What does /vr/ think of the SG-1000? I love it. Lots of fun games such as Star Jacker and Bomb Jack.

HERO is a ton of fun. I go back to it every now and then.

>> No.2763594

Why would you play any other Bomb Jack version than the GB?

Never even seen one in person.

I'd kinda like to try playing Flicky, but the machine is stupid expensive now. Oh well.

Yeah, but you can play all its good games flawlessly on a Master System. The system itself is useless even if you like it's games.

You might as well say the same thing about the original PlayStation and the GameCube.

In regards to the GameCube, the Wii doesn't play them perfectly. As for the PS1...yeah? It's only really good for sentimentality.

It doesnt?

>> No.2764753

>>2764548
Not him, but the Wii has shittier video output than the GC (on component anyway) and the PS2 has compatibility issues with certain games.

At any rate, I would imagine that there some SG-1000 games that are incompatible with the Mark III/Master System, since they made use of the keyboard peripheral which required the expansion port.

I meant the chipset is the same, however there are a number of hardware differences so Colecovision games would have to be reprogrammed for the SG-1000 and vice versa.

>> No.2764784

>>2764781
Well, then it's not the same. By that logic almost all then computers or consoles were the same since many used some sort of z80 or other similar or identical chips.

>> No.2764786

I actually did a conversion of an SG-1000 game to the Colecovision. They're the same in that they both use a Z80+TMS 9918/19 chipset, but the controllers are completely different as well as the memory map. The biggest headache was redoing the interrupt structure in the game because the Colecovision's interrupt handling is a lot different and more of a headache than the SMS.

>> No.2764812

>>2764786
You did it officially as a job, or as hobby/fanproject? Would be interesting to know.

>> No.2764813

>>2764786
Was it Wonder Boy? Because that's a cool one that had been an SG-1000 exclusive

>>2764775
The graphics and sound are identical. The ColecoVision is cheaper first and foremost and it has way more exclusives - and many SG-1000 exclusives have been converted. The Colecovision also has way more buttons for potentially deeper, more complex games which even if they did exist for sg-1000 would be in Japanese.

>> No.2764816

>>2764812
The latter. I had a fully documented disassembly of the game, but trying to modify the interrupts for the Colecovision was a bitch and a half. Mainly because the NMI is tripped by the 9918 on the Colecovision while it's not on the SG-1000. The latter's interrupt handling is a lot simpler and less timing-sensitive.

>> No.2764817

>>2764813
There's only a couple of SG-1000 games like Girl's Garden that are worth bothering with and I believe they've all been converted for the Colecovision.

>> No.2764819

>>2764816
Nice job. Sounds interesting to do. Also had something similar in mind for some other consoles. But there it's even more harder snce too much is different and gave up at some point. Might try this with Coleco<>SG too just for fun. Sure will still be hard and a pain, but as it sounds way more realistic than a conversion from somewhere else.

you can easily emulate the games, any emulator that can handle master system games can play them. I recommend Fusion.

>> No.2764823

>>2764786
Also any Colecovision game that uses the controller keypad couldn't be converted for the SG-1000 unless you had the latter's keyboard add-on and set things up to use that.

>>2764813
>The Colecovision also has way more buttons for potentially deeper, more complex games which even if they did exist for sg-1000 would be in Japanese

Like I said, the SG-1000 did have a keyboard add-on in Japan, although it wasn't released in PAL regions. So that's actually one better. An entire keyboard versus a little dinky keypad.

NES->TG16 is another popular porting project and then after you've ported the code you can go back and enhance too.

>> No.2764832

Probably because the TG-16 uses a 6502 variant, although the two consoles are otherwise completely different.

Happy to expand your encyclopedic knowledge on the subject then.

>>2764832
It definitely seems to be a step up in challenge but if you're the guy who already ported SG-1000 to Coleco you might find it worth checking out. Personally I'd rather see the SG-1000 exclusives made available for Coleco more since I'm more likely to get a Coleco flash cart than a Master System one as I already have a Megadrive one.

>> No.2764870

When porting also please release source and docs. Really helpful for people to learn and get started instead completly starting from zero again. Also it's not like anyone will make money of this. So not really a reason to keep it himself. Really a big problem in homebrew and similar scene, that people always never release code or knowhow. :(

>> No.2764897

>>2764821
Most of the charm of really old games is in the shitty TV setup and quirky controller.

I can play shittily made flash games online and get the same effect as emulating a Pre megadrive era game. Not the same.

That being said, since I won't be getting this console any time soon, I'll probably end up emulating it anyway.

>Personally I'd rather see the SG-1000 exclusives made available for Coleco more

The console had less than 100 games and the ones that are actually decent and worth playing have all been converted by now.

i like the system

The best games are

>Monaco GP
>SEGA Pitfall II (pretty different from the original)
>Gulkave
>Star Jacker
>Drol
>Girl's Garden
>Wonder Boy (the only re-released SG-1000 game)

GP World has a track editor
Safari Race is similar to Outrun
Dragon Wang has an impossible final boss

That controller gives me painful memories Of my 7800 joystick.

No, really...the 7800 Pro-Stick was physically painful to use for extended periods.
