Do you think that a game released 25 years ago is, in any way comparable to an indie game that was released this year?

Of course. They're both games. All games are compatible because they're all games.

Undertale is at 47% atm. I think Tumblr is awoken or something. Dont really have any other idea why this is so close.

/utg/ partially.

Super Mario World isn't as good as 3 anyway.

what this guy said >>2828306
you can compare them on some level because their games. The only thing really possibly preventing you from comparing them is that one is an RPG and another is a platformer, but age definitely doesn't matter.

SMW is better anyway, undertale is cancer

Is earthbound cancerous too? Besides, it's the fanbase that's the problem

Fuck you, I can even compare salad to a game.

Like, I enjoy a salad more than most retro games.

it's hardly fair. SMW was released by a big name developer, when that technology was current. Undertale was probably whipped together by some guys in their basement

Funnily enough, it was.

That technology was current 25 years ago. If anything it's unfair towards SMW

That's a terrible comparison and you know it. I've never even heard of Undertale, but it's clearly a game. Of course comparing them is fair.

The other thing I don't get is why /vr/ is so hostile towards independent games. Many of the games we love and praise are essentially exactly that, just from an earlier era.

Many people will say that most indie games are shit, which is certainly true. But many classic era console and PC games are also shit. "Indie game" is just another word for game.

They're inferior knockoffs of the games you're allowed to talk about on /vr/.

it's a special brand of hipster-ism.

I like Undertale more than World too and I don't even like Undertale that much

Okay? But that's not a /vr/ poll. I don't even know where it's from, but that doesn't matter.

Mostly because a lot of indie games now are extremely lazily made and try to justify either incompetence or laziness by saying it's an artistic choice, and they think that shields them from any criticism.

It's like, I understand you didn't have the money to hire a better artist. Just say you did the best you can. Don't try to spin it and say it's some deep artistic thing.

A lot of indie devs have gigantic egos, thinking that pretty much every person that plays games is obligated to play and like their game, and some even think that they should be government funded so they don't have to worry about having to make good games that appeal to people.

It's true, there are good games and shit games in every category, it's just that the asshole indie devs are extremely vocal.

All that said, Undertale is somewhat of an exception. It's actually pretty decent. Certainly a lot better than the RPG Maker games that some folks try to sell. It's mostly the fan following that's awful and should be avoided at all costs.

There's also a fair amount of evidence showing how much effort's been put into Undertale, between all of the varying interactions with characters, abusing the save/load system and having the cast react appropriately to it, a shitload of foresight on the overworld stuff, and of course the music.

Shit's impressive for what it is. It certainly isn't the best game ever though

That'd go to Bionic Commando.
