I know about Recca itself, it's on the 3DS eshop even, but what exactly was the "Summer Carnival '92" event? I've read that it was a tournament and that Recca was made for it, but that's about it.

Anyone got anymore info? Has anyone else played Recca? It's pretty insane.

>> No.2709350

In 1985, Hudson started an event called the Caravan, a Summer Carnival where Japanese gamers would come together and compete to get a high score in a designated game. It started with the game Star Force, then other games like the Star Soldier series. which popularized the Caravan idea that you can find in a lot of shmups.

Eventually other companies started their own Summer Carnival event. Naxat did it, and the game they used for the competition in 1992 was Recca.

I agree, it's a great game. One of the best NES games, and probably still the best console shmup I can think of.

I love RECCA, but it has forced me to realize just how bad I actually am at video games.

It's a series of pc engine games. Recca was the only exception that was developed on the NES. Btw Shinobu Yagawa of Battle Garegga and CAVE fame worked as a programmer on this game.

Is this game considered an easy or hard shmup?

You seem to get a lot of free lives. And I've noticed that the upgraded Laser weapon and Auto pods can lay waste to normal enemies pretty well.

It's weird, there's a second loop but it requires you to enter a code to access it. I'd say the "secret" loop is pretty arcade hard.

i never heard of it till the emulation fad came along cause it was some weirdo jap game that no one in the us ever played and when i first played it it blowed my testicals off with the grafix and fastness but upon playing it further it wasn't allt hat special just your typical pew pew pew blippin and bloopin aliums game lol :D

He's right, once you get past the novelty of playing a bullet hell on the NES the game is pretty run of the mill. Still a good game, though.

i prefer recca to most arcade shmups. with recca you can at least improvise. just blast normal enemies and use the shield/bomb for bosses.

but arcade bullet hell shmups require too much memorization and dedication to be good at a 15-30 minute game.

You realize this game came out in 1992 right? It's in the title. On fucking NES.

It's like saying Super Mario Bros. 1 is a run of the mill game now that there are millions of platformers out there.

>> No.2710679

Right, so almost 10 years later it had better be impressive. SNES and Genesis were already out the gate. This was a swansong for a dead console.

>> No.2710697

>>2710679

Recca is better than every SNES or Genesis shmup. In fact most 16-bit auto-scrolling shmups for home consoles really weren't that great. You had stuff like Twinkle Tale and Pocky & Rocky that was really good, but as far as auto-scrollers go games like Thunder Force 3-4 or MUSHA were the best you could find, and they weren't better than Recca.

The important part here is that Recca is an actual game with bullet hell patterns and concepts in 1992 before the idea was popularized in arcades later with games like Dodonpachi and Batsugun, before the guy who worked on Recca went to work with Raizing on Battle Garegga and Armed Police Batrider, and then with CAVE on other bullet hell games. I can't think of single bullet hell game on 16-bit consoles.

I mean look at this. Show me a game for 8-bit or 16-bit consoles that has patterns like this:

>> No.2710975

Not an auto-scroller, Thunder Force 2 was more of a multidirectional shooter like TF1 or Alien Syndrome where you can go all over the place.

It's also decidedly not as good as Thunder Force 3 or 4, so it wouldn't fit since I was naming some of the best auto-scrolling shmups on 16-bit consoles I could think of.

Batsugun came out in 93 on arcades.
Don't get me wrong, Recca is a technical feat considering the hardware it is on, though.

>> No.2711023

>>2711005

Yeah I know. Still a year later, and on hardware that made it much easier to make ridiculously fast games with a huge amount of bullets on screen.

I don't think Batsugun had much to do with popularizing the bullet hell trend anyway, but it's definitely one of the first that could actually be considered one.
