More detail doesn't help when the only thing it does is reveal how crappy your art is.

What's wrong with Contra's art? Are you retarded?

Not him but I never liked the color pallets used in the arcade contras. They look washed out.

This entire "getting lost in enemy bases" shit was terrible.
And it had less levels, too. Sorry, there's a reason why noone remembers the arcade version.

I like the Famicom port of TwinBee over the arcade original.

It's clunkier than the NES one (jumping and diagonal aiming for example), and the weird animations didn't help (jumping again). Also the music arrangements are a bit boring compared to the NES one.

>> No.2728824

>>2728718
Yes, those people possess what we call common sense. The arcade's jumping sucked and it was half as long overall.

>> No.2728832

I like the arcade contras, the only problem is the weird faux-analog aiming. Also they are shorter than the NES games but that can be a good think for replayability.

Super Contra has a pretty badass OST.

It's an emulation issue.

Seriously, most Konami games have that issue in MAME.

There is literally only one way to go at every screen.
And it STILL has a map at the top of the screen.
How the fuck do you get lost in that?

>> No.2729138

Bionic Commando was also better on the NES than the arcade version. Controls are clunky as hell on the arcade version. Even in the Capcom Classics compilations the controls suck.

>> No.2729378

What gets me in the arcade versions is how:
>aim diagonally
>bullets slowly sweep up until they hit the diagonal

Just feels totally fucking dumb - on the NES you aim and shoot and you instantly fire in that direction. Also:
>jump
>guy does some retarded air cartwheeling bullshit

In the NES version you're a tightly packed ball of somersaulting death that can easily fit between incoming bullets. Wayyy too much hitbox in the arcade version.

The final thing and probably the icing on the cake:
>vertical monitor
>horizontally scrolling game

Don't fucking even.

Arcade Contra is a great game, but the NES version has more color, extra stages, and more up-tempo music. I'd say it's an improvement.

Is that collection worth it? I keep looking at it but the game lineup doesn't really look that great. I'm not sure what they're defining "classic" as, and I don't want to insult genuinely good games, but most of that stuff on there I've never even heard of and just from youtube doesn't look very interesting. It looked like a lot of shooters.

>> No.2730231

This has got to be bait, but anyway

Final Fight 3 is bad

2-3 enemies on screen (if you ask "so what? What's the big deal" then you know nothing about beat'em ups)

Slowdowns

It's merely an average game.

The NES Contra was a more fleshed out experience. The Arcade Contra is too short (like only three stages long) and can be cleared in around ten minutes (give or take), the bosses were underwhelming (I'll take the alien statue from the NES version over another sensor) and having Rapid Bullets and Barrier show up only when you have the peashooter is bullshit.

Super Contra is GOAT though.

>Seriously, most Konami games have that issue in MAME.
Contra's emulation on MAME is kinda fucked up. The rolling mines during those 3D base segments always move towards the corner when they should be spread out. Apparently it has something do with the copy protection scheme that was never probably deciphered.

Devastators also suffer from similar issues.

>> No.2730312

>>2730297
That's odd, considering the MAME dev team marked it as "working".

Not really. When you load the game on MAME (I tried out version 0166), it says "one or more ROM/CHDs are missing").

I appreciate your love for FF3 and am happy you enjoy it, but I have to side with the other anon, it's the weakest of the series. None of the enemies are memorable at all. Lucia is just okay, and Dean is freaking weird. I didn't play it until recently though, so maybe I'm biased since I love FF2 the best since I played it as a kid.

Weird, doesn't say anything like that for me.

Maybe because I modded out the OK prompts, but it should still be displayed in the game list, right?

Contra works on MAME, it just isn't emulated accurately.
