Yeah this thing is apparently getting a remake after 16 years of post interplay.

So Descent thread anyone?

Good news: It's a licensed Descent game, with 6DoF and all that fun stuff.

Bad news: The studio is ran by ex-Star Citizen guys and is following the exact same funding scheme post kickstarter.

The games in playable alpha right now but only available to kickstarter backers at the $200 level or whoever's willing to pay a subscription fee.

>remake
Fuck that noise

the first couple previews hinted at larger locations and less deep tight mine navigation. Basically, they're aiming to make it look good, instead of making it play right, the usual.

>Descent thread
First game was brilliant, especially when you used it with a 3D joystick. On keyboard it was playable, but overwhelming.
Second game had some nice improvements, but frankly, the guide bot sucked. It got in the way and took away from having to actually navigate the mines.
Third game was an insult. Everything about it was wrong.

I'm expecting this new game to be 3.5, at most.

Seeing the PS1 re-dump torrent, I decided to queue up Descent 1 and Maximum. How are they on PS1?

yup big descent fan here
1 and 2 were great 3 was ehh
the new "official" looks really disappointing to me ive never had a huge interest in the multiplayer side of the games though
>>2729248
this too it is pretty dodgy imo and they only have interplays permission to use the brand name the actual iconic pyro gx is still owned by parralax (volition now) there is also sol contingency, geocore, talon and sublevel zero that just released yesterday and its pretty neat
>>2729431
no point playing the ps1 versions you can even play maximum and alot of other custom maps it's not doom level of custom maps but there is some great stuff in the mission database
there are 2 sourceports for d1 and 2 nothing for d3 though
>rebirth
retard proof pretty faithful to the original
>d2x-xl
lots of options (GRAFIX) kinda bloated harder to setup
multiplayer works flawlessly 4 player co-op is just too much fun

skip to about 2 mins in to get past opening fluff

it's a rouge-lite 6dof that's pretty neat looking, not sure if it's that fun though

Same reasoning the Descent Oldfags are using to justify their wanting of any feature that didn't debut in descent '95 removed.

Currently the community is shitting itself because the game's ships feature a afterburner boost similar to Descent 3, causing the autistic to foam at the mouth that the game plays different from Descent II because of it.

>> No.2730554

>>2730549
>the game plays different from Descent II
thing is, Descent 1 was an actually good game, nailed all of the core aspects. Descent 2 had a few good ideas, but almost too much junk included, still the same core. Descent 3 was just a shit game, with junk nobody needed, and actually useful things removed.
So when people complain about Descent 3 things making a comeback, they are just not interested in another Descent 3. It's already bad enough that this stinker managed to be associated with Descent at all.

>wanting of any feature that didn't debut in descent '95 removed
What you don't understand is the problem of feature bloat. There's such a thing as too much clutter. Descent 1 was tight, focused. It had everything it needed, and nothing else. That is key. Adding junk to that just produces noise. Removing parts of it damages the game.

>> No.2730589

>>2730554
Yeah, There's a lot about Descent 3 that was junk and didn't need to be there.

The EMD weapon comes off the top of my head as it was so poor that no one used it. The Black Shark missile was as pointless as ever when it wasn't lagging servers it was crashing them. The napalm gun was great for trolling but not for doing anything useful. Having multiple ships is neat but giving the Tank trifusion that's a one hit kill from 110 shields was as broken as ever. etc. etc. etc.

Feature bloat is one thing but we're literally arguing that the ships in D:U should not spawn with an AB for no other reason that in Descent II it was a powerup. Literally no depth to an argument more then "Descent 3 had it, therefore it's bad".

>On keyboard it was playable, but overwhelming.

I only ever play it on the keyboard, its crazy fun that way and I like it.

>> No.2730628

>>2730623
I played it with keyboard for quite some time, made good progress and everything. It is definitely playable. However, the moment I ever played it on a Sidewinder 3D Pro was a revelation. Suddently I wasn't (quite well) juggling keys anymore, I was controlling a Pyro. It felt like I had the controls of the Pyro itself in my hand, like this was how it was supposed to be controlled. All movement, and a lot of the core functions can be mapped to the stick. Never looked back ever since.

Any interest in a D3 server? Id love to get a game of monsterball in for old time sakes.

>> No.2731059

>>2730623
Same, I started playing Descent on a keyboard and I felt like I lost some sense of precision when I switched over to joystick. Almost all the good players I knew online back then said they were keyboard-only too.

Wrong context. The game is Descent with roguelike nonsense attached. Even if the roguelike aspects of this game were "the point" since the beginning, its beginning is another game, which was not a roguelike.
