2743106 No.2743106 [Reply] [Original]

Okay. So what's the deal with this game? It's had so many releases, two different titles, multiple translations (both fan and official) and hardtype easytype versions, minor censorship, and re-releases that I honestly don't know where to start.

Simple question, what is the most true-to-the-original (Japanese) release? Is there a translation patch for the original Japanese SNES rom? I want to play this for the first time but have as close to the very first release as possible (not interested in the wacky FF2US translation)

Most people agree that FF2US is better than the original Japanese game. Either because the Japanese version is way too easy or way too hard... I forget which. "True to the original" isn't what you're after in this case because the original simply isn't as good as what we got when the game came stateside.

Play the GBA one, with the music patch if you feel it's needed. Have fun.

Pretty much every version is flawed in some way or another.
>FF2US
Dumbed down, no ATB bars
>FF4 GBA
ATB is bugged to fuck, shit sound (can be patched), too easy
>FF4 PS1
Now Loading...
>FF4 PSP
RPG Maker-tier sprites, same babbymode gameplay as GBA
>FF4 DS
Battles run at like 15FPS, 3D models and voice acting might be a turnoff, includes none of the bonus content from the previous versions

Personally I'd still recommend the DS version in spite of that, as it really does have the best and most challenging gameplay among them. The other ports that are based on it are okay too, although even the PC version still runs battles at such a low framerate that it impacts menu responsiveness. Really, it comes down to either the DS or PSP version. Not much reason to bother with any others.

I don't think you're thinking of the right version.

This "lol loading times" to any and everything PS1 port related is basically shitposting at this point.

What about the actual fucking game, for once?

>> No.2743164

>>2743160
There's no point in playing a version of the game that's almost identical to the SNES game with massive loading times everywhere. The only change is a slightly better translation. DS has the best translation but looks like trash.

I've never heard anyone say this, let alone "most people agree" to it until someone asked this very question yesterday. US is babby version.

It's the DS version's models, textures and 15fps battles running in HD on a single screen.

>Okay. So what's the deal with this game?
tl;dr it's to FF as SEED is to Gundam. Japan loves it to bits, everyone else not as much but it's okay.

>best version
Depends on what you want because it's so chock full of different versions. Not even Ys had so many strikingly different ones.

>True to Japan
Namingway Edition. It has a fixed up translation that's true to form, and restores Japan's stuff to the US one. It's better than the original and the fan translation of the japanese version. Also has a couple of ease-of-life extras that don't effect the gameplay in any way except for a couple spells having combat uses; they can be completely ignored.

>Content
PSP has the most. Even though it's based on the easier GBA release, it makes up for it in postgame with the neat random floor dungeon. It has After Years in the same package, and to this date it's the only one with Interlude.

>Gameplay and visuals
DS. It's harder but take caution if you're wanting a good translation because the dialog in US is the Squeenix Flower Standard. Has mobile and PC ports, both not as good but After Years was remade in the same 3D

He also has a side note elsewhere on the site talking more about how screwed up the fan translation of the Japanese version is. Even some of the original team agree it's not good nowadays.

But the PSP version is better, poorfag.

FFIV: The Complete Collection.

Weird font size and screen-dominating dialog boxes aside, his argument boils down to a few throwaway pop culture gags, and that he doesn't like some of the swearing. I'd be annoyed about the pop shit, but almost all the updated versions have some amount of it anyway (SA, real ultimate power) so I don't much care. I sat through the first hour of four versions of the game last night trying to decide which to play (US, J2E, PSX and GBA) and J2E's differences are negligible. Besides, Kain being a butthurt faggot calling Rosa a whore for preferring Cecil is appropriate because Kain is a piece of shit, fuck that guy.

>> No.2743913 [DELETED]

>>2743495
Later in the main comparison he also talks about how the fan translation accidentally censored itself because they didn't quite know what they were doing, and took some lines wholesale from FF2US.

J2E's differences between it and the official ones should not be negligible. That means it's not doing it's job as a retranslation.

>> No.2743925

>>2743495
>J2E's differences are negligible.
See that's the problem. You're forgetting J2E's purpose back then, to make something more in tune with the originals.

The fact that it is negligible means it's not doing it's job. That's why >>2743358 recommends Namingway instead.

I just don't care for the sprites really, it's personal preference but I think they took a bit too much liberty with them and made it a bit too generic.

God dammit. I dug around in FFII's hacks/translations and didn't see this one. I'm already 7 hours in to the J2E version anyway. I would still have preferred the original size text, too. Interesting as I did read earlier today that it has since been found that FF2 wasn't a direct port of FFIVET, but the other way around.

I'm playing through FF4 PSX right now, the loading is almost unnoticeable outside of starting up a saved game. It definitely didn't get hit with the loading stick as hard as Chrono Trigger did.
