Back in the day, I remember when gaming magazines would have ads in the back, where you could order japanese snes, sega, and toys. Did any of buy any of these back then?

I wanted all that crap. I was a poor kid then though, so I could only dream

>> No.2744858

I never ordered early access imports from magazines but once I started driving I went to the import shop in the city and would buy stuff used that never saw US release.

>> No.2744862

Post said ads?

Never had these in my country, although I could get japanese goods in certain stores, especially one owned by a japanese man (who was rumoured to be relative of Miyamoto, but I think that was always bullshit, lel)

Same.
In '99, when I was 11, I used to go through my older friends old Game Fan issues and salivated at the thought of actually buying those Japanese games for the playstation (getting Dragonball GT, Ultimate Battle 22, Megaman X3 on Saturn).

If only I knew how shit those would have been.

>>2744889

Here piracy for PS1 would be rampant. Finding the DBZ games wasn't hard since DBZ was very popular during those days. I remember buying all 3 DBZ games for PS1 in bootleg form.
I enjoyed Legends, the other 2 were rather shit, yeah, especially compared to the previous DBZ fighting games like Butoden 2 or Hyper Dimension. Shin Butoden on Saturn was OK.

I already went through a teenager phase of "I hate DBZ because it's popular", then came back to loving it.

The anime has some issues but the manga is still gold.

These ads were such teases back then. I distinctly remember one of the stores being "Gamecave"

Googled an ad.

>> No.2745092

>>2745079Paying 69.95 for a sailor moon set?!?!

No pictures of said items, just vague descriptions.

No reviews and no way to price compare.

Times must have been rough.

I remember when Die Hard didn't have their own magazine yet and their import shop ads ran in EGM. I would call them long distance after business hours to listen to their wait music loop because it was import game OSTs.

I bought the magazines partially because of these ads. They had pics of games I could only dream about at the time.

"Dracula XX"

Huh?

>> No.2745184

>>2745169

That was the name of the SNES game that was otherwise released here as Dracula X.
SOTN's japanese name is Akumajou Dracula X: Gekka no yasoukyoku (Demon Castle Dracula X: Nocturne in moonlight).

They probably mixed the names up.

Ahhhh, I loved looking at every single thing on these pages. They were the stuff wet dreams were made of. They helped me mythicize Japan as a young child.

I never did order anything though as it was all too expensive for little me.

Lol, me too anon. We're the same age, btw.

>>2745092
They were much different times anon. You could argue that it was more difficult to be a weeb then, but y'know, I actually thought it made the payoff that much sweeter.

Without the internet and instant access to buy anything, you had to order through stuff like magazines or buy from your local comic book stores. It made finding anime and import game stuff such an easter egg. I never knew what kind of Japanese stuff my local comic store would have, and that was definitely a big part of the excitement of going there.

On a related note, I was a huge Sailor Moon fan as a kid (still am) and I always really wanted the SM games they would advertise back there. Grown up me got a few off eBay and it was a really cool feeling to finally be holding them and playing them.

Thank you anon, I thought so too. The covers of Japanese games have always been a big selling point for me because just just look so cool!

I never knew that. Very interesting. Gosh, it would be so cool to be a kid in Japan during the 90s.

I got to play 2 Sailor Moon games as a kid thanks to piracy, i got and still have bootleg carts of the beat 'em up Sailor Moon games on Sega Genesis, and the fighting SuperS game for SNES.

I love them.

Have you ever played the 3DO Sailor Moon game?

I have not, is any any fun? I really like the backgrounds judging from google pictures.

The only ones I've played are the ones in the photo. Little kid version of me would have killed to played SM beat em ups back then.

I haven't got the chance to play the 3DO one, but yeah it looks good.

Playing the beat 'em up game on Genesis was great, I also played through it right when I was watching the series on TV, so perfect timing.
I remember played it all the way through several times with a friend (taking turns because Genesis version is only 1 player).

The SuperS game is a fighting game, similar to the 3DO one apparently. Worth playing, and has all senshi and outer senshi plus chibi usa.

Agreed. That was the highlight of my week... Going to the mall on Friday or Saturday and seeing what FYE had in their comic section or what new stuff Area 51 had. Man, the late-nineties were the best.
