Has anyone else found themselves playing games less and less.
For me, I haven't actually picked up a controller in over 10 years. I still enjoy watching speed runs and (some) let's plays of old game... but I can't bring myself to actually play them anymore.
Actually the last gen I really played was ps2/gc gen.

Growing old sucks.

For me it's to many choices. I have so many fucking games unlike when I was a child that I don't know where to start most of the time.

Childhood was so much easier since I didn't have many options so I'd just play one or two games over and over.

This here really. I have less time these days to play thanks to work, but I still play the shit out of 3rd and 4th gen games whenever I get the chance. God bless living in the age of Everdrives.

I play a lot less than I used to. A lot of the work I do is on the computer, so I tend to not use my consoles or arcade cabs as often since when I do I feel like I am wasting time. Instead I wind up wasting time on the internet since taking quick checks of ebay or here or wherever don't feel quite the same as actually getting off the computer to play games (or even playing games on the computer). I have fallen into the trap of being someone who collects more than he plays, because it is a hell of a lot easier to hop on ebay or Yahoo Auctions and find things to try to win than it is to invest a lot of time into playing games.

In before use emulators.

Have you tried maybe just buying a single game that you are particularly interested in and dedicating to it?
It's not like earlier consoles actually had fewer titles, so just limit yourself like you had to as a kid and dig into a game you actually want to play

Hey /vr/dad, I hope you are comfortable for money, if so then you get to buy all of this expensive retro stuff with your baby boomer salary.

I bought two incredible 4:3 40 inch plasmas from a mid 40s dude on CL. He was selling like 15 different monitors that were all former professional grade shit that when they came out cost between $2,000-16,000. Only reason he was getting rid of them is because he was overhauling his hand built basement arcade for the 5th time.

That is unless...your wife has Retron5ed you. If so RIP in peace my friend.

>disconnecting things everytime I want to play something

Probably because you don't have your shit organized.

Make it easy on yourself.

Buy some tupperware tubs, individually bag all your controllers and cords so its not a fucking tangled mess. Assign 1 tub per system and its related hookups and peripherals.

Then you just rip out the tub for the console you're using, and the console you want, bag everything and put it away, then unbag everything and leave the bags in the bin.

I find if I have all my consoles hooked up I lose focus and can't decide. Where as if I go "I'm going to play some Super Nintendo" it narrows down my library from something like 500 to 40 and thats way more managable.

Honestly most stuff is so much cheaper today than it was when it came out. Even 20 somethings should be able to put together a decent collection, especially with Japanese consoles and flash carts.

The wife hates games and would probably rather there wasn't a single one in the house. But everything is stored tastefully in cabinets with doors/drawers so she can't complain about anything other than the time I spend playing with the kids. The kids and their friends are very happy.

You couldn't be more wrong about this. All of my stuff is extremely organized; I have bins for every console, labeled.

I don't like connecting and disconnecting things because it's a pain, and it wears out the ports. This is why space is a problem; I'd strongly prefer to leave everything permanently hooked up. Since my space is limited, taking stuff out of my closet, hooking it up, playing, putting it back in the closet, etc. is a huge hassle.

I'm trying to find some kind of modular shelving that can potentially solve this, but the biggest issue there is the additional height having a cartridge in the console adds.

I know it's a late response now, but I feel like I should give you some advice. I was once in your position, I worked a very intensive programming job and basically had no time during the work day that I wasn't working on a computer. I couldn't get interested at all in computer games at all after a work day of that, much less weeks and weeks on end. That's when I decided to drop games totally and find a different hobby. I found respite in board games and in reading books, the latter of which was super cheap too because of a good local library.

My advice is try some real-world stuff. Go to the library and get something that sounds interesting, and maybe find some people who do boardgames/tabletop on the weekends and join in for a while. I have had success finding stuff on meetup before, so consider trying that.

It's no big deal that you're not feeling games right now. I spent 18 months at that job and didn't touch a game until well after I'd finished there and found another job that didn't drain me so much. Games will still be there, ready to be played. Just come back to them when you're ready.

Classic Game Room (Mark has a pleasant speaking voice and shows off the cool weird things you might not know about otherwise)

Ross's Game Dungeon (Another good voice and he likes showing off random computer games, nice long videos that give pretty good depth on what you can expect)

Game Center CX (hardly unknown, personally I just enjoy watching an old Japanese comedian struggle with hard games. His behavior, the people around him, and the side segments really give the show a great amount of charm)

Hope you find something you like out of those posts.

are you talking like a bin that has audio/video ports and power outlets inside of it, and also has cables going out of it (to connect to wall power/the TV) so that when the system is in the bin, it's all hooked up and ready to go, and you only need to swap the plugs coming out of the bin itself to switch systems?

That sounds complicated but badass, if any handy folks ever decide to try that then I'd love to see it in action.

I'm 35 and I play on consoles less and less. But that's only because I can't afford to keep up with the new consoles, and I've mostly outgrown the types of games that can be played on the old ones. You have to use newer platforms, or old platforms that haven't died out yet (like the PC), if you need new types of game designs to keep you interested.

I suppose my main 4chan gaming board should be /v/, then, but... like I said, I'm an adult who has unfortunately outgrown shallow kid stuff. 4chan doesn't really have a video game-focused board for someone like me.

