Yo /vr/

Can we get a GB/GBC recommendation thread?

I'm actively scouting out old gems to play, and the GBC was always one of my favorites. I just finished survival kids and am seriously stoked for more.

Thirding this. Ghost Babel is legitimately incredible.

What kinds of games do you like OP? I'm a pretty big fan of FF Legend, but it's not everyone's bag.

Metal Walker is another weird but cool little RPG with an interesting battle system

Anythings fine honestly, I'm looking to try the best the GB has to offer.

To sum up a list, I've played:

Pokemon R/B/Y/G/S/C
Pokemon Pinball
Pokemon TCG
Links Awakening
Oracle of ages/Seasons
Metroid II
Kirby Dreamland
Atlantis: The Lost Empire
Shantae
Ghost Babel
Survival kids

And a bunch of ports like Battleship and Asteroids

I would recommend Dragon Warrior 1+2 and 3, those were both really good. FF Legend obviously, as well as Legend 2. Legend 3 is decent, but more of a standard RPG where as the first two have early versions of the SaGa system.

Harvest Moon on GBC was a lot of fun if you're into farming sims and cuteness

Legend of the River King 1 and 2 are also personal favorites. Very relaxed feeling to them, but an interesting fishing "combat system"

Pokemon Puzzle League. If you like Tetris, PPL is a really good version of a similar puzzler called Panel de Pon and is excellent with tons of features and modes.

Gargoyle's Quest is really good

Lufia is pretty great

Tomb Raider. I only tentatively recommend this one. I had a lot of fun with it, but many didn't at all. I'm also a big TR fan. It feels like a weird blend of Tomb Raider and 2D Prince of Persia. There's a lot of back tracking and many areas feel very similar, but somehow that never bothered me.

The Harry Potter games
Hamtaro - Ham Ham Unite
Wario 2 and 3 (ok those are pretty popular actually, but I didnt see them mentioned here yet)

I WAS going to say something about this, but didn't.

The HP games are pretty good. I think I held off because while I like the HP sorcerer's stone game, I preferred the GBA version, and since we get in trouble for that around here, I held off.

The GBC version could have at least added a Quidditch part, but oh well. The first be is still awesome.

I feel like some people might avoid them thinking theyre just more shovelware, but for some reason theyre so much fun to play. Hamtaro is like that too.

I like the GBA version better as well, but the GBC version still is pretty solid in my opinion.

>how close to traditional SMT is it
It has a lighter atmosphere but story is pretty cool still. A bit too easy though, so dont expect much on that side. There are two versions each one having a different MC, representing the chaos/order routes.
Oh, and the main system of getting new monsters is negotiating, not auctions. There are some minigames and quests where you get monsters too. Still a pretty fun game imo.

First of all, the GBC is a beautiful 8-bit system. It has a color plaette as big as the SNES.
And second, this is only a theory, this was the last resort for pixel artists. By the time the GBC came out 3D was in full swing. Everything artists learned to do wasn't needed anymore. At least no in home consoles, so they turned to the Game Boy Color.
But that is only my theory. I can't back it up. I probably could by tracking the credit history of pixel artists and look if they actually went from SNES to GBC, but I am too lazy.
But as a matter of a fact a lot of talented people worked on the later and bigger GBC games.

>> No.2722692

>>2722663
I'm not a pixel artist, and don't know the history of the system and developers, but I love its graphics from a technical view. The huge system palette, paired with the seemingly "low" per tile restrictions allowed for a lot of creativity, artists trying to "beat" the system. Creativity often comes from restricted environments, not just on consoles, but even outside of computers. write poems with a limited number of syllables or avoiding certain letters, compose music from a given number sequence, make a movie without sound, or in this case, drawing with restrictions on color density, but not total palette. It's a shame that systems fall out of fashion, because frankly, I think the GBC has a lot to offer still.

because it got a bit lost in my rambling: In a way the SNES provides "too much" freedom, if you will. You got so many colors, virtually no limits on the palettes, for backgrounds or sprites, you can get away with automatically digitizing artwork and other boring stuff. Artists interested in pixelation love the constraint, as it's the foundation of their entire craft

Obelix, vey well executed platformer, that looks and controls good and sounds even better.

Ninja Taro, overlooked action-adventure. Biggest problem is the slow walking speed, everything else is fine.

it also let you play with up to 3 characters, had a more organized battle interface, a bestiary, more equipment and more sidequests. The only bad things about it were that some areas of the castle were trimmed down and the Forbidden Forest was pretty shitty compared to SS. And the final boss battle was a fucking joke. Getting some monochrome GB games soon and trying to decide what to play them on.
The only hardware I own already is some GBAs. (original, front-lit SP, and back-lit SP).
I was figuring I'd just use the back-lit SP but I'm wondering if getting a GB Pocket would be better.

The GBP has a bigger screen (relative to the size of the GB area on a GBA screen) and I see people saying the back-lit SP screen having a low response time (ghosting). But the that's only ever mentioned in comparison to the front-lit SP, which I don't think I want to use due to the overall look of the screen.

So I'm left wondering how the ghosting on a back-lit SP compares to the ghosting on a GBP.
