I got introduced not too long ago, having been raised on Final Fantasy. I think I prefer the series a bit more than FF. That said sometimes the humor feels slightly out of place, but I mostly blame cultural stuff for that.

Have played 1-5, and 9. Could never beat 2 though, got way too repetitive and while I enjoy free roam I would've liked SOME direction. 5 may be one of my favorite RPGs of all time though. Same with 9.

People throw the word "comfy" around a lot on this board. But the DQ8 games are actually, genuinely comfy for the most part. They have their intense moments, and players can certainly get mad/frustrated at certain bosses or other bullshit situations; but more often than not, they're just pleasant to play through.

>> No.2814502

Just played through the first eight games for the first time this year. SFC versions of I-III, PSX for IV, PS2 for V, DS for VI, 3DS for VII and VIII.

I rather enjoyed the games for the most part. I was honestly nothing special to me, but I imagine I'll enjoy it more now that I'm a fan of the series. II was alright and had some nice improvements, but it was damn cryptic at times. III is what really pulled me into the series, it was great fun all around.

IV was great. Looking forward to another playthrough with female Hero just because and so I can actually use party chat, I kept forgetting about it and didn't use it much. I mostly just remember Manya bitching about caves and Burai complaining about Alena being a hard-head. DQ V was great even though I prefer traditional set party members to catching monsters. DQ VI bored me to tears.

DQ VII was long as fuck but enjoyable. I really liked VII, it's easily one of my favorites.Glad to hear that the 3DS versions of it and VII are getting localized so more people can play them.

I've tried getting into IX a few times but I just can't do it, it just bores me for some reason. Being knocked back down to level 1 and exp being scaled doesn't curry any favor to me either. Not playing X because I don't want to pay the month fee on top of a VPN monthly fee and I'm not much interested in MMOs anyway. Looking forward to XI though.

>> No.2814508

>That said sometimes the humor feels slightly out of place

That's probably the localizations fault. I've never played any Dragon Quests in English but I've watched some videos on many of the games and it seems they often insert humor where there wasn't any before. The localizations in general are pretty awful from what I've see actually, at least the DS games.

All of the NES games have been remade, and I can't vouch for all of them, but I can confirm that the first two at least are very playable and actually a lot of fun.

If you're a pirate fag, there's a Super Famicom version of Dragon Quest 1 & 2 (collection pack) that has had the grinding and bullshit toned down considerably, and an english patch to go with it.

If you wanna be legit-as-shit™, there's also the Game Boy Color versions of Dragon Warrior 1 & 2, not too hard to find, and they're basically ports of the Super Famicom remakes.

Hell yeah. My definitive childhood game. Replayed it earlier this year emulated on my PSP. Gonna start a new file with the All Monsters hack just so I can get a Dimensaur.

Sucks it never took off in the West and was generally considered a Pokemon knockoff (which it is, but getting into technicalities, DQ5 started monster-raising and battling years prior to Pokemon).

Still crossing my fingers on the 3DS remakes getting localized.

I'm playing III right now, what are some recommended job changes for a mage and a cleric? I have a fighter which I'm going to turn into a Sage aside from those two.
Also, will one job change make my party strong enough to beat Divinegon and get the best reawrd?

>> No.2828607

>>2828486
One job change could be enough. However that's dependent on level and stats. Every class change in III sets levels back down to 1 and halves a character's stats. So, if you're wanting a cleric/mage to go physical, learn all their spell lists first and let them accumulate some MP and INT so their spells stay useful. Also, if you're playing SFC/GBC, go Thief for your mage's class change. Speed, and actual MP growth being the reasons.

>> No.2829013

>>2828607
Thanks, levels shouldn't be a problem, because I'm a few hours away from facing Zoma, and my party is in the 40s, and stat gains are practically nothing at this point.
Then I guess I'll take your advice on the Mage-->Thief and turn the Cleric into a Warrior or Fighter.

>> No.2829027

What is everyone's opinion on the series from a technical/balance viewpoint? What I've noticed from playing a few at this point is that there seems to be almost no "game breaking" bugs/glitches/workarounds/cheats, or at least I never see discussions of such compared to other games, especially other rpgs.

