Is this how /vr/ raises their children and feeds them with retro games instead of old musical artifacts? I hope not. I hope you let your children in peace and let them enjoy gaming and don't torture them with NES hell or other similar torture devices of the old age. Just because you had a hard childhood growing up with these mess of consoles, you don't have to force it onto your children. NES and other is a dying relict for the modern age, no child would bear to play through these games because they look ugly, their unfair and they're no fun. There is literally no benefit for a child to play these games, unlike you guys when you were small. I understand, you had nothing else but this mess back then and I pitty and I grieve with your for you PTSD experienced from NES and others. But please don't do this to your children. Let them explore those old gems themselves when they are older and when THEY want, by free will. If you insist to give them something old, at least have mercy on their sould and give them something that is fun like n64 or a ps2 or a game boy color BUT GOD FORBID NO NES SNES OR SEGA STONEAGE SHIT!!! Please don't do this to your children, don't torture them! I don't want our children to grow up and became social outcast like we here on this thread, just because you guys forced them to play with old consoles , so the children couldn't socialize with the other children! How could you do something unhumane like this to your own children? My boy has a nintendo 3ds with pokemon X and he is very happy :) I wish happiness to all your children as well. Please don't break their spirit for your ego.

Please learn how paragraphs work.

Also, forcing your kid to have fun your way is stupid. So is just letting fads and outside sources dictate all fun for him. My son likes some modern games and some retro games. He plays modern games with his friends. I never forced him to like retro games, he just saw me playing and wanted in, and it's our way to have fun. Sometimes he plays retro games on his own because he feels like it.

It's not about "new" or "old", it's about what's fun FOR HIM. If there are things I find fun I'll share them with him, and if he likes it then great, more stuff for him to enjoy. If he doesn't then he'll just move on.

According to your logic reading Grimm tales to him was wrong because it's creepy, hard to get stoneage shit and all I should be reading to him are current children's book (which barely hold his attention by the way).

Civilisation takes patience(much more than RPGs) which the generations millennial+ don't have.

Unless you spawn something that's got an IQ and attention span to sustain it , I doubt they'd play civilisation or any RTS for that matter.

how the hell would they cope with a nes. Of course they are a few children with a high IQ or with some form of autism from the autism spectrum. Maybe when you a special child, a very intelligent one, who also likes math and stuff and is interested in older stuff, then I would give the child retro consoles to explore and satisfy his knowledge hunger. Of course only if the child would be interested. An average intelligent child wouldnt bother with NES and gameboys for more then a day.

But your lumping SNES games in there near the end shows you don't know absolute shit what you're talking about and are a clueless fuck who was stumbling around and came on something that could have been right. So I have no faith in your contention that parents ever do this, fuck you.

Actually, I think RPGs, specifically turn-based RPGs, require much more patience than strategy games like Civilization because of its emphasis on grinding. Unlike in Civilization, where the overall situation changes every turn, thus keeping the game fresh, in RPGs you face the same situations over and over throughout the game, which is way more boring.

If I had kids I wouldn't force retro gaming on them, but I would definitely give them the opportunity to take a look and try it out. Not all old games are unfairly difficult. FFS some of the best games of the 8/16-bit generations are actually the comfier, more forgiving titles.

>> No.2759549

>>2759514
I don't believe it's about repetition (all games involve repetition), it's the fact that it's repetiiton without a great deal of interactivity. ATB systems kinda mix it up a bit, and that's why Final Fantasy became popular to begin with, but in essence you have a very limited say in how to play a turn based RPG. It becomes very samey.

I think in essence if a game is genuinely fun (ie doesn't ask unreasonable patience or whatever), anyone will like it. Action RPGs have a better hold on this because they're not usually hard and are just fun to play, even if you grind. My son loved Soul Blazer (played it because it had "a cool sword on the cover") and is now obsessed with Illusion of Gaia, in fact he's playing it right now. Has been asking to get a real flute for a couple days now.

