We all have one. That game you love to death and no matter how much you praise it most people don't seem to get it the way you do.

Shiren is mine. Charming as all fuck but balls to the wall hard. Even with an official English release finally out there it's largely ignored.

What's yours /vr/?

Well the DS port they brought over was made easier but is still pretty great. It didn't sell very well though. Perhaps I will give the N64 one a shot. The Wii game was pretty awful.

Mostly ChunSoft is making Pokemon and other Mystery Dungeon games these days which have been pretty meh.

I immensely enjoyed Uprising - Join or Die but it seems to be completely forgotten over time.

It did get a sequel, though, but it simplified some mechanics (for example, buildings could only be destroyed by certain units while in the sequel you can even blow them up with you puny main gun) and made it less fun.

It's a roguelike and they're hard by design. It's sort of like a little RPG, you're going through 25 floors of a dungeon each with different enemies and as you go along you collect items and weapons. The hitch is that the dungeon layout and items change every time you play, and if you die you loose everything starting back at the beginning. Tough, but very entertaining games.

I'm not a huge fan of the post-game dungeons but the normal game is tons of fun, especially because it expects you to die and gives you mechanics to improve later playthroughs, whether it's through offloading good gear/stat booster items in storage, unlocking the fusion pot, getting the food staff through one of the questlines, or unlocking new companions.

Same here, I went through some of the post game stuff but compared to the main game it doesn't hold up as well. I love the companions. The way that in the beginning they're all so horrible, but as time goes on they become super useful. Even though they inevitably always die somewhere along the way. I don't think I've ever finished a game with them still alive.

>>2746834
Ehhh, I find the people over at the roguelike general pretty annoying on the whole. It's almost 24/7 DCSS and PCB despite almost none of them beating either.

I tried asking them about Powder at one point and got back that the food system was too complicated and that having to be careful about not attacking everything in sight and avoiding over leveling was "terrible game design".

Then someone referred to Ido Yehieli as a casual, I laughed and haven't gone back since. So many generals are like that, it's very odd.

It was super painful. Someone I think from around here asked for some Powder tips because I asked if anyone there played it.

I was describing how it's pretty hard and the enemies level with you, so one of the keys to winning is being careful about what you attack and what you avoid. (this guy was getting wrecked by bats which are fast but non-aggressive and best left alone)

Then they started talking about how that is terrible game design. Literally not having mindless level grinding and murder everything in sight is terrible game design. I felt embarrassed for them just reading the thread.

Wrecking crew on NES. I had gotten SMB 1 & 3 for my NES as a kid and played it all the time. My mom called me from work one afternoon saying she bought me a Mario game because she knows I like them.

Being a kid with a mom who knows nothing about video games I was super excited immediately guessing she got me SMB2.

She came home with Wrecking Crew, and of course you have to do the "Oh...thanks mom."- thing to not be a jerk when your mom tried to do something nice.

So I play it to make her feel fulfilled...and although I initially thought it was like some bootleg game (again me, pre internet as a child, plus it wasn't in box or anything), kinda liked it. It was no SMB but the music was great and it was a fun lil game.

Thanks mom. You're the best

San Francisco Rush for the N64 received really poor reviews for having unrealistic automobile handling and general physics. The reviewers seemed to be comparing it to an auto sim such as Gran Turismo. However, the game was actually designed around a basis of exploration where you needed to find ways to take your vehicle on insane & precise jumps through narrow crevices between buildings and land on your wheels in order to discover hidden areas. The idea is to learn the game's physics, such as the exact right angle at which to take jumps so that your vehicle will land properly. If you're slightly off, then your vehicle may roll on landing, at which case there's roughly a 50/50 chance it will land on its tires (and you live and get to explore the area you discovered) or that it will land on its roof (and you die and get taken back to the regular track).

They did something else I liked in contrast to Gran Turismo: not licensing actual car models (while basically still plagiarizing familiar models such as classic VW Beatles and Chevy Camaros). The upshot is that the cars take visual damage from collisions. The game was rich in visual damage gradients to all parts of the vehicle, and it was fun to try & get the most damage possible without exploding. There must've been a hidden HP level. Although the game had no health bar, if your car was badly damaged, then a light collision that wouldn't normally result in an explosion, could easily cause an explosion.

The OST was also heavily criticized, but I found the tracks positively memorable, particularly this gem

This game was great. And it would have been damn near to perfect if it had two things. Better graphics for the day it was made. Don't get me wrong, graphics are not important, but Wild Arms 2 was a game that came out fairly late in the PSX and it looks marginally better than the first one which looked frankly, horrible as far as battle scenes are concerned.

But that's not as important. It's poor localisation and translation were things that should have been better. At times you can cringe at how bad some of the stuff is.

If those things were better, WA2 would be a 10/10 rpg because it is bloody well fantastic.

Densha De GO! games. I really like this series, but people usually dismiss it as simulators for trains otakus, which is as much correct as saying that Outrun games are simulators for cars otakus.
I think it's fun and unique arcade title, and although it requires much less user input than car driving games, it still can be very exciting as memorization and precision are necessary and at the same time it's very calming thanks to the nature of its setting and the great sound design.

I think I saw one on Playasia, but it's the different series, don't know anything about it. The last DDG was on DS, I had it on the flashcart, but didn't care much for it.
The version I played the most is DDG3 for PS2, but I've started with PC version of DDG Final. Although it's considered the easiest one and too forgiving, it has fun score chaining and the best graphics in the series. I think it's a good starting point as tracks with higher difficulty are locked in the beginning and if you're familiar with series it probably can be tedious to unlock them.

I wanted to comment on OP but forgot to do it. I like Shiren a lot, but I stopped playing it because I'm too much of a hoarder and every session I was just stuffing rooms with items and crafting my great sword, which at this point is too perfect to take it in the dungeons, because of fear of losing it out of some stupid mistake. Also I think Shiren is one of my favorite character designs, it's funny how coat made from Torneko's shirt and a weasel can make generic Japanese wanderer so memorable.

Thanks I'll look into it! I enjoyed the 3DS ones, they're pretty easy but sometimes I just like something simple and pretty and the 3D looked nice.

If you ever go back to Shiren, I would recommend forgetting about your stored greatsword for a while and play it like a more typical roguelike where you expect to die and lose everything. That will discourage you from just hoarding loot and get you into the mindset of using everything at your disposal. Just keep seeing how far you can get with what you find randomly.

Then when you've got a bit more confident, pick up your sword and try another run. My first successful Shiren run was with a crazy boosted greatsword like that. Even if you do lose it, you can always make another.

I've come across this a few times while searching for obscure Japanese roguelikes. Most besides Shiren and Milandra, are for early Windows PC's. How difficult is Milandra without a high level of Japanese fluency?

Just looked this up on youtube. Doesn't look my kind of thing, but damn that music is cool.

Is that SFC cover supposed to be bad box art? Cause I really like it.

I've never played Shiren, but that cover looks like an awesome SNES game cover somehow, I would have totally bought it if I had a DS and saw that (and if I bought games by their cover).
