2788434 No.2788434 [Reply] [Original]

Today, after 10 years, I've finally found my first console ever, my cousins gave me it when I was 4, it was 2000. Sadly one day my parents had taken it and put it in the basement cause' "videogames are not good, they make you stupid". After 2 relocations the nes was never found and became a sort myth. From those days I've started collecting videogames wondering if I would ever find that pice of my heart. Today it is a great day, it is not about expand my collection (even though there are some gems), it is about return child.
Does /vr/ has a similar story? Do you remember where you've picked up any of your game? Did someone introduced you into gaming? how?

What do you think about what I found?

Nintendo always outsourced cartridge/console production back in the day.

Combine that with hefty licensing fees and chokehold exclusivity deals, and Nintendo was swimming in cash.

Not to mention whoring out their game mascots to everyone on the planet (Mario has seen everything from the front & back of a cereal box, to children's genitalia (underwear).

>Mattel NES
It was mainly distributed in Canada and Austrailia, Eurobro.

Wiki gibberish incoming:

"In the UK, Italy and Australia which share the PAL A region, two versions of the NES were released; the "Mattel Version" and "NES Version".[67] When the NES was first released in those countries, it was distributed by Mattel and Nintendo decided to use a lockout chip specific to those countries, different from the chip used in other European countries. When Nintendo took over European distribution in 1990, they produced consoles that were then labelled "NES Version"; therefore, the only differences between the two are the text on the front flap and texture on the top/bottom of the casing."

I have several games that still have this sticker on them. Game Corner was a store and rental shop that also had arcade games in the back. I spent many, many hours there as a kid. To this day the combination smell of stale cigarette smoke and a bunch of sweaty geeks makes me think of primal rage and mortal kombat 2. I miss it, they shut down around maybe 1996.

For years there has been this old cartridge I knew nothing about lying outside of my grandma's house. It read Stargate and Atari 2600 on the label.
It was lying there for as long I can remember and neither my mother nor my grandma had any idea where this came from.
I grew up with videogames since early in my upbringing but this cartridge resembled nothing I knew about. I was about to destroy it as the stupid child I was but then an epiphany struck me in the back of my head "what if, just what if, I keep it? I might get the console this belongs to when I grow up" and so I kept it.
Fast forward twelve years later, I get a hold of an Atari with some games and I remember that cartridge I decided to spare it's life.
That was the very first one I wanted to try as soon as I got the Atari hooked up.

I just washed the pins with some alcohol and plugged it in. It worked.

"Jesus fuck man! (accurate words) They really made this things well back in those days!"

I felt good for not destroying it as that single game was better than most of the games I bought the console with. The end.

Also, I'm collecting SMT games as I grew up just admiring those series and having to stick ti just playing emulators and roms.

Feels good man, even if I can't understand shit. I'm not that weaboo just yet.

From the same wikipedia article (it was also mentioned by a Canadabro earlier in the thread):

"..In Europe and Australia, the system was released to two separate marketing regions. One region consisted of most of mainland Europe (excluding Italy), and distribution there was handled by a number of different companies, with Nintendo responsible for most cartridge releases. Most of this region saw a 1986 release. Mattel handled distribution for the other region, consisting of the United Kingdom, Ireland, Canada, Italy, Australia and New Zealand, starting the following year."