Also many posters here act like it's a console generation breach. Not so. Let's not forget that for younger generations, mobile gaming is where it's at. Easier and more accesible. Console requires investment, account creation, patches, setups, etc, which involves patience, whereas mobile games are pretty much download and play. Most of the current games my son wants to play because his friends are playing too are mobile. Only very rarely does he even talk about modern consoles. His uncle has a PS3 and he sometimes plays with it, but it's clear he prefers his mobile stuff.

It's really hard to keep a conversation going, especially when the parent is right there not helping out at all and enjoying watching you suffer.

Kids are people too. As humans, we generally want to be liked and enjoy one anothers' company.

My girlfriend and I won Megan Trainor tickets from Quizzo (more of a punishment for coming in 3rd place), but decided that since it was at a venue we'd never been to that we should at least check it out.

THOUSANDS of pre and early teen girls everywhere. We hung back at the tented bleacher seating when some girl who looked like she had just finished crying (12-14yo) sat next to us (late 20s/early30s couple).

A few minutes later she turned to us and said "This song isn't even on her album, I'm surprised shes singing it". Not knowing anything about Megan Trainor, we just played along and asked questions. She was pretty happy to talk to us, tell us the name of every song and give us wikipedia like facts about the artists.

We didn't really care, but enjoyed cheering this girl up by being interested in what she liked.

It was pretty cool. Kids can be decent when you don't treat them like schmucks.

it's really not as dangerous out there as people think, I think the modern mindset is really hurting kids, kids have no freedom anymore and that's really what kids need to expand their minds and grow as people, it's why the current generation is so nieve and ultra-sensative, because they were never allowed out of site of their parents and allowed to learn how to be themselves.

Young kids will likely want to play retro consoles by their own will. At least when I was a kid the age of the games and graphics made no difference to me, I wanted to play any and all of the games that I could. Hell, I grew up with the original playstation and one of my all time favorite games for it was the Activision Classics collection.

You have a basic premise that insults the entire board. Fantastic bait. Then you have a rambling tl:dr monologue, followed by some stuff that's meant to bait people into arguing about generations.

Pure brilliance! Truly archive worthy. It proves once again that a site built solely around antagonizing strangers on the internet is a great idea, and truly a good use of your life.

I've been spending time on this site ever since I discovered it on Tumblr. I am attempting to write a thesis on the psychology of the Internet troll. It's truly fascinating stuff.

The subject has been discussed before, at length. However my time on 4chan has really given me some unique insight. Trolling is definitely a by product of mental illness and anti-social psychological problems.

While the term "autism" is thrown around here far too frequently, in many cases, troll topics really do show signs of users who are afflicted with autism, and other autism spectrum disorders.

Many 4chan users will self ridicule by saying they have no friends and spend all their time on the computer. This honestly seems to be honest admission about their personal lives. This self imposed isolation from so called "normies" is clearly a byproduct of their personality problems, anti-social behavior and various form of mental illness.

The desire to cause conflict with strangers on the Internet has actually been proven to be a byproduct of psychotic behavior. It should come as no surprise that this site has seen several real like murderers confess their crimes on these pages.

Of all the boards on 4chan, /v/r has been one of the best for giving me real insight to mentally troubled teens and their online exploits. I can't thank you guys enough, but at the same time, I desperately hope you get the help you need.

Wishing you all the best.

People are acting like it's an all or nothing scenario. That if you introduce a kid to Super Mario, that's the only thing he would ever be able to talk about.

Any reasonable parent with children who like games would give them access to a wide range of games both modern and classic and let them find what they enjoy. Which is what I assume most do. It's what my brother does with his kids and my wife's sister does with her's.

Just like most parents will share the music they like, to introduce the kids to what they enjoy. But there are very few who set the unbreakable rule that they're only allowed to listen to Creedence Clearwater Revival until the age of 18.

