I loved the character designs in that so much.

The 4 characters they used as hidden characters in Matrimelee also made that game so much more sweeter than it already was - even if they were a bit buggy (Jones' call-for-helper move had no hitboxes for example, making it completely safe for evading enemy attacks)

Not OP or >>2741875 but I do definitely understand how to play it. If I were being super generous, I'd move it up to decent. Obviously, once you learn the mechanics it moves up from being "OMGWTF TOO HARD SHIT TIER". The problem for me is that it's a little too easy.
-Enemies have trouble hitting you if you're constantly moving up and down.
-Billy and Jimmy's standing kick stays active for so long that it's easy to bait enemies into walking into it. It also stuns in one hit so you can follow up with grab combo/regrab infinite/cyclone kick for ninjas/nunchucks for bosses. Enemies can't duck it, so it's more consistent than spamming cyclone kicks.
-Billy and Jimmy are completely invincible during a grab, so it's useful for getting enemies to close in without having to worry about projectiles or running jump attacks.
-Chin's standing punches completely decimate all regular enemies and, at worst, trade hits with bosses.
The only real threat to you are the bosses' weird hitboxes and Egypt's shonky platforming.

Assumptions much? I didn't think DD3 on the NES was as good as the first two games. I can clear it without much trouble though since all you need is the Cyclone Spin Kick anyway.

>>2741930
I only left out the Genesis versions as far as major ones are concerned and those were just straight ports of the arcade games. None of them were good though, except for DD1 maybe. I don't particular care enough about the 80s home computers ports that were designed to be played with one button joystick.

>>2741934
Other than having 2-player co-op, the SMS version of DD1 wasn't as good as the NES version due to how they messed the combat mechanics in that version. Combos don't work the same way and the way the jump kicks worked was kinda weird. You can't even grab enemies in the SMS version unless they're near death.

Not really. DD1 was only so-so on the SMS and decent on the Genesis (aside from the crappy chiptune and input lag). DD2 and DD3 on the Mega Drive/Genesis were shitty ports of the arcade versions and DD3 on the arcade was already a mediocre game to begin with.

>one port of a game is inferior because its sequels came out on a different system

Don't mention anything about how SMS version can have more than 2 enemies, and they can actually be different enemies and not two of the same enemy. The larger number of colors on the sprites also helps. Sure, there are flickering issues, but the master system is closer to the original arcade than the NES, and doesn't involve the crummy leveling system or random platforming elements.

>> No.2742671

The only problem with DD1 on genesis is the speed of the enemies, which is fixed with a romhack. Aside from that it actually plays better than the arcade because no slowdowns.

>Don't mention anything about how SMS version can have more than 2 enemies, and they can actually be different enemies and not two of the same enemy.
The SMS version had problems that didn't exist in the NES version, like the fact that the SMS version couldn't have more than one weapon on-screen at a time and the fact that Rowpers couldn't even pick up and throw cardboxes like they did in the AC and NES version. At least the NES version had you fighting against two armed Williams (one with a dynamite and the other with a bat) at a time. Not that it matters that much, since everyone except Abobo and Willy fights the same way.
>The larger number of colors on the sprites also helps.
The SMS version's color palette is too pastel for my liking.
>Sure, there are flickering issues, but the master system is closer to the original arcade than the NES, and doesn't involve the crummy leveling system or random platforming elements.
The SMS version had flatter level designs than the arcade version though. It didn't even have the climbable ladders/fences that were in certain areas.

The NES version is completely different from the arcade, but I think it's a decent game on its own merits, whereas the SMS version is kinda meh aside from the 2-player co-op.

Well, that must mean the original creator intended to be making DD3, it that doesn't imply they had faith in the outsourced version. Maybe time constraints meant that the NES version was easier to get done for them, or more likely, they deemed it more important.

Yeah, it did technically have a a ninja, but you can't forget playing as a king-fu master with a belly-flop-of-death. Cause, more capable character and all that.

It was outsourced cause Technos's arcade division was busy with other projects such as WWF Superstars and Combatribes at the time and apparently there was a huge demand for a third Double Dragon arcade game since the first two games were pretty successful. I'm not sure why they didn't wait until they were over with their other projects before working on DD3.

Oh, arcade division, that makes sense.

Wonder why they didn't instead port the NES version to other systems, if the master system and PC engine were still being supported, those would have been an excellent candidates. But PCE's single controller options were, well, anti-double.

Even a solid port of the NES version to the genesis and PC would have been preferable.

Technos only supported Nintendo consoles until a few years just before they went out of business when they did those Neo-Geo games, along with Popeye's Beach Volley on the Game Gear and Geom Cube on PlayStation.

All those Double Dragon and Kunio ports on Sega and NEC consoles and such were actually licensed versions made by other companies, so Technos themselves probably had little choice in the matter regarding which games they choose to convert.

Acclaim were the ones who produced the Double Dragon 3 port on the Genesis and Game Boy.

I love how people act like game reviewers being biased retards is some sort of new thing that started with Kotaku and IGN, this shit has always been going on. Flip open any EGM and see it for yourself. I swear childhood me wanted to murder Sushi-X.

He complains that there's not enough enemy variety and that it's too old-fashioned, but the 2P co-op is nice (I'm guessing this and Rushing Beat were the only 2P beat-'em-ups on the SFC at the time). The common complaints in the other reviews are that it's too slow-paced, the characters are too small compared to beat-'em-ups, and it's barely an improvement over the 8-bit NES versions.

Famitsu reviews back then could be really harsh if they wanted to.

Double Dragon I on the Famicom got a 31 from Famitsu, which is considered above-average. DD2 only got a 26 though. Not sure how DD3 did.

Too lazy to search this out myself, but: did Famitsu generally have a bias against beat 'em ups? I can see DD1 getting a low score because of comparisons to the arcade version, but DD2... fuck 'em.

>> No.2754779

>>2754219
I don't think they really have any bias against beat-'em ups. Golden Axe on the Mega Drive and Batman Returns on Super Famicom both scored above 30 too. I just don't think they cared about specific genres unless they were RPGs.
