Looking into buying an Ouya for my emulating needs. Just wondering what /vr/'s opinions on it are.

I wanted something to run my retro games on my HDTV, and since the Retron 5 has shoddy build quality, I figured I'd go another route. Looking at some Youtube reviews on the system, it looks pretty decent. And checking eBay, they're pretty cheap. I thought about getting the Nvidia Shield (not the portable one) to connect to my TV, but those things are pretty expensive.

Question is; is the Ouya powerful enough to run NES - Dreamcast roms on my TV?

I dont get why people think they need a dedicated device for emulation. These threads pop up constantly.

Get a shitty old PC or laptop and rig it up to your TV. THATS ALL YOU NEED.

I'll sell you mine, I have everything it came with.

I have a shitty PC and it doesn't run anything beyond SNES too well. Shit, it stutters with some of the SNES games I try to play.

I mean, I could just get another Laptop or something, but I figured it'd be cheaper just to get an Ouya.

I wasn't looking to buy it right now since I don't get paid until next week.

I guess you could say I'm still in the "research" phase.

You asked if it was powerful enough to play NES, then you go and say you wanna play SNES?

Just kill yourself.

Save up for a better laptop instead. You can even get a cheap thinkpad or something that will get you much for your money than an ouya. You don't have to spend a lot but there's no reason whatsoever to buy one of these things.

I don't know anything about an Ouya, but a Nintendo Wii can emulate up to the 5th Gen (PSX, N64 gen, whatever that one is)

I know it doesn't cover dreamcast, however, it does do a lot and they're rather cheap nowadays? Just an option!

The fuck? Do you even read?

I wanted it to be powerful enough to play NES-Dreamcast. SNES falls within that range, moron.

>>2739836
Hmm, yea I DO need to invest in a new laptop...

>>2739837
I actually have a Wii I barely touch anymore. I have no idea how to mod it, though. I was always scared I'd brick it and lose all my saved games.

I would post a guide, but it's been a while since I've done it myself. Go to reddit, and find the wiihacks subreddit? They've got a step by step tutorial anyone can do! And there's ways you can prevent bricking forever depending on your Wii!

If he cant even do a google search for wii modding he is beyond saving. Literally a six year old kid could do the letterbomb hack.

Ouya has a horrible reputation but it seems like it's probably okay as a pure Android device. I paid $20 for a Gamestick and Ouya seems better than that so if say it's probably worth the $30-$40 you'd pay for a Wii. I'd honestly like to see them running some emulators head to head.

Step 1. Pick up a 3-5 year old PC off craiglist.
Step 2. Buy a gamepad
Step 3. Install emulators.

That's as simple as it is.

If you REALLY want to emulate on an ARM processor for some reason you could always pick up a Tegra K1 devboard for 200 bucks.

It can run Anything up to SNES just fine, but it really struggles with the PSone and beyond. I'd suggest pic related, it's a lot more expensive but it works much better.

I literally said in my post that I looked into getting that, but it was too expensive. Thanks for the suggestion though.

>>2739973
To be fair, I haven't looked into Wii emulation in like 4 years or so. I stupidly assumed it would still be complicated.

Still probably going to end up getting an Ouya since the only gripe people seem to have with it is a laptop/wii/PC does the same thing. Only difference is I can get an Ouya for like 40 bucks and have it as a dedicated emulation system that can stay hooked up to my TV.

Plus, the controller looks cool.

I have a Ouya. It emulates NES, SNES, Genesis, gameboy, GBC, and GBA games perfectly fine.

Don't bother with the controller though. It's fucking garbage. Plug a PS3 controller in or like, a Logitech gamepad.

For a hundred bucks it's okay and makes for a decent lazyman's emulation rig. Just don't expect to emulate anything further than what I mentioned

>> No.2740365

The real question is does Ouya have a way of saving a screenshot?

Let's say I'm running a SNES game through it and I'd like to save screenshots as I go. Can it be done?

Same question about other emulation platforms.

Ouya has shit heat dissipation though. Don't bother. For a tiny solid state box, it sure heats up. I swear I could cook a burrito if I cobbled a bunch of them together in a box shape and turned them all on.

Wii. You'll also be able to play Wii and Gamecube games natively.

Of course. There are tons of screen capture programs for Android and I'm relatively sure snes.emu has a "save screen shot" right on the menu. I know pce.emu has it because I was just looking at it.

>> No.2740535

I used the Wii for ages but after frustration with all of the emulator options for SNES (GX is slow as fuck, Retroarch has shitty bugs no one works on) and essentially no PS1 options I recently moved to a HTPC which has worked wonderfully with retroarch and a Wii Classic Controller/DualShock 2 depending on the system. Also runs Netflix etc which is nice.

>> No.2740538

>>2740535
As an extension I think unfortunately the Wii is a dying scene, I still keep it around to play GameCube/Wii games but that's it. Retroarch and other emulators are much more actively developed on Windows, and frankly the Wii is incredibly weak.