>> No.2829753

>>2829027
The beauty of DQ for me is exactly that. I can't pick out any particular instance of dumb glitchiness or otherwise insurmountable bullshit. Sometimes allied AI is not terribly useful (Cristo in DWIV NES), but beyond that, everything can either be taken care of with strategy or copious preparation.

>> No.2829758

>>2829013
Turn the Cleric into a Fighter. It'll have the speed to cast healing spells before just about everything else, but it won't gain any more MP from levelling up. I imagine your Sage will be your primary healer, but having a Fighter as an emergency backup healer is amazing. Plus, the crit pretty often.

Warrior, on the other hand, would be too slow for a backup healer role, but would be a little more tanky than a fighter.

It's rather great, actually. Very much like III with a job system and aesthetically customizable party members. The new one? I have it, and speaking as a fan of both Dragon Quest and Dynasty Warriors it's a bad matchup.

Difficulty is basically either cakewalk or nigh-impossible, which is reminiscent of the first DQ but it really doesn't work in an action setting - it's fucking frustrating to take on a boss and pull out all the stops and use all your resources and use your entire team's musou attacks and the boss isn't even half-dead.

They also locked playable Psaro behind a fight that you'd need to be on NG+ to beat and of course he joins you more than a dozen levels lower than your guys. You also don't get to keep any of the unique gear you got from quests in NG+ aside from the shit weapons you bought and left behind half the game ago.

You also unlearn your techniques, so once you've gone through NG+ twice (get all those skill points, unlock everyone's abilities) then there's little point in ever doing NG+ again, so extremely diminishing returns. Also they will not give you enough skill points to get all your skills in a single playthrough, or even two.

Great games, but I think DQ6 heralded the series becoming much more breakable in general and that it lost something thanks to that. With DQ6 in particular, there are a lot of combinations you can pull with its class system that the game doesn't feel like it's prepared to handle and the resource management aspect goes straight to hell because of the change in inventory systems and because it's very easy to get your melee dudes to learn a healing spell or two to put their otherwise useless MP to use topping the party off in case you don't feel like using the 99 Medical Herbs that are trivial to buy.

DQ3 sort of had the latter problem but its much stricter class and class change systems made it much harder to pull off.

Torneko's chapter is pretty hype on the DS since you can essentially pass 99x Steel Broadswords, or with luck, 99x Cautery Swords and get mad dosh from the get go on the 5th chapter. Don't worry shit really picks up afterwards. Torneko's part is just a small window into the life of a Great Goym.

Unnecessary name changes, for example Nera's name change only happened because Bianca meant white in Italian so for some reason they decided to change Flora's name to Nera which means black in Italian. I don't know why translators love doing shit like that, and it's more than just that. Also there's censorship in the translation. Personally it doesn't bother me, but I can understand why purists are bothered by it.

Well, it's not like Flora was the official name in the west already, and it doesn't take away anything and, if anything, adds meaning to the names. They're localizing, not directly translating, so they need to add somewhere the flavor that can be lost in translation. I'd understand getting pissed at accents that can make some stuff hard to understand (Took me a long while in DQIV to understand that "turr" meant "tower"), but modified dialogue is a rather silly reason to be angry on DQV, since the DS adds so much more stuff.

Also DW1 is super bare bones. By today's standards it's pretty bad, it's just historically significant.

Honestly, I'd say you can skip II as well because it's also one of those early RPG building blocks that's not really representative of the series as a whole, much like FF2.

DQ/DW doesn't really shine until 3. I'd def recommend playing the SFC remake of that.

I can't be bothered to dig through 260+ replies to see if any of these questions were already asked, so forgive me if I'm being redundant.

I've already conquered DQ1 and 2, and I'm thinking about starting on 3 and 4. I'll be playing the NES versions.

There are a couple of concerns I had:

- What's the suggested approach to DQ3's class system? e.g. Which classes you would recommend starting as, when I should switch, etc.

