SO YOU WANT TO PLAY SOME PINBALL FAGGOT?

First you gotta have some things to play it with.

If you want some real deal pinball, https://pinside.com/pinball/map/where-to-play

If you can't go to any of those for any reason, there's pinball simulators.

http://pinballarcade.com/ is a widely popular one that simulates a bunch of classic tables but you either have to pay out the nose for DLC or torrent the damn thing.

http://vpuniverse.com/index.php/index.html is another one, requires a bit of fucking around but once you get it running you get all the free pinball you could ever want

Now there's some extra doohickeys if you need something extra.

NES pinball is decent, nothing spectacular, but certainly not mediocre either. It was either this one or Rollerball which had numerous extra flippers, and I always like tables with extra flippers beyond the bottom ones, it feels like there's more control that way.

I'm one of those guys from the past thread who haven't ever played a real pinball game, by the way. I will some day though.

I know there was a Pokémon themed pinball game for the Gameboy, but was there ever an actual physical table? I mean, Japan is probably lousy with all kinds of pachinko machines made on a Pokémon license, but I figure, Pokémon was so INCREDIBLY big in the late 90's/early 2000's, so it seems to me that maybe there could have been a table (not that pokémon isn't still big). Pinball is an American institution yes, but it was illegal in many American cities for decades up until the mid 1970s. The American pinball companies thrived on marketing their games to europe and other countries. Having an American theme was a big draw in Europe and elsewhere as USA was always considered the home of the best table manufacturers.
Europe had pinball companies like Playmatic and Zaccaria among others.

Sega Japan was producing its own pinballs locally for two short periods of time; 1971-1973 and 1976-1979. The 1970s were the golden age of Japanese-made pinballs. Up until that time, most of the pinballs were made in the USA and the prices were very high. In a typical amusement centre it would cost ¥50 per game for American-made pinballs. This was simply not affordable for most Japanese at that time.

As a result, Sega Japan started to produce a series of electromechanical pinballs in 1971. The price of Sega pinballs was only ¥30 per game, and so these became very popular in Japanese society.

Really? Pinball video games are good? I've played some but I always felt that part of the appeal of pinball was seeing the entire board/table.

I've played a limited number of pinball video games and other than Space Cadet Pinball on Windows (Which I very much enjoyed), they all do the stupid half screen scrolling thing.

I've become more than a bit charmed by the nuances of Nintendo's launch title pinball on the nes. I don't know what it is, but I played the game for fucking hours when I picked it up. There's so much weird shit going on, like your flippers going invisible when you hit 10000 points. Today, just for shits and giggles, I gave the Vs. Arcade version a whirl, and now I'm wishing I had a real Vs. cabinet for this one, or at least a NES conversion reproduction. All those extras are so nice that the nes version feels like a pale prototype. This stuff fascinates the shit out of me.

Please tell me I'm not crazy, but from the games I've played, Pinball Arcade has RNG physics.

Lemme explain, out of ten games, nine I have are godawful because it either goes straight down the middle or falls off to the sides, but the one game I had in those ten games is phenomenal even for Leaderboard standards.

I don't think it is an overrated table. Looking at the top 100 tables on pinside and I see a lot of shitty tables ranked higher than creature up there but at least you have reasons for not liking it.

As it is my all time favorite table though, let me offer some counterpoints to yours...
>Move Your Car is probably the easiest challenge in pinball history
Getting your car started isn't terribly difficult but you still need to hit the ball up there between the ramp and snack bar. The hard part is maximizing the score for it and being able to hit it up there quickly and consecutively.
>Snackbar is so full of random shite outside that its near impossible to hit
I don't fully understand this but snackbar can definitely be a hard shot if you are using the right flipper. Try backhanding it up the ramp to get to your left flipper for an easier shot.
>Hologram, the "WOW" factor of the table pops up for two seconds
Personally I find it is a really cool gimmick that doesn't interfere with the gameplay and fits with the art style and theme quite well.
>Larger gap
It sucks when it drains but I think this adds to the difficulty of the table and tests your nudging skills.
>Not based on the ACTUAL FUCKING MOVIE
Come on, if you have played it you know its suppose to be a cheesy drive-in movie joke.

>> No.2741678

>>2741643
>Not based on the ACTUAL FUCKING MOVIE
This again?
It is about the movie, it's also about GETTING to the movie by way of a classic 50's drive-in movie experience. It's a theme within a theme, after you rack up your points you start the movie then you're rescuing your chick from the creature, there's your mode based on the movie itself. It's pretty fucking ingenious the way it incorporated 50's teen rock n roll drive in culture with a licensed movie of the era.
There are shit-tons of just straight up movie licensed tables, CFTBL actually did something original and unique.
It's a fucking blast to play.

The Shadow might also but Creature definitely has the larger gap.

