Do you like Super Mario Bros. 2, /vr/? Am I weird for liking it, especially the All-Stars version, more than SMB 3? Not by a lot, and I don't think it's objectively a better game, but given the choice I would rather replay SMB 2 than SMB 3.

I think there's something special about how SMB 2's worlds are built and is not common in other games. There's a lot of vertical movement, which the scrolling somehow makes more fun, not less, and it feels a little more exploration-centric than SMB 3 thanks to the keys mechanic.

By the way, if you know more games that to you feel like SMB 2, please do tell.

Not at all OP. I really like Super Mario Bros. 2/ Doki Doki Panic's style of gameplay period. It's just fun to pick up fucking everything and just slam shit into other shit.

Plus, The All-Stars version of SMB2 has really cool detailed backgrounds for the worlds.

Finally, I think DDP just fits better as a Mario game anyway. Even in Japan DDP is fuckin obscure as shit.

That's understandable. At the time it wasn't so clear but now SMB 2 feels like a gaiden game -- related to the series but different enough to be its own thing (not terribly surprising given its origins).

You can imagine an alternative universe where SMB 2 defined the direction for the rest of the series. In that universe Super Mario Bros is now something like a Metroidvania-light.

not at all.

I don't share your opinion as I like 3 more, but Mario 2 is a whole different experience and I am saddened that they never made another Mario like it.

Those levels where there were spikes and you had to ride an enemy over the spikes, or that one level where it was you and a birdo with a huge gap in front of you, and you had to wait until it spit out an egg so you could ride the egg over the large gap...

none of this was ever in any new Mario game since and that's sad.

What about climbing up a huge waterfall and finding a whole world above the clouds above?

Jumping around a sea filled with giant whales that shot water up that you could ride?

Riding that albatoss in that one desert level 6-2 where there was basically no ground, just a huge hole?

Going inside dar pyramids and digging underground to find tunnels?

None of the other Mario games match experiences like this. Every other mario game is a very standard experience of going in and out of pipes and destroying blocks and stomping on enemies, and that's nice, but I really liked how Mario 2 kept it fresh and had so many different ideas.

In a time when New Super Mario Bros Wii is basically the same as New Super Mario Bros. DS and WiiU, and now Mario maker is the same as well, adding some SMB2/Doki Doki elements would really bring some much-needed variety to new Mario Games

I think the best memory of SMB 2 for me was ice level with the whales. Being able to ride the water they shoot out was fuckin cool as hell.

I really wish Nintendo had brought back the style of graphics from SMB2 for Mario Maker, but that would be suggesting they can actually think in this day and age.

When I was 5 SMB2 is one of the few early games I played where certain parts filled me with actual dread.

The high tension music right before a birdo match caused me to lose more than the actual difficulty

The flying carpet sections gave me vertigo

I would try and find a way around dungeons to avoid its dangers

and of corse pic related

For me it was the first survival horror

It's not weird to like that Mario Bros. The most OP. It's definitely not the most popular one, but it's plenty of people's favorite, myself included.

One thing that's cool about each Mario game on the NES is that each sequel does feel like an expansion on all the stuff that came before, but doesn't necessarily make the games that came before feel obsolete. Each game does have its own appeal and sense of personality, so it's easy to see why someone would like just about any entry the most.

As far as recommendations similar to Mario 2 go, the game is pretty unique. You may want to check out the Chip & Dale game on NES. I've barely played it myself, so maybe someone else can vouch for wether or not it should be compared to Mario 2. It is a platformer that involves picking up items, carrying them over your head and throwing them at enemies though, so they at least have that in common.

I think it's exactly because of those features that they aren't included in. It's too different from the rest of the super mario games. Mario maker allows you to change the game while retaining stage layouts, which wouldn't work for a SMB2 stage.
There's also the option for using different characters which aren't available/usable for the other super mario games.

for dramatic build up. throughout the game, you get used to the hawk heads as a safe exit, then suddenly one comes to life and attacks you. it's spooky as fuck because it violates the sense of logic and rapport you had with the game. it also lets you know that now it's for real, Wart awaits you. the hawk head knows he's guarding Wart, so he's more hardcore than the rest.

>>2751967
yes that's the level, and you need to do dungeon crawling and bring a key from a birdo to get there. and the game doesn't become unwinnable - if you don't go in the hawk head right away, it closes and fights again, and you have to hit it another 3 times.

No. The head can't be placed in such a way that it both intersects a wall yet can also be damaged.

And even if it were, as the previous anon said, it reanimates after several seconds if you don't (or can't) enter it.
