I'm working on some boxes for GG games, and I'd like your opinion.
Before anyone says it, I know there are no replacement for the original ones, yes.
And no, I'm not going to sell them, when the template is done I'll upload the files for anyone to use.

Anything I should add, remove, change?
Thanks in advance.

Hey man, I really like what I'm seeing so far. I really dig stuff like this and would love to see more. Great work!

A rough sample to show the size.

This is the one I made for GB/GBC games. If you use your imagination you can kinda picture how they will end up looking.

Very cool. Here's something I need to ask.

If I print this out on typical 8X11 piece of paper, will it come out the right size? I have no photoshop skills so having something print ready is very important for me.

Incredibly cool, but there is one thing I would change.

The flap should open to the back. Over time it's going to wear and you don't want that on the front of the box. The thumb tab and the flap should be on the back of the box, not the front.

That's my only suggestion. Everything else looks awesome.

Not those ones I uploaded, no. I resized those for posting here, but my idea is that. The templates are made all in the right resolution and color scheme, so you just need to print and assemble.

>>2749206
On the back? I never considered that.
That's simple to change, I wouldn't mind providing two templates, so people can pick whatever they like better.

I only mention it because the black ink is going to wear off very quickly.

What kind of card stock are you using to print these boxes?

>> No.2749284

I can appreciate what you are doing, but I don't see the point. Also, where are you supposed to put the manual?

>> No.2749291

>>2749231
Ah, yes. Good creasing helps, but im afraid yes, it might happen. With the GB/GBC ones I haven't had much trouble, every fold is measured so they open and close easily.

I recommend printing in any paper that is at least 250g/m2. Then it's really up to each person, what they can and want to afford, what kind of finish they like on their paper. Print it at home, or take it to a print shop.

>>2749284
It's just an option, really. Some people store their games in shoeboxes and that is perfectly fine. In case you'd like to store them in a way you can display or have quick access, but without leaving them taking direct dust or whatever, they are an option.
As with the GB/GBC ones, I didn't consider the manuals because when I talked to people, I found out that whoever has the cart and the manual, usually they also have the box, or are looking for a original or replacement one.

Number of players.
In fact you might want to look at how the Japanese box layout was done and base yours more on that. Having all that info on the front is nice. It would also be nice to have some on the side so you could easily tell what type of game and how many players without taking the cart off the shelf.

Allright, thanks for the input everybody, I appreciate it.

did GG gameboxes contained extras? like manuals or paper holder?

Yes.

Awesome work OP, I'd definitely get these later on. I tried using cassette tape boxes for that kind of stuff but the GG carts don't quite fit.

Could you make some that would accommodate the dust covers as well?

Good point. Nearly all mine are in those. How was the original packaging done?

>> No.2751801

if you actually want to print them you'll need to use card stock, normal printer paper will be too thin and will just fall apart

Allright then, here's the template:

If you have absolutely none photoshop skills, then let me know which games you'd like boxes and I'll make them for you, if you're still interested.

The main problem is that the boxes are very small. When I did the GB/GBC ones, I added all the info I could, and when I printed one, it looked like a mess. If they were bigger I'd probably add way more information.

>>2750418
>>2751731
I can adjust the template, no problem.
But all my GG games came without those. So I'd need the dimensions on them to adjust properly, then it's no problem.

>>2752535
>the boxes are very small
Use images. Like the Japanese boxes. Which you really should look at.
Also, are you the same anon who did the GB boxes a while back? If so, I still think it would be a good idea to to do these in a vector format for cutter plotters. Even though most people don't have them many output places do. People could send off a file and get back a high quality laser printed, scored and cut box.

>> No.2754505

>>2753492
I've considered all boxes when making that template. The japanese ones are too crowded, but they work for their size. The american ones could work, with the purple bar on the side, but finding the box art that fits is a nightmare.
In all honesty, I haven't worked much with a cutter plotter. Only for some stickers and simple things. The idea is that they cut the box all by itself? Do they cut paper that thick?
Also, I made the GB boxes, and the first time I did them, I used vectors for everything possible. You know the bad part of doing that? The vectors print wonderfully, but the screenshots and box art don't, because, well, mostly because they are not the original 1million DPI illustration. So it's screaming when you look at the box, the difference between what's vector and what's not, you know? Making them all pixels makes it so there's a middle line, and it works better (at least to me).

>> No.2754537

>>2754505
Cutter plotters can handle thick paper. They can also score the paper so it's easier to fold. Granted not many people have one but a lot of output centers do so people could use those.
The reason the screenshots look bad is because the printer or driver is scaling them using whatever algorithm they use for photos. Scale them manually first using whatever algorithm or combination you like. You'll get better results.

>> No.2757672

>>2752535
The dust covers are kinda hard to measure, as they don't have squared angles. I'll try tomorrow.

>> No.2758491

>>2752535
Just measured a case.
84mm tall (hinge to latch)
77mm wide
16mm deep.

You'll want to add plenty of space to the box. In particular for depth in case someone wants to stuff a manual in there.