Anyway I haven't lost interest in gaming--it's just that the game industry hasn't developed as fast as my ability to appreciate game design has done. It's not just about me getting older. If game development in general were to mature faster than I did, then I wouldn't be having this problem. Likewise, if new hardware platforms and game design concepts didn't come out frequently, then teenagers might find themselves losing interest in gaming, even while they were still teenagers. Who wants to play Atari 2600 Q*bert for a decade?

It's not us. It's the industry AND us.

I rarely want to play a game by myself these days, but I often play them with friends. I guess I just lucked out and ended up having close friends who have the same hobby I do. Even if it's not a multiplayer game we'll just pass the controller every death/level/whatever, the game is often more just something to talk about or jumpstart a conversation about game design. Or just background noise to a normal conversation if the game isn't too intense.

But yeah, I rarely feel the drive to play when I'm on my own despite being crazy about games when I was younger. I guess it's for the best, it makes it easier for my solo time to be spent in a productive way unless I fuck up and spend it all on anime and comics like I usually do.

So I don't game erryday, I usually go months without and then do a binge of a few days/week or so (and post on /vr/ too.)

>>2730952
I've just cut my choices down to a shortlist of games. Used to do the whole "fullset of every game on a system" thing, now I just have 5-10 games I like and I usually end up prioritizing one more than the rest.

like, these days, 90% of what I play is
>Doom
>Quake
>Shadow Dancer
>OutRun
>KOF98, 2000, 2002 with friends
>Ridge Racer

I've a shitton more that I could play, but then I don't feel like playing games when I think about how many other things I could be playing, or when I think about how much time it'd take me to play some of the games I want to.

So, most of these are games that I'll be able to throw on and enjoy right out of the gate, and they're all pretty much my favorites. Shadow Dancer is like 30 minutes long and really satisfying to play. OutRun is less than 5 minutes long. I can just throw on KOF and have a match or two with some friends. If I want some quick thrills, I can throw on Doom or Quake and start some random level. Ridge Racer is something I can just fire up and do time attack in.

When you go to a bullfight there is a lot of things going on at once, first, music, there is a live band playing pasodobles, and every pasodoble has his meaning in the "corrida", some make you feel happy, other can make you feel excited, sad, etc, every actor in the arena is dressed in a spanish medieval fashion, and thats something you don't see in a public act so often, and the matador is dressed in one of the most beautiful thing i have ever seen, you need to see it in person to understand, is a really intrincate suit made with golden thread (made of pure gold), it looks kind of gay, but thats the thing, its supposed to be feminine, because this is a fight of death vs life, masculinity vs femininity, light vs darkness, even the arena itself is fighting, thats why there are two sections, Sol and sombra (sun and shadows) and yo go to bullfights when the sun is in the middle of the scenery, there is a fight of every power in existence in the universe happening in the same place., is not just "killing an animal", is an ancient ritual and this is not even a fraction of what this ritual is about, there are entire books that talk about it, but i get why the majority of people doesn't like this, but is the same as a lot of old costumes around the world.

I see, that's actually interesting.

My problem with bullfights isn't that they kill an animal, it's that they make the bull suffer for way too long and the matador isn't fighting him alone, there's other people around who help the matador throwing lances at the bull, and on top of that, I've read that in most bullfights (especially official ones) throw the bull to the arena completely drugged so that he's already weak and confused and can't fight back properly.

I understand the whole scenery and symbology and how that's all interesting, but at this point, I'd rather see a whole theatrical representation of that, use a fake bull.
I have no interest in seeing a "fight" where one of the sides is severely handicapped. I feel the matador has no real merit.

I may be wrong and maybe not all bullfights are like this. I know some illegal bullfights in south america don't use drugged up bulls, but that also means they're VERY dangerous and most of the "fight" simply consists of the guy trying not to die to the bull. A Matador on a big bullfight like the one you're describing (dressed in gold, etc) doesn't really put the matador in danger, unless he has very very bad luck and the bull can somehow hurt him even with all the handicap.

Also where are you from?

>> No.2741779

>>2741767
Im from Guadalajara, Jalisco, is a Province of México with a lot of french and spanish offspring, thats why that kind of traditions are strong here, and we actually have one of the most serious bullfight rings in all Mexico, Spain and France, that means: big 6 years old bulls, nice horns, great picadores and banderilleros that doesn't hurt the bull too much, matadores usually get destroyed here and a lot of "big names" usually decline their acts here because of that.

I don't really have the time anymore to play games that require you to invest some time to get something out of it (say, you have to learn mechanics, gameplay is slow, or requires a lot of waiting/walking), but those are the only games I enjoy. There's nothing inherently wrong with having several games going at the same time but it sounds like you really have trouble finishing. Even then, honestly if you get sick of the game then stop playing.

Personally I have several games going at a time because different games are better for different times/places/conditions. I'm not going to play something that requires precision jumps on public transport or when I'm tired but an RPG might be fine. I remember absolutely adoring Wind Waker. For a lot of it, it was one of my favorite games ever. But then I got to the tower at the end where you have to go through mini versions of earlier dungeons and re-fight bosses. That was boring though and for about a month every time I sat down to play something I thought maybe I should just go finish it, but I never did.

I'm only 46 and a half so maybe not as old as you but I continue to work hard to accomplish important things and my dick still works. Can't say I ever felt this desperation you refer to when I was younger.
