the first time I played I actually killed some monsters at the start before I stopped having had no real preconceptions about the game since I ignore all conversations and media about things I plan on playing, and I actually find that that's the best way to play it, to simply play it without any goal until one arises out of the experience of playing itself.

if I had watched lets plays or read about the game mechanics or the ending conditions or anything like that it would have undoubtedly cheapened the experience for me

anyway my point is maybe you shouldn't recommend games you like to other people if you don't know how

Not modern day but Tengai Makyo The Apocalypse 4 takes place in like 1892 and has some current day sections, very unique setting for an RPG.