Ok this is definitely bate but I'll bite.
I don't have kids of my own nor do I want them.
I do have a nephew who is 10 and looks up to me a lot, I never tried to force anything on him when it came to the games that I grew up with.
He took a interest in my collection of older games on his own, every time he would come over
he wanted to play Super Nintendo, Genesis or NES
we would stay up all night playing games like
Mortal Kombat II, Super Mario World, Super Mario Bros 3 and 2 as well as getting him into
his first time playing an RPG which was Secret of Mana, I always let him play the main character while I played as the Sprite.
He had a blast playing those games and by the time he was 9 we were playing CvS2, Samurai Shodown, Neo Geo Battle Colosseum the Street Fighter Alpha series MvC2 and KoF98.
He fell in love with fighting games after that and was a pretty fast learner at fighting games for his age.
We also played a lot of Resident Evil One and
Resident Evil 4
>I know not /vr/
For his birthday he wanted me to buy him
a Gameboy micro and some games which I did
he absolutely loves that thing and would bring it with him every where.
I think if kids like something enough they will get into it on their own I never tried to force anything on to him.
It was the same with music and anime or any form of entertainment for that matter and if he didn't like something he would tell me.

Congratulations, you completely misunderstood my statement. I don't give a fuck about trying to get kids to play Mario, they can do it of their own volition. Or not. Again, I don't give a fuck.

>Angry Birds doesn't require skill

Wow, the ignorance is palpable. Have you even played Angry Birds before, or are you just buttmad because it dethroned Mario as the de-facto video game mascot?

And finally, to cement that you really have no clue what you're talking about, you are conflating NES and arcade games, like they're the same thing [torture!!!1].

"well if you put Mario games on smartphones... ...this will never happen which is the flaw in your logic"

Notice how I never mentioned porting Mario to mobile, and instead mentioned how most mobile games come with scoreboards, including the bragging rights that come with them, AKA arcade styled?

Like holy shit, you're so dense. Let me spell out my original point as clearly as possible since you obviously don't want to put in the effort of critical thinking.

Mario is perfectly fun for the kids. The only legitimate point as to why you personally think kids don't like older games is because "it's too hard uwu", which can be easily dismissed with "play more scrub". The "arcade like reward system" is something called level progression, and literally every single fucking game in the world has it (including mobile games, oh snap). Arcade styled gameplay (read: high scores) is fucking EVERYWHERE in mobile gaming, because it takes the least effort to program.

I'm actually curious, do you seriously want all of your games to be cold, calculated, dopamine delivery machines?

The first Angry Birds you bought through a single $10 purchase, was a legit skill game.
The sequels are freemium garbage that would greatly raise the difficulty if you play for too long without making micro transactions.

>> No.2762717

Okay, so which is it? Skill or no skill?

Or are we talking skill vs difficulty now? Because either way, I've asserted that mobile games are very arcade-oriented, and that they're still popular with the younger crowd. Difficulty is purely a matter of opinion (and ability, of course). The sequels were still hard, no?

Raising kids on retro is, in my humble opinion, actually beneficial. It teaches the player to enjoy the game for what it is, no flashy advertising or viral bandwagoning. There's a good article on this, actually:

The original Angry Birds is a great game. You made a single purchase and got the whole package.

The sequels are ridden by micro transactions. It's free to download, but after a few hours without making an in-app purchase the game will raising the weight and resistance in the pieces on the level. The later levels are almost impossible to beat. You start getting notifications to buy more powerful items in the in-game store and once you do the difficulty goes down to the original value for a couple hours again. Then it's greatly back up again and you start receiving notifications to buy stronger items, rinse and repeat.
If you start playing well by earning golden medals, the timer runs out faster. If you stay for too long without starting the game up, the difficulty gets lowered for a couple minutes and you get bonus coins and items, as motivation to get you hooked. It's very manipulative.

Right, the touch interface for mobile games made casual games much less frustrating to play and allowed for what I believe to be a resurgence of new arcade-styled games (with a bunch of already-existing games on the market day one) and, of course, the scourge of microtransactions and the various terrors you can unleash upon your audience that comes with it.

So I suppose that ties into my "can of worms" comment earlier. Don't worry, I'm not defending that in the slightest.

