It expands gameplay over space shooters in some really neat ways. It basically is just a slower paced space shooter underwater, but there's totally different gameplay on the surface as you shoot down aircraft and ships dropping depth charges.

Loads of potential but the only title I can think of that really realized it was In The Hunt. The handful of others were basically just space shooters with different art. The sub levels of Metal Slug 3 also hint at how it should be in terms of physics and gameplay imo.

I know. The only underwater shooter on the TG-16 also blows. It's a mystery to me why, the potential is there.

>implying i haven't

that game had a lot of potential but it's about a 7.5/10 game at best

the difficulty is unbalanced. The 5th stage is probably the easiest level in the game and has the easiest boss in the game. Which is why in the Japanese version they shuffled the stages around so that you go through the stages in this order: 1,3,5,2,4. The problem with this is that (1) the "story" of the game doesn't make sense anymore because you're jumping all over the place, and 2) the end-stage stamps you get are fucked up and don't go in order. This just makes the game seem extremely unpolished. it's actually a very easy game overall

The biggest downside to this game though is that some of the bosses are just plain stupid to beat. 3 of them have safe spots where you cannot be damaged

also, i'm not sure how this is triggered, but there are 2 versions of the last boss. The normal one has a longer booster on its final form. The alternate version has a nonexistent booster on its final form. The normal version is easy to beat, but the alternate version takes about 15 minutes to kill with a normal weapon not because it's difficult but because it just takes that many hits. That leaves a shitty taste in your mouth, trust me. I don't know how the alternate version is triggered.. maybe I was playing on hard mode that time

Anyway, this game is kinda typical of Irem games of that time. Beeeeautiful looking but flawed. Irem made a literally perfect game in R-Type, but the games that followed were great-looking but flawed in some way (and those flaws only become apparent once you've put in a lot of time into those games. If you've only played the games casually then all you've seen are the beautiful effects so of course u think they're great games) .. until the guys left Irem to form Nazca and then they started making nothing but perfection (including Neo Turf Masters which is godlike)

>inb4 git gud
t. 1cced the game many times, that's why I know indepth info like this

It's not even close to the best the system has to offer.

Btw, does someone know if footage of In The Hunt's SNES port exists? According to wikipedia a playable demo was shown to the public.

Fuck yeah. I just barely got around to checking out the NGPC library a few days ago and this is easily one of the best games I've ever played even though I suck shit.