The rules are fairly cryptic. The bonus carries over but can reset to 2x from 6x since it also spots a FILM letter. FILM completed in sequence grants 8 million bonus. Start 2-ball multiball and you've got to find the Creature then rescue the girl then increase jackpots by spiraling around the vortex and somehow eventually get to Super Jackpots in the (snackbar?)

It's hard to tell where the FILM shots are on the table. You can cheese F by blowing slowly past the skill shot down to the left flipper. All sorts of things like that.

Lots going on in the game.

>> No.2742794

>> No.2743284

>>2742792
You can skillshot F by watching KISS light up and plunging back all the way at the right time. You should probably always do this on the first ball but if I mess up with spelling FILM in order I usually just just go for lighting PAID instead regardless of if I have L.

Snackbar is the hardest or most dangerous to get. For those not aware, you are trying to light all 4 blue targets in front of the snackbar scoop. Hitting pop bumpers will cycle which ones are lit and shootings the scoop will automatically light one. The scoop is definitely the safest but is hard to hit with the right flipper so I'll hit the targets on the left if they both aren't lit, otherwise I'll backhand it up the right ramp to the left flipper for the scoop.

Fyi pro pinball has such good flipper physics it is very much transferable to real life, I play real machines every weekend and pro pinball in the week it makes a lot of difference. It isn't just about learning rules ffs do you even know any of the fundamental flipper skills? Stop being a clueless bastard.

That's nice you like pro pinball so much but flipper skills are basic and even then they vary from table to table. So yeah, I still think learning the rules to a table is more valuable then practicing your flipper skills on a video game.

A place I frequent here in Sydney has nothing but Stern tables, the first time I walked in I was excited to see the LotR table due to its reputation but I find myself playing and enjoying the other Sterns more.
The Star Trek LE is absolutely beautiful and feels solid and well made. The best table Stern has produced?
I think Spiderman is a great table and better than Rings.
Metallica I didn't like at first despite being a fan, but it's grown on me and I think playing the LE improved my opinion of it.
X-Men, another that I disliked but with time grown to really enjoy.

Maybe because I was never a Tolkien fan or something. I know I'm being harsh on it but it has such a high rep and I can't get into it and it does feel like another "cheap Stern"

Not him but I would consider quality and good craftsmanship to be basically the same thing. Originality could be applied to the theme (so not stern) but also table layout, toys, or other gimmicks that haven't been seen before. The lack of cradle separation tools and how easy the ramp shot is to make on Frankenstein is what drives me to look deeper on how TPA works, what the comparison shows me is I wasn't executing poorly to get the clean break but rather I got the bad break by chance.

Some tables (in real life) are harder to post past with if not impossible.

Maybe step away from the microscope and don't worry too much about the leaderboards and just focus on your PRs.

Irregular behavior with post passing being done quickly with both flippers up, back and forth:
BK2K you can do it sometimes on the left flipper, briefly pausing before passing helps
Black Hole from the left just goes up often
Champion Pub same deal as BK2K but on the right flipper, less frequent
CV see Champion Pub
Co1812 see Champion Pub
CFTBL don't know if its just me but acts like black hole on the left flipper too sometimes
Diner opposite problem, often a post pass rolls up then over the flippers on both sides
El Dorado just as bad as BK2K on the right flipper, cant pass into a trap at all
Firepower cant post pass into a trap on either side, was this true in the past?
Flight 2K see Champion Pub
JunkYard right flipper passes it further, majority of the time it rolls over the flipper
LCA right flipper wont pass it as reliably as the left one
MM see LCA, but worse.. camera looks tilted[i.imgur.com] too by looking at the flippers
MB I don't think post passing was ever reliable on this table
PotO see Champion Pub
P*B can't pass from the right, just goes up.. pausing helps (J*B was fine, lol)

Ripleys similar to monster bash, passes from the right happen to go into the slings
Safe Cracker left flipper cant pass into a trap reliably
Space Shuttle can't pass from the left
ST:TNG wont clear the right flipper when passed from the left occasionally
TotAN right flipper cant pass it unless you pause briefly
Taxi wont clear the left flipper when passed from the right occasionally
Tee'd Off see Taxi
T2 occasionally on the right side it'll only travel up a bit, not a troublesum problem
TZ passing it to the right always goes up the inlane and over the flipper

if half the tables act exactly the same I'd assume it's intended, some of these that don't do the assumed intended behavior have similar behaviors so I'd assume it was copied&pasted that way.

Why have one flipper post pass 100% but the other doesn't? Just reeks of bad QA to me.

I would be happy if the assumed intended guaranteed post pass was removed and replaced with the cradle separation tools (also helps with backhand setups) the players need on all tables.

Well there is your problem right there. If you're not letting the ball come to a complete stop how do you expect to consistently pass? And while it seems you have looked into this far more than I have, I can guarantee you there isn't a difference between left and right flippers which makes me doubt that there is actually any real issue here.

