at once. The skillful part of it comes from timing your attacks just right so you can juggle the enemy which causes them to drop gems that give percentage exp increase at the end of the encounter.

The game as a whole just feels so unique

I don't want to sound like an hysterical fanboy but this is probably the best RPG i ever played.
The gameplay is indeed complex enough to reward your good management with efficiency in battle, and simple enough not to lost you or bore you. Also, in a JRPG way, there is always skills and combo you can miss on your first playthrough.
The story is fantastic, dramatic in it's own very particular way. It feels more like a play than a movie.
Dungeon exploration is fun as fuck, challenging but not dumb-hard (except for that ONE hard mode dungeon).
Every character is really unique and has a taste, so you develop a clear bond with some and others you will reallydislike and get rid of in joy (which means even if you don't like them, they "exist", there is no" meh" boring characters).
Everything is correctly fitting the Northern Mythology theme, the world is filled with details and stories. In my last playthrough is delved into the stories of your Einjenhar fighting the ragnarok after you send them up, and was amazed by the content these japs wrote just for players like me who just want to read stories ! Who does that nowadays ?

And don't frown on Valkyries Profile 2 : it is REALLY different, its gameplay is more complex and subtle, but it's a great game. Not on par with the first, but still better than many many games.

VP is probably Tri-Ace's Magnum Opus, there's really nothing else one should say about it.

There's nothing I could say against the game, even the terrible american VA was so bad it was actually good, and even then I like some characters more in the american VA, like Lorenta. It had everything you'd want from a JRPG, new, actually innovating and original mechanics, a large cast of characters with a lot of charm, decent story, good music, good dungeons, great graphics and non linearity too.

It's really a 10/10 game that hasn't lost any potential even today, far better than most other big name RPGs back then.

The second one is brillant, but you must not expect a "Valkyrie Profile 1 : 2". It's a different game, with a different feeling and construction.

It was fun the first time though, it really set the mood of Lenneth's role. But on replays I could see it getting old, and VP is a game that lends itself to multiple plays. It's probably best to keep a save that begins at the first dungeon, or maybe even after it since it's super tutorial-y.

first, look up how to get the 'a' ending if you want a satisfying end to the story. then other endings are very very underwhelming and the game basically tells you there's a secret ending at the end and you should try to see it. it's retardedly hidden, so i really suggest looking up how to get it

the game doesn't really tell you how to do a lot of shit, but it basically works like this

the way you get items is either by finding them or creating them

you can create items like weapons, armor, and potions from the menu under 'divine item'. divining items costs 'materialization points' or mp. materialization points are given to you at the end of a chapter and are based on what character(s) you transferred during the chapter

you transfer characters from the menu as well. transferring a character makes that character unavailible till the end of the game. you'll get instructions on what kind of stats you should give to a character you transfer at the start of a new chapter.

when a character levels up you get a standard boost in some stats like strength and intelligence and hp and you also get 'capacity points' or cp. you spend cp under the skills section in the menu. you can also spend cp to level up 'traits' which raises a characters 'hero value' which affects the number of mp you get when you transfer a char.

also you can change the order of attacks a char uses under the ability section in the menu. this is also how you select different spells for magic users.

there's other mechanics n shit in the game too but these are the ones that i didn't immediately understand on my first playthrough

VP's translation is pretty weird, on one hand they got lots of strange things like the spell chants right, on the other hand they added or changed a lot of stuff of the original script and even battle clips, Badrach being the worst offender due to not only having a bad translation in general but also being targeted by censorship due to some of his victory lines mentioning cigarettes. Yes. If you pay attention to sending up two good heroes each chapter early on, it is literally, or almost literally, impossible to run out of Evaluation. Even treasures you dislike can be turned into points. Other treasures can be converted into better items even if they seem useless in their initial state.

>since why would you suddenly care about someone that when you were given the chance to run away with them, you instead chose to let yourself get poisoned to death

wasn´t this the intro scene? if i recall correctly Lenneth was chained to live a tragic life every time she was not a valkyrie.

She dies in the intro scene when running away as a child with Lucian, giving up while Lucian gets away. But when she gets her memories back later, she is madly in love with the dork. I know a JRPG means that there has to be some kind of romance storyline for the main character, but even Lezard was a good match compared to Lucian.

>she regained her memories

He was the only one who cared for her, also she got all the feelings she got as human and knew how sad the souls she collects really are, i think the whole story revolves around that theme man, also it was lucian who trigger all that by never forgeting about her

>he is a dork

Yeah, i agree, even then i think that pair is great

I just personally didn't like the way it developed. When it comes to RPGs, I'm more on the side of, "if you aren't going to spend time developing the relationship, don't include the romance".

No money now.

As much as I like Lezard, I don't think he needs to be that major in the next game since he was the man in the 2nd game.