- Are there any "missables" between these two games? The earlier DQ games had respawning treasure chests, so that wasn't an issue. I'm not sure if later games use the same treasure system, or if areas that I visit early on become permanently inaccessible later in the story.

I'm a completionist, so I would ideally like to go for 100% in as few playthroughs as possible.

>What's the suggested approach to DQ3's class system?
Make 3 classes you like, pretty much every class has something good going for them, even the joke class. I made my team entirely based off how I liked them aesthetically, because I want to have a fond memory of playing this game. Do bring a Cleric/Pilgrim around, though, healing is way too good. And also do make them girls, as females get shitloads of great equipment, and there are no male-only gear, as far as I've seen at least. I'd also suggest the SNES version, but that's up to you.

I have yet to come across anything missable other than some Mini-medals in a town that changes (it was in a chest, so it's hard to miss), and if you really are concerned about that chances are you'll be following a guide. You can sell some one-of a kind items, though.

I really wasn't paying much attention to bonuses or completion in DQIV as I finished it in the DS and I was on a vacation at the beach, but I can tell you Alena rocks the game hard and it has an extra scenario, so if you want to see that you you'll need to get the DS version.

>> No.2853016

>>2852962
Regarding 3 and its class systems, my personal setup (don't give a shit if you have proof that it's sub-optimal or whatever) is:

Hero, Warrior, Pilgrim, Wizard (then Sage). This gives you two physical classes, a healer, an offense magic caster, and later in the game an offense/healer caster, because I find the end game gets fairly rough without two healers to spread the healing around when needed. Some of the bosses, too - Orochi comes to mind.

In fact, the Magic Bikini might as well be the best armor for anyone that isn't a Hero, a Soldier, a Pilgrim or a Sage (who can equip the Magic Armor which has the same defense as the Magic Bikini). Then again, that does looks like the best party for the NES.

For me, III has a really amazing sense of scope and adventure. I guess it's a combination of your characters being completely chosen by you, and the fact that the world map is based on the actual world for the most part. That, and the ending reveal.

I can't really put too much of a finger on it, but it really is my favorite of the series, and I enjoy myself immensely, regardless of which version of it I'm playing.

I've never played a DQ game (but plenty of other jrpgs). Right now on my first playthrough of DQV. What should I play next if I don't care about the story (but rather the mechanics, systems, customization)?
What I'm liking so far:

– Monster recruiting
– Atmospheric little things (day/night cycle, which affects backgrounds, castle bridge, ship schedule)

If you're more wanting to go for a mainline DQ, and don't want to go for the first two (which would be a shame in my opinion, as they're charming despite their age), then start with IV and work onward.
I leave III out only on the assumption of not playing I and II. If you go that route, then play 'em all. Seriously. This is the only JRPG series that I legitimately love every entry, even with what flaws they may have.

DQ then is pretty different from DQ now, especially due to Square merging with Enix, and the impact that had on localization quality. The newer localizations feel like completely different games to me. I honestly didn't care for them.

3 is really overrated. Although there's a lot to do and explore, the plot itself is pretty thin, and the class system is rather pointless in execution, namely because there's no actual benefit to class changing in the first place. (Well, unless you want to do a ton of grinding both ways)

Which sounds good in theory, but your stats are effectively halved when you class change. When you track and calculate your status growth after leveling with your new class, there's no actual improvement. This is especially crippling to magic classes, because they'll have so little MP to be of any long-term use in battle. Even worse, if you didn't have the foresight to learn the most potent spells for that class before changing over.

Research the mechanics for yourself if you don't believe me. There's a rather lengthy dissection of class growth rates over at GameFAQs.

It's entirely possible to play the game without changing classes, but you will absolutely end up with better, stronger, more varied characters by using the class change system.

The only version that DOES do it is the NES. From what I understand, what goes on is the game checks your stat against a formula for what that stat SHOULD be at, and if the stat is under, it gives it an extra boost. Otherwise, it gives the stat normal growth rate, or even a lesser rate.

However, due the the randomization and variance of stat growth, you still usually wind up with a noticeable benefit even in the NES version.

Other versions are heavily dependent on your personality as opposed to your class. So if you want a lot of Str, its more important for you to get a personality like Bully than it is for you to be a fighter, though that definitely helps.

