I've been playing a lot of Auleria for the PC Engine CD.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zjRbn2cHBxI

There isn't a lot of footage or info of the game out there. It has some nice music tracks by ZUNTATA's Tamayo Kawamoto (though many unfitting tracks - e.g. weird low pulsing synths for bright cheery fields). It's kinda fun, since the graphics are good, but it suffers from some usual JRPG problems:
-little strategy as you grind levels and just spam attack to kill all things as quick as possible
-convoluted menu/HUD that takes up 1/3 of the screen
-enemies spawn randomly from sides of the screen, and can become unavoidable + no invincibility period when attacked means your health drops dangerously low on contact with enemies
-castlevania stairs that exacerbate the above problem
-long stretches of dungeon that look exactly the same and are easy to get lost in

Kinda want it to be over since I feel like i've put quite a bit of time into the game. It has some nice moments and looks great, but is a little bit of a chore to play.

>> No.2785490

Popolocrois is partially obscure because the original game didn't get translated. I used to pour through issues of Newtype looking at the screen shots and salivating over how amazing it looked, saddened we were doomed to never get to play it.

Then it did come out in English on PSP eventually, which leads to the second reason it's obscure. Because it's actually quite crappy and super, SUPER boring to actually play. Alas.

Arabian Nights. I remember it looked very nice playing it two years ago, and it is pretty unique in being based on Arabic mythos to some extent. It has a gimmick where you can collect cards and use them to change the battlefield to introduce some global effect (and the opponents can use their own cards to cancel yours, too) but the balance is pretty awful and all the battles are piss-easy and never require any strategy. Still worth checking out.

>>2785768
This game had an amazing high school anime atmosphere and good incentives for exploration, but the balance was absolute shit. The final boss couldn't even touch me, and I just fought encounters as they came without stopping to grind even once. Also most clubs were kinda useless, I see this game being compared to FFV a lot but it doesn't even remotely have the same depth.

Worth playing for the atmosphere alone though.

>> No.2785897

>>2785889
Yes, I've overleveled. I've overleveled because the game has hands down the highest encounter rate I've seen in JRPGs, literally every 5 steps or so, and enemies give astronomical amounts of EXP and club points too. If I have to run away from every other battle just for the game to have a remote semblance of challenge, it means the game is poorly balanced.

I did enjoy it though. The atmosphere was nice and funny, and it had a sense of non-linearity to it with all the secrets and optional party members that few JRPGs from the era have.

It didn't come across as tongue in cheek, it just came across as the random shit level trolling that derails threads here all the time.

Also in a game like that, there is zero reason to run away from a fight. It's a rare JRPG where running from fights is a worthwhile strategy. Any game you have to go out of your way to make it have some challenge is badly balanced.

Nekketsu Tairiku Burning Heroes.

Thought Mystic Quest or FFIV had entry-level gameplay? Try your entire party sans the main character being computer controlled! Aside from that, it has a couple mildly interesting gimmicks like limit breaks or 8 different scenarios (which, however, are pretty repetitive, with the same final boss and re-used dungeons). It's alright if you're starved for super obscure JRPGs, and it's my pet game because it's so generic it's charming.