I've been leisurely working on a pinball style game. A mix between pong and pinball really, where you either play with another player cooperatively, or by yourself controlling both paddles (left and right). I used to play more pinball when I was a kid. Never got huge into it, but still want to see this idea through, and since this seems like the most knowledgeable place to ask on 4chan, I was curious if you guys have any ideas on what would make it fun. I'd prefer it if the board could feasibly exist in real life for the most part (though the sliding bumper-paddles would probably make that tricky on their own)

Right now it has a captured ball in the centerpiece there (looks like an eye). The idea is that you would hit both sides of the eye and that would trigger a point count down (starting at, say, a million and dropping down over 10 seconds or somesuch). When you complete a loop (the unfinished rail there) it would trigger the pupil of the eye (captured ball) to kick out and bounce around. Each bounce is adds a multiplier on whatever points are left after the countdown...

Anyway. Just curious for some outside perspective.

I'm not exactly sure I understand how that works (do you win or lose or something?) but I'd be interested in seeing some source since it appears you are working in UE4. I've aspirations in that field as well but am terrible at coding.

>> No.2773793

Works the same way as pinball - you play for points, but you have 2 gutters on either side of the board. The dark paddles on the side move like pong paddles, but bump the ball like pinball bumpers. The table raises in the middle so the ball will roll down either side.

At the moment it's completely in blueprint. It works, what I have so far, but it doesn't track score or anything. the ball bounces around and kicks off bumpers and what not though.

That hardest part is getting the paddles to kick the ball up the ramps at a decent speed, but not hard enough to make the ball fly off the board awkwardly.

Cool. I didn't know that was a thing. I was trying to keep the table size about a 16:9 ratio, but it probably should be longer. the extra space would allow the the table to have a point read-out, instead of it being a HUD on-screen...

Like the rotating face in Bride of Pinbot, a rotating playfield that changes the pinball game in real time. John Borg sort of became a designer over time as a result.

Moves like this are what give Joe Kamincow his reputation as a scoundrel. Such behavior continues today between JJP and Stern.

Anonymous leaker reveals JJP's third game:

"It's titled "Dialed In" and is a game where a cell phone located on the game calls you and the guy tells you what shots to make. A robot's arm stops a shot on the upper ramp when lit. Pat is using his 4 magnets again to throw the ball around the playfield below the cross cross ramps. Lit inserts move toward the player and you must stop them before they reach the flippers. There is another lcd display that has 2 way mirror that you have to shoot at like pin 2000. His 3rd flipper on the right middle shoots the ball up a ramp. Pat has moving target in the middle playfield blocking shots to the jets. Pat is directing this narrow game to the engineer like he did with us at WMS using someone named Wally and some Mexican as a cad drafter. I guess Jack will have to get some more investors to produce this game......as we all know of the delays from Hobbit. They are more than 4 months behind and still working with the same 2 year old white wood. Don't look for this game anytime soon.

3 new games Jack has in the lineup are Muppets, Pirates of the Caribbean, and Toy Story. He has the Disney license for them now. The Muppets is a poor choice as is only one of many Jack has made with JJP."

JJP counters by revealing Stern's next games:

"I will not make a Jimi Hendrix or another Jurassic Park or Ghost Busters or anything that has been done before. We want to do new innovative things in pinball."

ok, I knew and saw that it's huge, but it surprised me to see they used a bigger ball. The playfield looks empty, and it does seem to play very slow, going by the video. What a waste of a big table.
Thanks for the info.

Hey, this picture is from the arcade at Cedar Point. They have two of them. You can see the other one way in the background.

What are some fun youtube Pinball reviewers/collectors that have a nice voice or tell nice stories about the pinball machines they have, like where and when they saw that machine for the first time, like spida1a?

You could watch watch Bowen's tutorials and learn something instead of watching some over the top garbage youtube videos for story time.

Stole over one million US dollars from the pinball community a few months ago. Stole ideas before then. "Muh artwork" find something else to value in a machine. ZombieYeti still unpaid for MG

2 person pinball machine based off the game Joust. Don't own one personally but really cheap in pinball standards.

People have been waiting for a few years now. And it's their fault for pre-ordering sight-unseen pinball tables from a juggalo

Sounds like you just don't like the table because you hate the guy that designed it.

I think it plays great though and has some great shots and ramps with a nice theme and buildup.

Is it an unpopular opinion to say that I prefer DMDs over LCDs? By LCD I'm referring to factory-installed screens like on Jersey Jack machines.

>> No.2797609

>>2797604
I doubt it's unpopular. Major appeal of pinball machines is the physicality and art of engineering. DMDs are much more in the spirit of that

Is their an instance of an LCD used in moderation?
The screen on Wizard of Oz is just too large, busy and distracting.

Does Stern's Legends of WrestleMania count? It's got a small screen used to show WWF matches.

>> No.2798742

>>2797653
I wasn't a fan of the large screen at first but as I've been learning the game I've gotten use to it. I do like the visuals though for things like the locks and multiball and replay animations. Being able to see a lot of information at once is nice too instead of trying to grab and cycle through info.
