About to play Super Mario Brothers for the Nintendo Entertainment System for the first time. Anything I should know going in?

it is the only Mario game in which it is important to get every coin you can get, lives are rare, there are a few hidden one ups, some cases in which you can get a one up for throwing a turtle shell, running to follow it, and see it kill many enemies, most lives will come from getting as many coins as possible.
It is hard for modern standards, it doesnt have any continue unless you do a trick (hold down A when they return you to the start screen after losing, then start a new game and you will be back at the world in which you left IIRC)

But for me beating the game for real means with no continues.

There are many warp zones that let you skip much of the game, but I think it may make things harder since it is possible to reach the last stages with a good number of lives if you dont warp.

I wish more people would go into games completely blind. There are a few games where they fuck you over because you didn't know a few things beforehand but they are not so common and nothing beats the complete blind experience.

you can go above the screen, this leads to warp pipes in the second level of the game.

if you learn how to run backwards you can go through walls because the collision box for mario is dodgy in the first game.