Regardless of stats, there is still a heavy benefit to doing a class change in general, and most of those benefits don't smooth out/go away until level 40, which is the level your hero needs to be to beat the game anyways, so by then you usually don't care too much.

Love them. V is my personal favourite. I really dig the battle system and how fast it is. Not using 3D models and overly bombastic animation but simple sprites for monster and prompt weapon/magic attacks. I like how every game really has that sense of an old-fashioned adventure yet it feels a bit different every time.

If I were to name a weak part of the games, I would say characters. Not that they are bad or anything but I always remember each game as an experience and hardly remember any actual character. In every game it feels like the characters form a perfect party and that's how I remember it. But it would certainly help if the characters were more individual and memorable on their own.

I played games I through VI. Really looking forward to VII and VIII on 3DS.

No, I am being fair. My first RPG was actually Pokémon, then moved onto EarthBound and then FF IX and X, and I thought those were the hottest shits around. Ok, my characters are close to lvl 20 in DQ3, but I don't feel like min-maxing, so I have a few questions.

Can I just forget about changing classes or will the game be too hard for me later on?

If I should change someone, what changes would be the best? I have a fighter, a thief and a cleric.

I was considering just changing my cleric into a sage and leaving the rest. Is that a good idea?

And if I change anyone's class, should I only do this once, or is it a good idea to change them again once they hit lvl 20 for the second time?

>> No.2879230

>>2878763
>Can I just forget about changing classes or will the game be too hard for me later on?
You can totally get by without changing classes. and some people will prefer that. You lose potential utility. But, keep in mind, your characters have a shorter exp tree for the first 20 levels, and it takes only about 5-10 minutes outside of the tower to level them back up to 15, which they're very usable at.

>If I should change someone, what changes would be the best? I have a fighter, a thief and a cleric.
Personal recommendations:
Change the fighter into a cleric: You get a faster cleric than normal and get two people healing which is a huge benefit

the cleric into a fighter: You get a fast martial character with insane crit rate and backup healing and stat debuffs. Wouldn't recommend without changing the fighter into a cleric as well, as you need a dedicated healer.

Most recommended: the thief into a sage. There are some killer Wizard spells you need, you get a secondary cleric to heal with, your sage will be pretty buff on terms of attacking thanks to thief's str stat, if you're playing a non-NES version, thief has a nice pool of unused MP to play with, and unless you intend to grind for stat-seeds, the thief's usability drops significantly once they learn their last spell at 20, meaning you can swap with impudence.

>I was considering just changing my cleric into a sage and leaving the rest. Is that a good idea?
Cleric into Sage isn't BAD, but it's not optimal. Sage's gimmick is that it learns both spell lists for Wizard/Cleric. Not only would you have essentially wasted the cleric's first 20 levels, the benefit you get out of it isn't great. You still have a dedicated healer, but now you're shouldering ALL of the party's magic onto one person. Meaning if you need to debuff someone, buff someone else, and STILL heal everyone, you're going to be rather gimped on that.

>should I only do this once
Yes. Only once.

That sounds reasonable. I think I'll change classes after all and go with what you've suggested.

As someone who just recently started, I can tell you there is no reason at all to roll two clerics. Hero + one cleric is enough for you not to need to use any healing items. At least until you hit level 20 when you can change classes like >>2879230 explained.

>does it limit customization that much?
Not really. They filled in the Monster Heart levels that gain nothing with abilities to be re-learned (monster heart abilities can be used between classes, most normal classes can't share moves) so you're not really going to need a specific class for everything. Makes them a lot more important though, so be prepared to grind for them.

Dragon Quest IV is liked because of how it tells the story being somewhat unique among its contemporaries. Everyone's story arc and motivations are laid out before the party even meets up, essentially. This may be common now, but on the NES, it was a very new approach.

That, and despite the character drama not being there as much as V through VIII, the characters themselves were likable, if not archetypal.

TL;DR - It's kind of a "you had to be there"/"look at it for what it did in 19xx" game, but still solid. Even if not exemplary.