Your kids are going to be brain dead losers if you want them to conform to society's rules. You'll have a kid that'll contribute to the cancer of society by creating music, film and games influenced by a declining generation of lazy untalented people who never think out side the box or push boundaries on normal conventions. the difference between a classic arcade reward system and a modern game is that you actually get something, like trophies, a cinematic ending or extra content, a nice ending to watch (an ending without cinematics).

but take nes mario 1 for example. no rewards. you go through all the hardship of this terrible game. and what do you get at the end? a 5 second ending. that's why nes games and all arcade games prior to nes don't appeal to children. it's literally no fun. the only fun back then in the 80s was the challenging, but nowadays there are more fun and productive ways to use your gaming time. Even for challenging stuff there are better alternatives. It's just not worth it beyond maybe a weekend or so. Most adult gamers don't have the patience for nes gaming, let alone children. remember gaming is about having fun, and most people don't enjoy nes games nowadays. ethat is a fact. sorry if i hit your bubble or someting.

And I don't care if they like modern things either.
If they want to go ahead and play Five Nights at Freddy's 27: HD Remaster 7th Anniversary Edition, or whatever the fuck they'll have then, they sure as hell can.

I am getting the help I need, but I don't know for how long. My insurance company only covers 10 visits to a therapist per year. What am I supposed to get done with that? That's bullshit.

I'd rather figure out the insurance first. 10 visits? What were they thinking? That's not even enough for once a month. Someone's getting fucked tonight.

Are you kidding? Kids are nuts about old music and old video games. So much so that "I was born in the wrong generation" is a total joke.

Quit being wrong on the Internet please.

This isn't knocking what you're saying, but it makes me think. I'm pretty young by /vr/ standards, do you think kids wouldn't be so into older games if there wasn't a ton of jaded adults constantly spinning tales of how good video games were back in their day? Kinda like how a lot of the kiddies that only listen to classic rock were influenced by their dad or someone ranting about how all new music is shit?

>I'm pretty young by /vr/ standards

well, what about you? You like older games because other people told you, or because you ended up having fun?

>> No.2771283

At first I was in that attitude of, 'Back in the older days the game companies actually CARED about what they were making and old games are art and blah blah blah...'

Now I realize they're, well, games. Some are good, some are bad, and a ton are absolutely mediocre. I still like retro games because what I do agree with is that there was a bit of weirdness on older consoles and PC titles that we don't really get now, so it's interesting to visit that period and see what the fuck was going on.

So yeah, I got started because people told me retro games are the only way, and I found my own opinion and still play for different reasons other than the idea that 'old' correlates with 'good'.

I'm sure adults liking old games/music influences kids into liking old games/music. What I mock is the notion that doing so will make you a social outcast, because every kid is also liking old games/music, as well as other stuff.

And besides, it's not like showing kids older things is going to decrease their interest in newer things. Y'know, unless the dad beats her for daring to think about music or games beyond the year 2000.

>good ports of Resident Evil 2 and Megaman Legens, Rayman 2 (much better than Playstation, not as good as Dreamcast)

I agree with the majority of your post but Mega Man 64 is dogshit and widely agreed to be

>> No.2771401

Actually that's not the case, MM64 is a competent port that has some pros over the PS1 version like many corrected graphics/camera work (invisible walls, texture flickering, etc), it has worse draw distance but it was already bad on PS1, N64 is worse though. Voices are too compressed on MM64 and sound muffled, but the actual music and sound effects are about the same.

I think the port was not a good job, but mainly because it could have been much better (for example RE2), but it isn't dogshit either. Between Legends on PS1 and N64 I think I'd go for N64 just because I can avoid loading times. Muffled voices don't really bother me that much and the draw distance is barely noticeable only on open areas (most of the game take place in the underground caves and there's no fraw distance problem there), and again, PS1 also has draw distance problems anyway.
PC version is arguably the best one because of bigger resolution, but it has synch audio issues.

There's no perfect or definitive version of Legends.

I have yet to try the PSP version though.

RE2 on the 64 is a miracle of compression in itself already, so it's a bit much to expect anything as good as RE2's port
