I apologize if these types of threads are frowned upon, but this needs to be done.

What are, at least in your opinion, the "must play" titles of pre-1999? I'm trying to compile a list of games that every man should play at least once in his life, and I could use some help narrowing this down. I realize that I can go anywhere on the internet and find a million results for "must have video games of the 90s", but most of them are clickbait articles with very little substance. I'd rather go straight to the people who don't fuck around and ask for their input.

It can be any genre, for any major system (Nintendo/Sony/Sega/PC). Other than that, my only real criteria is that it be something that can be considered a "timeless classic" or a "must-play title," or something with a special kind of charm that shouldn't be ignored.

If you've enjoyed the shit out of some game that blew away your expectations, or if you've at least played something interesting, please let me know.

This. Their lists are good jumping points. Also you can lurk considering good and underappreciated titles get thrown around all the time here. It's pretty good.

no it doesn't.

most, but not all. Somehow this is important enough it "must be done" but you aren't willing to do the work of sorting the wheat from the chaff? eeeeeey fuck you too buddy.

THe list of must-play pre-1999 is huge, like literally hundreds of games.

Even then its going to vary from person to person. If a guy hates JRPG's then having 50 JRPG's on your list are not "must plays"

Just hang around on this board for like a month if you wanna know about good older games to play. This thread will either derail into two people arguing whether or not the game was actually essential or someone will mention something like Castlevania 4 and another anon will go NUH UH BLOODLINES WAS BETTER then the thread will turn into the millionth Genesis vs SNES thread.

Bloodlines was better though.
