>find out there's a spiritual successor to this game being worked on and coming out soon
>it's made by the same team
>Morimoto is actually directing the game, after his last job designing a game almost a decade ago with VP2
>Gotanda and Sakuraba also working on it
>mfw seeing the artstyle

I just can't believe this game is actually being made. It's probably gonna be great gameplay-wise from everything I've seen and read, and just the pedigree, but the aesthetics and weird doujin-tier character models make it feel kind of cheap.

I should just be thankful it's coming out at all though. NA release date when?

That's what people should keep in mind when asking for MUH SEQUELS. Even if they used the same art style it would still feel weird.

I saw that a week or two as well. Disappointed no one was really talking about it.
I think the art style's a bit iffy too but I'm just glad a game like this is being made again. If confirmed for a western release I might have to get a Vita.

I wonder if there's a lot of excitement around it in Japan.

VP was never that big here, but over there the original game alone sold 700k copies, which is pretty amazing for a 2D game on PS1 just in Japan. That's why I'm surprised Squeenix hasn't done anything with the IP after the DS game.

I hope I won't have to import it.

I don't think it will come over, but considering Sony wanted to localize as many JRPG as possible it might be a thing, I'm also hyped about the new SaGa game which this time is not a PS4 shared title but a Vita only exclusive, lots of good games this TGS, I'm pretty happy.

Thanks for reminding me that VP:Hrist will never be a thing asshole ;_;

I know it's not retro, but is the second game worth powering through?
I love the first with all my heart, but the second is really lame from what ive played of it.

>> No.2715314

>>2715286

It's a pretty different game, and the story takes more of a back seat and shits all over the previous game's plot, but yes, it's absolutely worth playing through at least once.

I know some people who liked the first game didn't enjoy the sequel that much, but I think they're both great in their own ways. VP2 has one of the best gameplay and battle systems of any JRPG I can think of. It's a pretty short game anyway. I've replayed it almost a dozen times, and it was worth it every time. So much replay value and challenge.

>> No.2715325

>>2715286
It is, the cast is nowhere as good as the first one and there's a really, really lame plot twist by the end but it's otherwise a good game.
Also, you push Odin's shit in so it automatically becomes a must play for those who played the first one.

I never played the PS1 version, just the PSP one (which I hear made some actual improvements?), but I don't know, I got as far as the first act or so and had no real interest in playing.

My complaint was how it felt very much like a weird linear RPG experience. You were working against the time for the most part and there was no real sense of exploration. It was all based around finding dead guys, and maybe a side dungeon here or there. I don't know, got as far as the whiny archer kid and stopped.

Yep, it's a game of trial and error and your first time playing you're pretty much guaranteed to run into the bad ending. As for the turn limit (it's not time based), you can see some extra character development scenes and gain items if you visit some towns ahead of time. But nothing major. There are two missable side dungeons like you've mentioned. I don't think you're supposed to figure it out without a guide but it's no big deal if you miss out on it unless you're going for the best ending.
tl;dr just read a guide for the good ending.

What? There are some dungeons you can't play on hard just so you know.

Should have at least 2 play throughs to get the 2 main ending at least. Just do Hard 2nd so you can do the Seraphic Gate properly.

Some dungeons are only available on Hard, like most of the flame gem ones.

Also Hard is just way way better than the other modes... and the difficulty is basically no different.

>> No.2716054

Not who you quoted, but that's why you play both. There are dungeons that are Normal + Easy only, and there are dungeons that are Hard only.

Plume was pretty mediocre gameplay wise. Story wasn't that bad though.

>I never played the PS1 version, just the PSP one (which I hear made some actual improvements?)

The only improvements in the PSP version are:

>slightly improved translation
>it's portable (but so is the PS1 version if you know how)
>weird CG cutscenes (not really an improvement)

Everything else is worse. Worse inventory management, worse control scheme, worse graphics, worse load times, worse slowdowns. It's a pretty mediocre port developed by TOSE. The original PS1 version is the still the way to go if you want the best experience.

Also I wouldn't call it linear. From the beginning you can fly pretty much everywhere you want, you don't have to complete a lot of dungeons or bosses, you have tons of branching paths, multiple endings, the story varies from playthrough to playthrough...

There's almost always a better recommended path, and some events you have to go to at a certain time but that's about it.

>> No.2716605

>>2716054
Are the dungeons in normal/easy even worth playing, though? Do they really warrant an entire separate playthrough?

>> No.2716820

>>2716605

The game is fairly short when you know what to do, and it's designed to be played multiple times.

You shouldn't think of it as "oh they lock dungeons behind multiple playthroughs so I have to play it again?", you should think of it as "this game is designed to be played multiple times and the different dungeons just add more variety to each playthrough".

>> No.2716869

>>2716605
There are 4 or 5 dungeons not available on hard, but the one that sticks out to me is Forest of Woe, but I have a boner for ice forest landscapes.

And like this anon said, >>2716820, playing this game shouldn't be a chore. If if feels like a drag to replay for new content, then this game isn't for you.

>> No.2716885

>>2716869
>If if feels like a drag to replay for new content, then this game isn't for you.

It might just be a matter of conditioning too.

People get so used to modern AAA games that are designed to be played just once, or they have hundreds of games on Steam so they'd rather just play a game once for completion's sake and move on to another one because they have so many. People who play a lot of JRPGs also get into that mindset since a lot of those games are really long and designed to be played just once.for the story. Who wants to play a game like Xenogears twice? yeah I know some people do

You get the same issue with people who download a bunch of ROMs and they have a hard time finishing anything, let alone replaying it.

You just have to get out of that mindset.

>> No.2716929

I was going to do a Hard playthrough of this, but I decided to wait until I can play the PSP version instead, because I want the undub.
