Anyone here who knows about Double Dragon's lore? WHY was she was just standing there while a group of thugs walked up to her? WHY was she kidnapped? How did Billy and Jimmy know about this kidnapping happening if they were just leaving the building? If they got out of the garage just seconds after she was kidnapped, why couldn't they just run after Williams and take her back?

This game's lore, man. It's deep.

So I managed to get Double Dragon Neon on Steam, since it was only a buck. I figured what the hell, might as well give it a shot. However, I feel like the game is Double Dragon in name only, in fact it feels, looks, and sounds more in line with a TMNT game. Especially the jump kick, however it's not the be-all-end-all of offensive options in this game like in TMNT. It only has three enemies and three characters, all of whom only have a passing resemblance to the character's they're based on. Also, the guys don't have nearly as many offensive moves as I remember in the DD games, in fact they have only a few.

What was the deal with this game? Was it meant to be a different game, and then slapped the Double Dragon name last minute on it? I mean it's a good game, funny as shit in some parts, but it's no Double Dragon.

Neon only exists because Majesco/WayForward conducted a poll over which IP they wanted to reboot after the success of A Boy & His Blob on the Wii and Battletoads & Double Dragon got the most votes. Apparently they couldn't get the Battletoads license, so they just made it purely a Double Dragon parody. I don't think they ever have any real intention of making a serious Double Dragon reboot like they did with Contra 4.

Yoshihisa Kishimoto, the original Kunio-kun/Double Dragon creator, had some minor involvement in Neon's development, which basically amounted to giving the team some old concept art to use as reference (pic related) and telling them not to give the Lee brothers pompadours.

In all fairness, it's not like Double Dragon was the most consistent franchise ever (even judging purely from the Technos-produced games), but Neon is hardly how I would've rebooted the franchise.

Also, what is it with Double Dragon never getting a proper remake? Every time it's a couple of fans trying to make a DD game but never the original people who did it. With the case of Rage of the Dragons, they couldn't even get the rights.

There was Double Dragon Advance in 2003, which was made by Atlus under the supervision of Muneki Ebinuma (the lead planner of Super Double Dragon). That's a close as the series got to a full fledged remake of the original and it's the definite Double Dragon game in my book.

There was another Double Dragon remake for smartphones made by Brizo (the same people who did the rare Zeebo version) that has a nice art style, but you have to put up with shitty touch controls.

>With the case of Rage of the Dragons, they couldn't even get the rights.
The weirdest thing about Rage of the Dragons is that even though they couldn't get the Double Dragon rights, it still ended up having a crossover with Power Instinct, which was an Atlus property. I wonder if that was the reason Million broke up with Atlus later on and went to Arc System Works, since Million actually wanted to bring Evoga/Noise Factory to court over Rage of the Dragons, but they didn't have enough money to pursue the case.

As far as the early games are concerned, they likely did the promotional art after the in-game graphics, which was pretty common back then. The only piece of Double Dragon promo art where the characters actually looked like they do in the game was in the Japanese poster for the first arcade game (see >>2788196
), which was actually done by the original pixel artist. Everything else was pretty stylized and I think these sketches (>>2789096) were actually for an unmade game (possibly from the Double Dragon/Kunio-kun crossover game that never got made, pic related).

It could've been SO much more instead of a generic beat'em up with generic enemies replacing most of the unique enemies. Hell, DD2 has a guy that essentially looks like Ahnold, I bet they would've had a field day doing a Schwarzenegger like boss. But hey, it has one of the best credit songs I've ever heard.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e-O_u_y5r1o

As it stands, it comes off more like fanfiction and something that would've been made on Newgrounds. The cassettes also had some balance issues, for example Training Wheels DRAMATICALLY increases your HP, making the others essentially useless.

Indeed. He was my favorite enemy in the arcade version just for his absurd design alone. I like how they reused his animations for Andre the Giant in WWF Superstars.

I'm surprised Neon didn't have more enemies from the later games either. It's just Williams, Linda and Abobo from the first stage, and then a bunch of random new guys from the second stage and onward. Rowper gets a namedrop and that's about it.

His name is Abore and I think he's supposed to be a combination of the suspender guy from the arcade version (he has a similar moveset at least) and another enemy that looked like him who was an Abobo clone (pic related).
>I also read the article with Kishimoto, and I guess you can say WFT was trying to stay true to the series' inconsistency.
Indeed. The NES versions in particular have changes like Jimmy Lee being the Shadow Boss in the first game, Machine Gun Willy being replaced by some Vigo-looking dude in the second game, and Cleopatra actually being a possessed Marian in the third (although that last one was just in the localization). They weren't even consistent about Billy and Jimmy's hair colors in the games.

I've never seen /v/ talk about this game much to be honest, not even when it was on sale last week. Then again, the console version came out in 2012, while the PC version came out in 2014, so the discussion was probably too late. >Didn't they recolor Rowper for him in the NES version?
Not really. Rowper had black and white variants in the arcade version too, as did Williams and Abobo. Some of the colors are different, but that could be attributed to the obvious hardware differences. In terms of enemy roster, the arcade and FC/NES version of Double Dragon 1 mostly differed in their boss characters.

The arcade version had head swaps of other characters as bosses, plus Machine Gun Willy as the final boss. The Mission 1 boss is the Mr. T version of Abobo, the Mission 2 boss is an evil Lee brother wannabe, and the Mission 3 boss is Mr. T with green skin.

The NES version ditches the head swaps completely, promotes Abobo to boss status (he was just a big mook in the arcade version) and introduce a new enemy character, a Jackie Chan lookalike named Chin, as the Mission 2 boss. It also made one of the Lee brothers into the main bad guy, turning the optional sibling battle that occurred when both players defeated Willy together into a mandatory event.

Also, the Lee brothers' hair colors were different between the two versions. On the arcade, Player 1 was the blond haired guy in the blue suit and Player 2 was the brown haired in the red suit. On the NES, Billy has reddish brown hair and a blue outfit, while Jimmy has blond hair and a red outfit.
